Welcome to Jasper County, Iowa Historical and Genealogical Data Exchange John W. Thompson Mr. Thompson was born in Collins Township, Story County, Iowa, November 25, 1866, but nearly all his life has been spent on the fine farm which he now occupies in Clear Creek Township, Jasper County, whither his parents, Samuel and Catherine H. (Deeter) Thompson, brought him when he was a child, this family being one of the earliest to settle in this Township, in 1855. Owing to the prominence of these parents here and in Marshall County, where the elder Thompson now resides, the biographer deems it best to devote some space here to them, before continuing with the immediate subject. Samuel Thompson was married in 1852 to Harriet Deeter, who died in 1853, and he was subsequently married to a sister of his first wife, Catherine H. Deeter, who was born in 1833 and whose death occurred at Rhodes, Iowa. By the first union one child, Mrs. Margaret Ellen Dodd, was born November 19, 1852, and she is residing in Jasper County. To the second union eleven children were born, named as follows:

Presented by Sylvain Cazalet HOMPSON, JOHN HENRY , M. D. of New York, was born in that city on January 2d, 1835. He is the son of William B. Thompson, also a native of New York city, and one of its oldest merchants. After receiving a sound general education, he entered upon mercantile pursuits, but these he did not find agreeable to his tastes. He chose instead the medical profession, and applied to his friend and physician, John F. Gray, M. D., as to the proper course to follow. By him he was recommended to commence attending lectures at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, of which Dr. Gray was himself a graduate. The faculty, however, refused to receive a certificate excepting from a "regular" practitioner. Then he made application and was received by the faculty of the New York Medical College, from which, after complying with the usual curriculum, he graduated with the honors on March 10th, 1863. Immediately on graduation, Dr. Thompson was appointed Prosector to the Professor of Surgery in his College, and held the position during the remainder of its existence. This gave him full opportunity for enjoying the benefits which the clinics afforded, under the supervision of the eminent Professors John M. Carnochan and B. I. Raphael.

Search for another athlete DALY, CHUCK July 20, 1933- Basketball coach. In the history of the National Basketball Association, only three coachesRed Auerbach of the dynastic Boston Celtics, Pat Riley of the fabulous Los Angeles Lakers, and Chuck Daly of the swaggering Detroit Piston "Bad Boys"have led their teams to back-to-back championships. If the Larry Bird-led Celtics provided the NBA with a chord-crunching rock-'n'-roll soundtrack in the 1980s and the gifted Lakers were its soul music, then the Bad Boy Pistonsaggressive, menacing, and physically intimidatingwere the league's rap attack. One of basketball's most respected and well-liked coaches, Chuck Daly reached the pinnacle of his profession after more than thirty years of toil, starting out as a lowly $3,600-a-year high school coach in rural Pennsylvania. "People in our business were genuinely happy for Chuck," Ron Rothstein, a former assistant of Daly's, has said. "He worked his way to the top, from high school to college to here. Nobody ever handed Chuck anything." The dapper and fashion-conscious Daly exudes what one writer has called "an easy one-of-the-boys conviviality." "It may have taken a long time," Jack McCallum wrote in Sports Illustrated (December 18, 1989), "but the coach with all those suits and all that hair has proved to be a man of style and a man of substance. And how many men like that are there?"

138. Joseph John Thomson
In 1897 the physicist Joseph john (JJ) Thomson (1856–1940) discovered the electron in a series Joseph john Thomson biography from the Nobel e-Museum.
http://www.chemheritage.org/EducationalServices/chemach/ans/jjt.html

In 1897 the physicist Joseph John (J.J.) Thomson (1856–1940) discovered the electron in a series of experiments designed to study the nature of electric discharge in a high-vacuum cathode-ray tube—an area being investigated by numerous scientists at the time. Thomson interpreted the deflection of the rays by electrically charged plates and magnets as evidence of "bodies much smaller than atoms" that he calculated as having a very large value for the charge to mass ratio. Later he estimated the value of the charge itself. In 1904 he suggested a model of the atom as a sphere of positive matter in which electrons are positioned by electrostatic forces. His efforts to estimate the number of electrons in an atom from measurements of the scattering of light, X, beta, and gamma rays initiated the research trajectory along which his student Ernest Rutherford moved. Thomson's last important experimental program focused on determining the nature of positively charged particles. Here his techniques led to the development of the mass spectroscope, an instrument perfected by his assistant, Francis Aston, for which Aston received the Nobel Prize in 1922.
