He shared the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1969 with Norwegian economist Ragnar Frisch. Tinbergen threw himself into econometric research and soon found himself building econometric models of the entire economy. His first attempt to build such a model, containing 24 equations to describe the Dutch economy, was not published until 1936, ten years after it was first conceived. Next was a two-volume work, Statistical Testing of Business Cycle Theories (1939), the first of which focused entirely on investment activity and the second on the macroeconomic modelling of business cycles in the USA. English economist John Maynard Keynes wrote a scathing review of the first volume in The Economic Journal , which drew a polite reply from Tinbergen complaining that Keynes had totally misunderstood his econometric methods. Even the more down-to-earth second volume was greeted with general scepticism. Model-building of this type had to wait until the 1950s before it was to become truly respectable. Tinbergen, however, was not discouraged from his aims and went on to duplicate his earlier US model for the UK economy in

    Tinbergen, Jan
    (b. April 12, 1903, The Hague, Neth.d. June 9, 1994), Dutch economist noted for his development of econometric models. He was cowinner (with Ragnar Frisch ) of the first Nobel Prize for Economics , in 1969. Tinbergen was the brother of the zoologist Nikolaas Tinbergen and was educated at the University of Leiden. From 1929 to 1945 he was a business-cycle statistician with the Dutch government's Central Bureau of Statistics and from 1945 to 1955 was director of the Central Planning Bureau. He held the post of professor of economics at The Netherlands School of Economics (now part of Erasmus University), Rotterdam, for 40 years (1933-73) and then taught for two years at the University of Leiden before his retirement in 1975. Tinbergen was an economic adviser to the League of Nations at Geneva, 1936-38, and it was there that he completed his analysis of the economic development of the United States from 1919 to 1932. This pioneering econometric study provided much of the raw material for his later development of business-cycle theory and for the application of methods of economic stabilization. Later he also constructed an econometric model of The Netherlands, which was applied to both short-term and broader political-economic planning. Among his major works are Statistical Testing of Business Cycles Econometrics Economic Policy (1956), and

Tinbergen, Jan Jan Tinbergen received his doctorate in theoretical physics at Leiden University in Holland. He is Emeritus Professor, Erasmus University, Rotterdam. He and Ragnar Frisch won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1969 for "his work in econometrics and econ omic measurement. In fact, he is among the economists who developed econometrics. He switched his interest from physics to economics partly as a reaction to the Great Depression.
His major work in econometrics was the development of multiequation models of economies and he also showed that a government with several economic targets must have at least as many policy instruments.
The following is on exerpt from , Solving the Most Urgent Problems First, in "Eminent Economists: Their Life Philosophies", in which he expresses his feelings toward economics and other sciences:
"A fascinating subject, too, is the relationship between disciplines, the comparing of different sciences. I cannot help sticking to my boyhood admiration of physics, in particular, astrophysics. I think the most imaginative contributions t o human understanding have been made by Einstein . To be faced with the fact that the velocity of light is the same when measured from a body moving toward the source of a beam of light is the same when measured from a body moving away from that source, a nd then to change the concepts of time and space accordingly so that the constancy of that velocity is the resultI cannot imagine more fundamental originality.
