There is concern that the prevailing political attitude is one of support for only a narrow core of "basics" with little or no regard for the preservation of a balanced, well rounded curriculum. I know all fine arts are important to each of you and that you value the arts in our schools. Here is an opportunity for each of us as individual citizens to support a cause that the Texas Coalition for Quality Arts Education, and others place at the top if their priority lists. 49. Real Chicago: Chicago-Sun Times Photo Essay
In that first edition, thomason and Times editor Richard J. Finnegan wrote that Former SunTimes photographers bob Kotalik, Jack Lenahan, Gene Pesek,
http://www.suntimes.com/photos/galleries/realchicago/intro/
THE SETTING BY RICHARD CAHAN
Sun-Times photographers hit the street in 1956: Louis Giampa (from left) Larry Nocerino, Bill Pauer, Bob Kotalik, Carmen Reporto, Howard Lyon, Ralph Walters, Bill Sturm, Bill Knefel, Dave Mann and Joe Kordick.
It took about four seconds to take all of the images in this book. But it took dozens of people working seven days a week for more than 60 years to make them. They are precious. They look anything but precious. They look tough and gritty and real. The photographers who took these images were able to do more than simply record what was happening in front of their cameras. They recorded truths-about human life and about the place and times in which these pictures were taken. This collection encompasses pictures from the Chicago Times, the Chicago Sun, the Chicago Sun-Times and the Times' sister paper, the Chicago Daily News. The Sun-Times and Daily News photo staffs were competitors, but the papers shared the same darkroom and filed photos in the same photo library for almost two decades. The Daily News closed in 1978, but most of its photographs remain in the Sun-Times files. This book is about modern Chicago, glimpses of the city since the early 1940s when the Sun and the Times were going head-to-head. Based on the photo archive of the Chicago Sun-Times, the book offers a look at Chicago as it battered its way through World War II, endured population booms and busts and transformed itself into the city by the lake we know today. It is based on a collection of prints, negatives and digital files. Some of these photos were easily accessible-filed in alphabetical order by subject or by name in the Sun-Times library. Many had long been forgotten-moved out of the way to an attic in the paper's office headquarters at 401 N. Wabash Avenue. All were recently moved six blocks west to the Sun-Times' new office at 350 N. Orleans Street.

Meet the Team!
DRIVER: Robert Donovan CREW CHIEF: David Thomason CREW MEMBER: Steve Bagwell Steve came to the team in 2002. He has proved to be a valuable member of the team diving in, wiping the tires down like a pro. Steve has not missed race since coming on board and it would be hard to replace him. (Especially when he figures out there aren't nin cylinders on a V-8 Chevy.) CREW MEMBER and SPONSOR REP.: David Wells David Wells joined the team when his company Red Rock Distributing David can turn the wrenches with the best of them but is also the official cook of the team. David routinely provides the crew and much of the pit area with great food hot off the grill. David is currently building his own FED and hopes to join the Jr Fuel ranks as a driver soon. Crew Menmber: Les Milner Although Les Milner lives in Illinois, he manages to make most of the races. Les has been on the crew since the first year the team began racing in Jr Fuel. With an Engineering background Les is a very helpful part of the team. He handles most of the technical aspects of the team such as driving the tow truck, checking tire pressures, and running the video camera.

A Spectacular Boulder Field Near the Head of Texas Creek Drainage
Wayne I. Anderson Yielding to gravity, slabs of bedrock slid and tumbled. Down the slopes, giant rocks crashed and rumbled. The boulders above Texas Creek now seem out of place, detached from their home high on the mountain face. O'Hanlon (1999) describes the Texas Creek Boulder Field as one of the most interesting boulder fields in the Sangre de Cristo Range and indicates that overall the feature gives the impression of moonscape. His excellent trail guide provides information on how to reach the site. Thomason and Porter (1997) illustrate a portion of the impressive boulder field at 11,500 feet, high in the Texas Creek drainage. Intrigued by these accounts, Jan and I hiked up to the boulder field in September of 2001 to take a look. The Texas Creek Boulder Field is a fine example of landslide topography. In geologic usage, landslide refers to a moderately rapid to rapid movement of earth material such as downward sliding or falling of a mass of rock, weathered material, or a mixture of the two. Five types of landslides are commonly recognized: slumps, debris slides, debris falls, rock slides, and rock falls. Cabin-size boulders are common in the spectacular Texas Creek Boulder Field on the east flank of the Sangre de Cristo Range, northwest of Westcliffe, Colorado. Composed of sandstone and conglomerate, the huge boulders represent rock falls and rock slide events, during the last 50,000 years of earth history. Geologist on sandstone boulder provides scale; photo taken looking eastward toward the Wet Mountains, September of 2001.
