German developmental geneticist who co-authored a paper in Nature (1980), with Eric Wieschaus, entitled "Mutations Affecting Segment Number and Polarity in Drosophila," that revolutionised the field of developmental genetics. They had systematically searched for mutant genes that affect the formation of segments in the eggs of a small fruit fly to identify all of the genes of this type and understand the processes that govern development in the fruit fly embryo. They categorised the mutants as three different types of genes, which they believed controlled an increasingly complex organisation of the organism. With Edward Lewis, they shared the 1995 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for research into the mechanisms of early embryonic development. Sir James Chadwick

The History of
Toulouse Observatory in Jolimont
But it is often forgotten that this undertaking, these projects, would never have been carried out without all the personnel who, day after day, worked anonymously and often thanklessly. This is why I would like to pay a tribute to all those men and women - astronomers, technicians, calculators, assistants - who devoted their careers to astronomy in Toulouse, who spent nights in the dark and the cold taking photographic plates or measuring the moment at which stars passed the meridian, reading meteorological instruments starting at 6 o'clock in the morning, every day of the year, including Sundays and holidays, who spent their days writing numbers down in big ledgers, after checking that they were correct. The personnel often went beyond a mechanical accomplishment of the tasks that were assigned to them; they were dedicated, because they were conscious of working for Science. The undertaking is there as proof. Furthermore, this dedication is mentioned in all the annual activity reports of the Observatory. Some were rewarded, such as Dominique Saint-Blancat who received the La Caille Prize of the Academy of Science in 1924. Sometimes, it only becomes known when we read between the lines. Here is an example. I found the following sentence buried in a file at the Municipal Archives, for 1915: ``Mr. Cazabon, who has been mobilized, obtained leave which he spent at the Pic du Midi, where he put the instrument and the dome in a condition enabling them to spend several years without deteriorating."

The Imperiled Giants of the Mekong RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC - Southeast Asia's Mekong River supports a vast freshwater fishery. One of the species caught by local fishers is the Mekong giant catfish ( Pangasianodon gigas ), which according to The Guinness Book of World Records is the planet's largest freshwater fish: It can measure 3 meters long and weigh 300 kilograms. But fewer and fewer examples of this huge fish have turned up in nets recently, and last year the World Conservation Union added this catfish to its list of critically endangered species. Although the loss of this charismatic fish would be a tragedy in itself, the plight of the giant catfish also highlights the precarious position of other species inhabiting the Mekong River. In an article called The Imperiled Giants of the Mekong in the May-June American Scientist magazine, University of California at Davis biologist Zeb S. Hogan and his colleagues explain their efforts to understand the migratory behavior of these fish in hopes of improving the chances for their long-term conservation.

http://www.astro.ro/history.htm
BRIEF HISTORY On 1 April 1990, the most important centers of astronomical research (the Observatories of Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca and Timisoara) joined in one institute - the Astronomical Institute of the Romanian Academy, starting a new stage in the development of Romanian astronomy. What is it known today about the beginnings of astronomy in this geographic area? Very little, unfortunately. Anyway, there is an important evidence of the beginnings, namely the Dacian sanctuary from Sarmizegetusa, one of the most ancient vestiges of this kind in the world. Another evidence goes as far back as AD 528, when the notion of Christian era appeared for the first time in the book Liber de Paschal by Dionysius Exiguus (born at Tomis, in Dobrogea). Although astronomy is perhaps the earliest science, it got its scientific foundation only in the 16th and 17th centuries. The political and geographical conditions in this area had hindered its progress as a science and the practical astronomical needs used to be met with the assistance of foreign specialists. However, in Transylvania, whose favorable geographical position (surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains) protected it from the political struggles of this region of Europe, Bishop Ioan Vitez (1408-1462) initiated at Oradea the first astronomical observation activities in the Eastern Europe. Thus, the earliest astronomical observatory on our territory (1445-1465) was erected before that one set up by Tycho Brahe in Denmark.
