Chapter 1 DERBYSHIRE Coin 1 Location : Odin Mine, Near Castleton Coin : Hidden in the bole of an Oak tree Winner : Justin Parr - Davies Here Tallifer meets an old man, who's description matches that of Odin the Norse god, he says to him: 'Speak my name clear, Lest the candle ebbs away and leaves but darkness eternal, This place takes my earliest name, Yet today six brothers have I each a measured moment marking time, Think quickly now for time is of the essence....' This is a clue to the 7 days of the week. In the text it says that it is Wednesday, this day was named after the Norse god Odin, again confirming that the man is indeed Odin, who gives to tallifer his pet raven Munin, to aid him in his progress throughout the book. Tallifer first wakes up beneath an Oak tree and here is where the fist gold coin was hidden. OS Grid Ref Coin 2 Location : Nine Ladies Stone Circle, Stanton Moor Coin : Hidden at the base of the tree nearest to the stone Winner : Justin Parr - Davies The place Tallifer heads for on the horse 'Slepnir' is the Nine ladies stone circle. Here he meets nine sprites and a fiddler, these are based on local folklore about the stones being ladies who were turned into stone for dancing on the Sabbath. Tallifer heads off over the nearby stile and meets a stonemason chiselling on a stone. This stone can be found on the same moor by following the path that Tallifer takes. It has carved on it the letter Y and the date 1826. However it says in the text that the stonemason had made a mistake and was incorrect by 10 years, so the correct date would have been 1836, thereby giving the number as 3. It also says that Tallifer had flown over these clues at least six times on his path here, if only he had looked down he would have seen them. This refers to the river WYE (pronounced Y and it being 3 letters long ).

Garnier's " city of astronomy " Garnier made various sketches (" But it happened that if the architect was rather satisfied with them, the astronomers were not at all" ) but he finally presented a design which was unanimously adopted by the Bureau des Longitudes on December 3rd, 1879. Indeed this plan was quite original and ambitious. In fact, Garnier suggested to build a city of astronomy, including buildings to house the instruments, offices and lodgings for the astronomers.
General view of the Observatory according to Garnier's plans
The whole construction included fifteen pavilions or main buildings each at a distance fulfilling scientific requirements, and with different styles according to their functions, but giving an impression of general harmony. Once the inner road was laid out and fitted up, and the summit levelled, the first scientific buildings were built prior to the dwelling houses. The domain was enclosed by 3, 60 kilometers long wall. The construction site lasted 7 years. Bischoffsheim wanted as a director, a man able to manage the installation of his observatory and to lead it to a high level scientific establishment.

Die Stadt Bingen am Rhein und ihre Partnerstädte
Nuits-Saint-Georges (Frankreich) Nuits-Saint-Georges = herrliche burgundische Rotweine + gutes Essen + nette Menschen.

Delaunay 's work on the three-body problem on the orbit of the Moon. This work was an outstanding contribution to mathematical astronomy coming quickly after the publication of the second volume of Delaunay 's work on lunar theory which had been published in 1867. Tisserand was then appointed as an assistant-astronomer at the Paris Observatory. This was an unfortunate time at the Paris Observatory since its Director Le Verrier had become very unpopular following his drive for efficiency and attempts were being made to have him removed. In 1870 Delaunay was appointed as Director of the Paris Observatory to replace Le Verrier . Tisserand showed remarkable abilities in his work at the Observatory and it was clear that he would soon achieve an elevated position in the world of astronomy. In 1873 Tisserand was appointed director of the Toulouse Observatory to succeed Daguin, a post which he held for five years. At the Toulouse Observatory Tisserand appointed two young astronomers, Joseph Perrotin and Guillaume Bigourdan, to help him in his observational work. Neither were experienced in astronomy but Tisserand had made two good choices for he soon trained the young men to become astronomers of outstanding qualities.

The most eminent astronomer who never came to popular attention was lost in the shadow of his countryman, Pierre-Simon Laplace William I. McLaughlin Sylvia L. Miller click for full image and caption In 1968 the sociologist Robert K. Merton coined the term "Matthew Effect" to describe a phenomenon in which famous scientists acquire further recognition and support simply because they are famous. The Matthew effect is recognized as having a profound effect on the practice of science, and not all of it to the good. McLaughlin and Miller describe another phenomenon in the culture of science-called the "shadow effect"—in which the historical reputation of a scientist is obscured by that of another scientist, of greater reputation, doing closely related work. The authors zero in on the case of the 19th-century French astronomer Félix Tisserand, who has been eclipsed by his countryman, the mathematician Pierre-Simon Laplace.

JANUARY 13 - BIRTHS Sydney Brenner
(source)
Born 13 Jan 1927.
South African biologist who shared (with H. Robert Horvitz and John E. Sulston) the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for 2002 for their discoveries concerning how the genes regulate organ development and programmed cell death (apoptosis). Brenner established Caenorhabditis elegans as a model organism for the investigation of animal development including neural development. He chose this organism, a 1-mm-long soil roundworm, because of its simple structure, ease to grow in bulk populations, and finding that it is convenient for genetic analysis.
My Life in Science
, by Dr. Sydney Brenner. Ross Granville Harrison
(EB) Born 13 Jan 1870; died 30 Sep 1959.
American zoologist who developed the first successful animal-tissue cultures and pioneered organ transplantation techniques. In an early experiment, he joined parts of embryos from differently coloured frogs to observe the movement of cells during the subsequent development of the embryos produced in this way. In another experiment, he took tissue from an amphibian embryo that would have formed a left limb, inverted and transferred it to the embryo's right side, where it formed a right limb. He found a new method of studying cells, the hanging- drop culture method (1907), by which he kept fragments of living tissue alive in suitable media and watch them multiply. Using this technique, he settled a controversy about the embryonic origins of nerve fibres.
