John Thompson studied at Yale University, receiving his B.A. in 1955. He went to the University of Chicago to undertake research and completed his doctorate in 1959. His doctoral thesis, entitled A Proof that a Finite Group with a Fixed-Point-Free Automorphism of Prime Order is Nilpotent was supervised by Mac Lane . In fact his doctoral thesis solved one of the conjectures of Frobenius which had remained unsolved for around 60 years. Thompson's thesis, as is clear from its title, proved Frobenius 's conjecture that a finite group with an automorphism which does not fix any group element is necessarily nilpotent. The solution of Frobenius 's conjecture was not done by simply pushing the existing techniques further than others had done; rather it was achieved by introducing many highly original ideas which were to lead to many developments in group theory. Thompson was an assistant at Harvard University in 1961-62, then, in 1962, he was appointed professor at the University of Chicago. In 1968 Thompson accepted a fellowship at University College, Cambridge in England. He was appointed

John Thompson on the Guqin Silk String Zither
silkqin
Pronounced "chin" (stringed instrument) or "goo chin" (old stringed instrument), the guqin throughout its long history has been the musical instrument most prized by China's literati. They categorized it as one of their " four arts ", collected it as an art object , praised its beautiful music , and built around it a complex ideology . No other instrument was so often depicted in paintings , or so regularly mentioned in poetry . Because of the literati's fondness for writing things down, its tablature documents the world's oldest detailed written instrumental music tradition , allowing both historically informed performance (requiring use of silk strings ) of the many early melodies , and practical exploration of the relationship between Chinese music theory and music practice. In 2001 I moved from Hong Kong, where I was Artistic Consultant for the Festival of Asian Arts , to New York. Here my focus is guqin activities, including:

May 2005 ... January 2004 counter visited times Monday, August 01, 2005 Freedom of speech at risk? This article is good in that it asks the question. My view on it is that Freedom of Speech is right when it doesn't include the freedom to tell lies about people or groups to ruin their reputation. Lies don't mean that you dislike something, or think it's crap. Lies are provable untruths, like the Koran says A, when it actually says B or just the opposite of A. peace. link comments Of note in our region: Malaysia continues to be confronted by opportunities and challenges, not the least of which are the demands posed by the steady rise of a politicised conservative Islam. And Australia is confronted with the balancing act of pursuing closer regional ties without damaging the alliance with the United States. Australia must also respond to terrorism without undermining its status as a country which prides itself in its multicultural identity and religious tolerance. A month after I bought the place, I have just spent my first weekend
at my new flat, making many items of Ikea furniture in what was
possibly the hottest weekend in ages. I even bough an electric
drill / screwdriver so I am now a proper home owner. Much nicer than my old flat, bigger, wood flooring all over the
place, lovely landscaped grounds and right on top of the river - I
spent a good time walking along the river to the local shopping centre. posted by kylet @ 10:59 PM 0 comments

Legoland
Just on our way home from Legoland with my borrowed child. Has been a lovely, hot, day.
The rides were good, the new model of Cape Canaverel was very impressively detailed - even if it was not worth waiting for the count down as all that happened was steam! I came away from the shop really wanting a Lego chess set , but instead got another new keyring (they do not last - arms and legs fall off) and some magnets. I wish I lived closer so I could justify the annual pass, but then also I do not have the loan child available on demand either.
