He shared the Nobel Prize in 1969. Jan Tinbergen was born in The Hague on April 12, 1903. He was educated at the University of Leiden, where he earned a doctoral degree in physics. In 1929 he joined the staff of the Central Bureau of Statistics, the economic planning unit of the Dutch government, where he remained until 1945, except for 1936-1938, when he served as a business-cycle research expert for the League of Nations. Beginning in 1933, he accepted a position as professor of development planning at the Netherlands School of Economics, Rotterdam, an institution he served for his entire academic career. He became director of the Central Planning Bureau of the Dutch government, serving from 1945 to 1955. After that time, he became an advisor to various governments and international organizations, showing particular concern for the problems of underdeveloped countries.

Biografie Jan Tinbergen De Nederlandse econoom Jan Tinbergen werd geboren in 1903 in Den Haag. Hij was niet het enige kind uit het gezin Tinbergen met intellectuele begaafdheden: twee van zijn broers werden eveneens hoogleraar. Eén van hen, Niko, ontving zelfs de Nobelprijs voor zijn ethologische onderzoekingen. Ook Jan zou, in 1969, de Nobelprijs krijgen, samen met de Noor Ragnar Frisch, voor hun econometrisch werk, het samenspel van economie, wiskunde en statistiek. In een briefwisseling die hij met Keynes voerde, bleek dat de laatste niet veel zag in de wiskundig-statistische methode die Tinbergen gebruikte. Keynes was geneigd veel nadruk te leggen op de onzekere verwachtingen die investeerders erop na hielden. En verwachtingen laten zich nu eenmaal niet wiskundig beschrijven. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd Tinbergen de eerste directeur van het Centraal Planbureau, een functie die hij tot 1955 bekleedde. De belangrijkste problemen voor hem waren in die tijd de wederopbouw van Nederland, de inkomensverdeling en de effectiviteit van de economische politiek. Na 1955 brak een nieuwe periode voor Tinbergen aan. Hij werd hoogleraar in Rotterdam in het vak "ontwikkelingsprogrammering". De tegenstelling tussen het rijke westen en de arme derde wereld zag hij op dat moment als het belangrijkste maatschappelijke vraagstuk. Ingevolge het gedachtegoed van Tinbergen, naamgever van onze school, willen we als organisatie aandacht besteden aan internationaliseren, het eerlijk delen binnen wereld- verhoudingen en het wegvallen van grenzen. Tinbergen is tot op hoge leeftijd wetenschappelijk actief gebleven. In 1993 verrichtte hij zelf de openingshandeling van "zijn" school. Bij de opening van de nieuwbouw in 1996 was zijn kleinkind aanwezig. Jan Tinbergen stierf in 1994.

Tinbergen Institute The Tinbergen Institute (TI) is the institute of economic research of the Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam (EUR), the Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA), and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU). 'Will the 21st century be more peaceful?’ This year it is 10 years Jan Tinbergen passed away on June 9th 1994. To commemorate this, on September 22nd of this year, the Dutch-Flemish Affiliation of Economists Allied for Arms Reduction (ECAAR NL/BE), the Faculty of Economics and Econometrics of the Universiteit van Amsterdam and Stichting Oikos will organise a symposium on Tinbergen’s ideas on peace and security. The symposium is called: ‘Will the 21st century be more peaceful?’ and will be held in the aula of the Universiteit van Amsterdam. Co-financier of the symposium is Kerk en Wereld. During the morning session Prof. Dietrich Fischer, who together with Jan Tinbergen wrote the book ‘Warfare and Welfare’, will give a keynote speech. Focus is the strengthening of the United Nations. This speech is followed by a reaction by Louk de la Rive Box, chairman of the Dutch Association for UN and Maboob Murshed, first holder of the Prince Claus Chair on Development and Equity. The afternoon is divided into two parts. During the first half of the afternoon Tinbergen’s view on the future will be paramount. A column on Tinbergen’s ideas will be followed by a discussion with representatives of political youth organisations. During the second half of the afternoon the Universiteit van Amsterdam will present the Isaac Roet prize. This prize for 2004 is awarded to the best student paper on: ‘The distribution of wealth and income: a question of war and peace?’
