Bill Thurston studied at New College, Sarasota, Florida. He received his B.S. from there in 1967 and moved to the University of California at Berkeley to undertake research under Morris Hirsch's and Stephen Smale 's supervision. He was awarded his doctorate in 1972 for a thesis entitled Foliations of 3- manifolds which are circle bundles. This work showed the existence of compact leaves in foliations of 3-dimensional manifolds. After completing his Ph.D., Thurston spent the academic year 1972-73 at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. Then, in 1973, he was appointed an assistant professor of mathematics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1974 he was appointed professor of mathematics at Princeton University. Throughout this period Thurston worked on foliations. Lawson ([5]) sums up this work:- It is evident that Thurston's contributions to the field of foliations are of considerable depth. However, what sets them apart is their marvellous originality. This is also true of his subsequent work on

Bill Thurston
I think mathematics is a vast territory. The outskirts of mathematics are the outskirts of mathematical civilization. There are certain subjects that people learn about and gather together. Then there is a sort of inevitable development in those fields. You get to the point where a certain theorem is bound to be proved, independent of any particular individual, because it is just in the path of development.

Professor William P. Thurston has contributed broadly to geometry and topology with applications to many related areas of mathematics; two of his research endeavors merit special attention. In his work on foliations , Professor Thurston settled long-standing questions on the existence of foliations of different manifolds . In his independent work on the geometry and topology of 3-manifolds he revived hyperbolic geometry as an active area of research. One of the most interesting kinds of structures on a manifold is a foliation, because it can be viewed as part of differential geometry , or pure topology, or dynamical systems . Almost every manifold which admits at least one foliation has many of them, yet not so many that foliations are easy to construct. For example, if a manifold has a smooth codimension 1 foliation, then in particular there is a tangent hyperplane field , and such a hyperplane field exists if and only if the Euler characteristic of the manifold vanishes. But most plane fields are not tangent to any foliation; they are not

Recognition and Prevention of Throwing Arm Fatigue and Arm Injury

Coach Bill Thurston Amherst College (MA)
Printer-Friendly Version Send this page to a friend The most common causes of pitching arm injuries to high school, college and professional pitchers are overload, overuse, lack of proper conditioning , and improper throwing mechanics Overload is the result of throwing too many pitches during one outing. Maximum pitch counts for various age groups, or for an individual pitcher’s normal strength and stamina, are effective in preventing overload. Overuse is the result of pitching too often and not having an adequate recovery time or a good arm maintenance program (stretching, running, strengthening, throwing) between pitching assignments. Coaches and trainers should be aware that each individual pitcher varies in arm strength, arm fatigue, arm tightness and soreness and require different recovery time needs. Make certain you provide your pitcher with a good active recovery program between pitching assignments. Proper conditioning involves the entire body; the legs and core muscles as well as the throwing arm. Coaches should supervise a proper stretching and warm-up procedure that is performed daily before throwing a ball.

    Fields Medal
    Historical Introduction
This is the original letter by Fields creating the endowment for the medals that bear his name. It is thought to have been written during the few months before his death. Notice that no mention is made about the age of the recipients (currently there is a 40 year-old limit), and that the medal should not be attached to any person, private or public, meaning that it shouldn't bear anybody's name. It is proposed to found two gold medals to be awarded at successive International Mathematical Congress for outstanding achievements in mathematics. Because of the multiplicity of the branches of mathematics and taking into account the fact that the interval between such congresses is four years it is felt that at least two medals should be available. The awards would be open to the whole world and would be made by an International Committee. The fund for the founding of the medals is constituted by balance left over after financing the Toronto congress held in 1924. This must be held in trust by the Government or by some body authorized by government to hold and invest such funds. It would seem that a dignified method for handling the matter and one which in this changing world should most nearly secure permanency would be for the Canadian Government to take over the fund and appoint as his custodian say the Prime Minister of the Dominion or the Prime Minister in association with the Minister of Finance. The medals would be struck at the Mint in Ottawa and the duty of the custodian would be simply to hand over the medals at the proper time to the accredited International Committee.

... Pitching Articles Article FREE Baseball Pitching Article Tom House, Bill Thurston, Glen Fleisig And Steven Ellis On Proper Pitching Mechanics! By Steven Ellis, In this article: Proper baseball pitching mechanics, correct pitching techniques, pitching fundamentals of the lead arm, teaching pitching mechanics to high school pitchers, pitching delivery tips for glove arm action with Tom House and Bill Thurston. Coach Ellis, I am a high school coach and I am in charge of the pitching staff. I pitched in high school and college, and I was always taught that when after throwing the ball, you 'hook', or pull back your glove hand to your body. We recently had a guy who pitched in the pro's for the Giants ( Mike LaCoss ) show up at our practice and he contradicted what I had been teaching previously. He told me that you teach to keep your glove hand forward, like you are holding it out, and not to pull your elbow back into your body. I would like your opinion on these different techniques and which one is right or better for the development of high school pitchers. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
