The Shadow Effect and the Case of Felix Tisserand
The most eminent astronomer who never came to popular attention was lost in the shadow of his countryman, Pierre-Simon Laplace The essayist and poet Ralph Waldo Emerson once remarked that an institution was the "lengthened shadow of one man," and that all of history could be resolved into the biography of "a few stout and earnest persons." Historians may choose to differ with Emerson, but when a giant is institutionalized in the form of an adjective-say, Newtonian or Darwinian-there is little doubt that the great one's shadow covers a lot of historical ground. Although civilization is in debt to these individuals, we must ask whether we shine the light too brightly on just a few. Looking back on the history of science we may find that the shadows of giants have inadvertently eclipsed the reputations and contributions of lesser colleagues. Perhaps the most widely recognized eclipse is that of Alfred Russel Wallace by Charles Darwin. Of course, "Wallacian" doesn't resonate well as an adjective, so we might have been spared some verbal awkwardness in this instance. The reputation of the eminent logician Kurt Godel exerts a similar effect on the remembrance of another great logician, Alfred Tarski. And the arts have seen their fair share of the phenomenon. Mozart looms over his contemporary Salieri, as fictionalized in the hit play Amadeus. Also, a case can be made that Shakespeare dimmed the light of other Elizabethan dramatists, and indeed the bard recognized the phenomenon himself when he has Cassius say of Caesar:

TISSAPHERNESTISSOT, J. J. J. to subtle diplomacy, was beaten by Agesilaus on the Pactolus near Sardis (395); and at last the king yielded to the representations of Pharnabazus, strongly supported by the chiliarch (vizier) Tithraustes and by the queen-mother Parysatis, who hated Tissaphernes as the principal cause of the death of her favorite son Cyrus. Tithraustes was sent to execute Tissaphernes, who was lured to Colossae and slain in 395. (ED. M.) (A. A. R.) TISSOT, JAMES JOSEPH JACQUES (1836-1902), French painter, was born at Nantes on the i5th of October 1836. He studied at the cole des Beaux Arts in Paris under Ingres, Flandrin and Lamothe, and exhibited in the Salon for the first time at the age of twenty-three. In 1861 he showed "The Meeting of Faust and Marguerite, " which was purchased by the state for the Luxembourg Gallery. His first characteristic period made him a painter of the charms of women. Domaine Robert Chevillon
When it comes to Nuits Saint Georges there is one name that immediately comes to mind: Chevillon Robert Chevillon joined his father Maurice in the vineyard, which covered just 3 hectares. Still, practically the whole crop was sold off in bulk and it was not until the late-1970`s that they began bottling their own wines. Maurice retired in 1985, making way for his son Robert, whose philosophy was to allow his vines to expire naturally, therefore some reached 70 or 80 years old before finally "popping their clogs". He also eschewed modern viticultural techniques and was prudent in his use of oak, careful not to smother his fruit in wood. Now his sons Bertrand and Denis (pictured right) continue his good work, Denis tending to the vines, which now cover 13ha and his brother making the wine. I believe at one time, the word was the Denis Chevillon would make his own wines separate from Robert Chevillon and indeed, perusing my notes I find a note for a 1er Cru Les Pruliers labelled under his name (I have included it below rather than a separate page.) Their vines are almost exclusively located in Nuits Saint-Georges. At the "bottom" end are the basic Bourgogne Rouge and Nuits Saint-Georges Village, the latter which can be outstanding in quality and unbeatable value for money. The Village Cru is made from the younger vines in his
