W elcome to the George Washington Masonic Memorial. Come along with us for a virtual tour of the memorial. Learn the history of the building and see the collections . Just a mile from the Potomac River, in Alexandria, Virginia and overlooking the nation's capitol, stands the 333 ft. George Washington Masonic National Memorial on historic Shooters Hill. Dedicated to the memory of George Washington-Patriot, President, Mason - the Memorial was dedicated on May 12, l932, as an expression of the Masonic fraternity's faith in the principles of civil and religious liberty and orderly government. George Washington’s Masonic Life A Chronology The George Washington Masonic National Memorial was constructed entirely with voluntary contributions from members of the Masonic Fraternity. The Memorial Association is the only unified effort of all of the Grand Lodges in the United States. The construction of this beautiful, awe-inspiring Memorial was the single most important 20th century successful endeavor by the entire Masonic fraternity. Each Grand Lodge is a sovereign body in its own territorial jurisdiction but the love and reverence for George Washington by the Masons in this country is amply demonstrated by the collective effort of all of the jurisdictions to keep this Memorial to Washington, the Mason, a living reality.

George Temple was educated in London. In 1918 he entered Birkbeck College as an evening student (the College had previously been known as London Mechanic's Institution and in 1920 was recognised as a school of the University of London for evening and part-time students). George became a part-time research assistant in physics there the following year. He received his B.Sc. in 1922, then two years later he was appointed Demonstrator in Mathematics at Imperial College, London. Whitehead had been the main reason for Temple's move to Imperial as he had been interested in papers in relativity which Temple had published. However Whitehead left the chair at Imperial as Temple arrived and Chapman was appointed to fill the chair. Chapman obtained a scholarship for Temple to undertake further research and he spent a year at Imperial working on quantum theory before going to Cambridge where he worked with Eddington Temple returned to Imperial as a Reader in 1930, then two years later was appointed to the chair of mathematics at King's College London. During World War II he worked at RAF Farnborough where his work earned him a CBE. During his time in Farnborough he worked on aerodynamics and supersonic fluid flow.

He had several engagements with D'Oyly Carte companies in London and on tour between 1878 and 1896. In October 1878 he filled in briefly for Rutland Barrington as Captain Corcoran in H.M.S. George Herbert, The Temple Genre: sacred lyric collection imitating the architectural structure of a church while tracing the story of the persona's struggle with faith. Form: extraordinary metrical experiments, including "shaped poems," the most famous of which are "The Altar" and "Easter Wings." The book as a whole also has the form of a spiritual autobiography in lyrics, sacralizing the sonnet cycle's obsessive narration of the Lover-Beloved relationship and redirecting its interest in philosophy to the limitations of will-directed reason and the power of faith to command the believer. Characters: Herbert's persona is almost indistinguishable from his historical one, except that some of these poetic situations clearly are fanciful, and the personae of "Love," "God," "heart," arise from the medieval allegorical tradition but transcend it by means of Herbert's dexterous and surprising ability to make them psychological forces as well as metaphysical phenomena. Summary: Herbert's struggle tends to reflect his personal ambitions for a worldly life which were set against the demands of his rural parsonage at Bemerton. His ambition raised him from the fifth son of a dead Welch father to a member of Parliament and of the faculty of Cambridge. But the death of patrons led him to reconsider his objectives, and his last 3 years he lived as a poor country parson and wrote all the poems in

George Herbert was born in Montgomery, Wales , on April 3, 1593, the fifth son of Richard and Magdalen Newport Herbert. After his father's death in 1596, he and his six brothers and three sisters were raised by their mother, patron to John Donne who dedicated his Holy Sonnets to her. Herbert was educated at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge . His first two sonnets, sent to his mother in 1610, maintained that the love of God is a worthier subject for verse than the love of woman. His first verses to be published, in 1612, were two memorial poems in Latin on the death of Prince Henry , the heir apparent.
After taking his degrees with distinction (B.A. in 1613 and M.A. in 1616), Herbert was elected a major fellow of Trinity, in 1618 he was appointed Reader in Rhetoric at Cambridge , and in 1620 he was elected public orator (to 1628). It was a post carrying dignity and even some authority: its incumbent was called on to express, in the florid Latin of the day, the sentiments of the university on public occasions. In 1624 and 1625 Herbert was elected to represent Montgomery in Parliament. In 1626, at the death of

Immediately that Walford Davies had told the Benchers of his departure to Wales, consideration was given to the appointment of his successor, and in due course Mr George T. Ball, a brilliant young organist at the Royal College, was offered the post as Acting Organist under Walford Davies. It was 6th March 1919 and, at the age of twenty-three, the beloved 'Doctor', as he later also became known, was secured for the Temple where he was to serve for sixty-two distinguished years. George Thomas Thalben-Ball was born on 18th June 1896 in Sydney, Australia, but his parents returned to England when George was four years old. It was here in London that he later joined the choir of G.D. Cunningham in Muswell Hill, where he became head boy. He was a pupil of Cunningham for piano, and he soon showed musical ability of such great promise that he gained an exhibition, as a first study pianist, to the Royal College of Music at the age of fourteen. There he won the Clarke Scholarship and was soloist in the first performance in England of Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto in D minor. He studied the organ with Sir Walter Parratt and at the age of sixteen became a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists. In 1916 he was appointed as organist of Paddington Parish Church.
