A QUICK LOOK AT RENE THOM THROUGH MY EYES AS INFLUENCED BY ROSEN AND OTHERS Don Mikulecky In “Essays on Life Itself” Robert Rosen devotes an entire chapter to Thom’s work. The subheadings in that chapter span the contributions of Thom which Rosen sees as going beyond the classification theorem which stands on its own. On Theory In Biology This is a snapshot of the history of the rift between empiricists and theoreticians and the idea that only through experiment can one learn. M The conclusion of this section says “on the other hand, there is only one reason to do either science or mathematics, and that is to understand what is going on.” It seems then that we might best ask what Thom did to increase our understanding. On Information. Here he explains that he uses information in a semantic sense, not the sense that Shannon did which was purely syntactic. Thus, here information is found in answers to “why?”. That of course Rosen answers with Aristotelian causes. He then identifies Thom’s contribution of the notion of genericity with the notion of surrogacy which is how he deals with the artificial lifers and intelligencers. The bottom line is the recognition of a necessary semantic component to objectivity.

Rene Thom and Dali
It's been many days since I posted anything of consequence, and I am still trying to prove that /time spent blogging/ + /time spent on research/ is not a constant. Oh well...
I finally got done with a slew of deadlines, and took a trip over to the Philadelphia Museum of Art to see the ongoing Dali exhibit . I'll leave an art critique to the experts; it was refreshing and rather bizarre, all in the same breath. Dali had this knack of absorbing the prevailing trends of the time and then expressing them in his work in a vivid way. He did this with Freudian theory, and with quantum theory (or more precisely with the idea that matter is indivisible).
His last painting was called ' Swallow's Tail ', and is yet another example of his ability to transform ideas into art. In this case, the ideas came from topology, and specifically from

is known for his development of catastrophe theory, a mathematical treatment of continuous action producing a discontinuous result. The surprising warmth with which we were welcomed there, all those people offering food and drink at the roadside, still fills me with emotion. ... successful but not brilliantly so Henri Cartan ... the last year, after the 'victory', was a year of opening, bringing with it the impression of once more living life to the full. Of this rebirth I can recall a sensation of freedom that I found hard to control. Henri Cartan . There he was influenced by others including Ehresmann and Koszul. His doctorate, supervised by Henri Cartan , was awarded in 1951 for a thesis entitled Fibre spaces in spheres and Steenrod squares. The work of the thesis was carried out in Strasbourg but Thom presented it to Paris. The foundations of the theory of cobordism, for which Thom later received a Fields Medal , already appear in his doctoral thesis.

Bures-sure-Yvette, France, October 25, 2002] Thom won the Fields Medal, mathematics' equivalent to the Nobel Prize, in 1958 for advances in geometry, but his true career was just beginning. After defining mathematically for the first time what it means for a statement to be true in general (not necessarily proved to be always true, however), he and his followers analyzed the ways that a general truth could fail, which came to be called catastrophe theory. The study of such failures, called catastrophes or singularities, has become an essential part of modern mathematics, physics, and mathematical biology, and is one of the elements of the better-known chaos theory. 40. Thom, René
thom, René (1923) thom was born in Montbéliard in the Vosges and studied in Paris at the Ecole Normale Supérieure. He was professor at Strasbourg
http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/T/Thom/1.html
French mathematician who developed catastrophe theory in 1966. He is a specialist in the fields of differentiable manifolds and topology.
Thom formulated a precise series associated with 'space spherical bundles' and demonstrated that the fundamental class of open spherical bundles showed topological invariance and formed a differential geometry. In his work on the theory of forms Thom showed that there are complete homological classes that cannot be the representation of any differential form, and formulated auxiliary spaces, now known as Thom spaces.
In 1956, Thom developed the theory of transversality, and contributed to the examination of singularities of smooth maps. This work laid the ground for his statement of the catastrophe theory, which is, in fact, a model, not yet an explanation. He proposed seven 'elementary catastrophes', which he hoped would be sufficient to describe processes within human experience of space-time dimensions. The seven elementary catastrophes are the fold, cusp, swallow-tail, butterfly, hyperbolic, elliptic, and parabolic. Of these, the cusp is both the simplest and the most useful.
