Convention Agenda Idaho-Oregon Buddhist Temple 286 SE Fourth Street Ontario, Oregon 97914 Directions February 2005 Bulletin Buddha is Here Now by Rev. Jundo Gregory Gibbs Dr. Al Bloom gave me a cartoon hhe had cut out of the newspaper about 20 years ago. The cartoon shows a dour fellow walking along with a placard reading "Jesus is Coming". Walking twenty feet behind him was a cheerful looking fellow with a sign that reads, "Buddha is Here Now!" This may be unfair to Christians, but it does make a valid point. The truth we revere is here now. We look forward to all our dreams coming true in the next life. Even so, the source of goodness which will transform us into Buddhas is here now. The healing sound of the Nembutsu can ring in the back of your mind right now, "Namu Amida Butsu". The source of comfort and hope we need can be heard now vibrating in the depths of our hears, "Namanda". We may have to wait a bit to be perfect exemplars of wisdom and compassion. We don't have to wait to be composed and hopeful. The resource for confidence in our lives and trust for the future calls to us here and now, "Namu Amida Butsu". I have been blessed to encounter this teaching (I know we don't always use such as a term as "blessed"), I have been fortunate to be ordained in the Jodo Shinshu tradition and to have studied at IBS and at Chuo Bukkyo Gakuin, where I met my wife. I have been very fortunate to be placed at the Oregon Buddhist Temle in Portland. I have been honored to be the Supervising Minister for the Idaho-Oregon Buddhist Temple this past year and a half. If there is one message I would like to leave you with it is this, don't wait! Shinjin happens. The source of all of our dreams coming true is calling in the depths of our hearts, "Namu Amida Butsu".

Warnock CHAPTER 5 - THE TEMPLE OF ZERUBBABEL W e are not going to deal with the Temple of Zerubbabel at length because we dealt with it in a previous writing ( The Feast of Tabernacles ). But we will comment upon it briefly so as to keep the continuity of the seven temples, showing how in God's plan and purpose He would continue to move from Tent to Tent, until He finds for Himself a true habitation in the Spirit. "Give ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak; And hear, O earth, the words of my mouth" (Deut. 32:1). Moses would declare unto the heavens a word that would reveal the wisdom of God. David cried unto God, and as we have observed, the very heavens mobilized their forces for battle. Joshua commanded the sun and the moon to stand still. Ezekiel prophesied unto "the wind" over the dry bones, "Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain that they may live," and the dead bones began to arise and stand in battle array. Paul was known in heavenly places. Because of his life and his identification with the Cross, he penetrated the world of darkness, and even spirits cried out: "Jesus I know, and Paul I know..." For when Paul spoke the heavens heard what he said, and when he walked in obedience to the Lord and in the sufferings of the Cross, the world of darkness became aware of it, bringing great fear upon them.

In 1847, Brigham Young and the first party of Mormon emigrants reached the Salt Lake Valley. The story of the Mormon exodus from the mid-west to Salt Lake has become well-known, but most tourists are still curious about Mormon culture and about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (or LDS Church), as the Christian religion is officially known. Some visitors want to know about the earliest Mormons who practiced polygamy, minted their own money, and made their own laws - all of which are forbidden by the LDS church today. Others take note of the lasting impression made by the "second wave" of Mormons; hundreds of Europeans who converted to Mormonism in the mid-1800's, and left their home countries to travel to Utah. Following the routes of earlier explorers, Mormon pioneers formed the settlement and transportation patterns of the state. Differences in ancestry and economic status marked the architectural and agricultural styles in various areas. For all Utahns, members of the LDS church or not, Mormonism is a unique heritage which has shaped the past, and continues to impact the state's future. Today, approximately 70% of Utah's residents are members of the LDS church. Mormonism today is a part of everyday life throughout the world, but because of the concentration of LDS church members in Utah, Mormon culture distinguishes the area. Many Utahns help shape public issues in accordance with standards and ideals of their spiritual beliefs. The result is a modern, forward-thinking state, known for citizens who believe in community and family values, volunteerism, and civic pride.

A physician and member of the American Philosophical Society, Fox also took possession of the remainder of Benjamin Franklin's papers, which eventually passed through his son, Charles Pemberton Fox, to the APS. The Franklin-Fox Collection contains 98 items, consisting mostly of letters from William Temple Franklin to George Fox regarding land holdings and finances, and retained copies of Fox's letters to Franklin. The correspondence is fairly relentlessly focused on business matters and rarely contains personal comments, however there are occasional requests for books and two reference to the yellow fever epidemic of 1798 and the death of Benjamin Franklin Bache.

The St. George Utah Temple The St. George Temple, located in Utah's Dixie, was dedicated in 1877, the first of the Utah temples. Even today it is an impressive building; imagine the awe with which it must have been greeted when new. The first of the Utah temples. Some Latter-day Saints believe that Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem, built in about 1000 BC, was the first temple of their religion (apparently this is not official LDS doctrine). Non-Mormons think this is a bit of a stretch, but so be it. The next temple was built in Kirtland, Ohio, in 1836; it still stands, under the ownership of the Community of Christ (formerly the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints), and is not used for the ceremonies the other temples are. The third temple (second in "this dispensation") was built in Nauvoo , Illinois, in 1846. Soon after its completion, an arsonist destroyed the interior of the temple. In May 1850, a tornado knocked down one wall of the gutted structure and weakened the other walls, which were eventually taken down. It has now (2002) been rebuilt. St. George was the next, dedicated in 1877. Logan, Manti, and Salt Lake were constructed more or less simultaneously, and were dedicated in that order.

'Even a blind man knows when the sun is shining'
By T.C. Mazar Published: Tuesday, January 25, 2005 You might agree that George Miller a 42 year-old part-time student at Temple, leads the average hectic college life. George darts between classes and stresses over mid-terms, all while trying to squeeze in lunch. The only difference is when George is on campus and he needs a guiding shoulder if he's not familiar the rugged Temple terrain. On our way to the Draught Horse for lunch, he grabbed onto my shoulder, and I had the privilege of being his eyes for a bit.
"Because I'm blind, I have a responsibility, just like my professors do, to work around it," George said. "I'm here because I'm serious about my education."
Media Credit: Krystle Marcellus George's trust was evident as we walked along Broad Street discussing different classes and subject matter. As the street lights changed, I let George know, and we would continue on our way. Our stomachs growled in a frenzied hunger as we made our way to lunch.

After the martyrdom of Joseph Smith, the Saints were led from Nauvoo to the site of modern day Salt Lake City. It was not too long afterwards that Brigham Young directed the Saints to expand their growth into other areas. One of those areas was modern day, St. George, Utah. The Saints were then directed to build a temple in St. George Utah. The Temple at St. George is the first temple constructed in Utah. It was dedicated on April 6, 1877. This page contains a sample of the best digital photos and pictures that we have taken of the St. George, Utah, Temple.
