WHAT IS COUNSELLING AND HOW CAN IT HELP?

Counselling provides a confidential, non-judgemental and caring place to explore your anxieties and problems, in a way that may not be possible with a friend or relative.
It can be a means of helping you to face up to some painful aspects of your life. In the process, it often brings change and discovery of some previously hidden truth about yourself. With this comes freedom to live more fully and with greater awareness and understanding.
It offers a therapeutic relationship which will support you in your decision making and in drawing upon your own inner resources.
COUNSELLING MAY HELP YOU THROUGH A CURRENT CRISIS OR WITH ONGOING PROBLEMS,
FOR EXAMPLE:

* Stress and anxiety
* Relationship difficulties
* Bereavement and loss * Depression * Low self-esteem * Life changes or finding a new direction * Disability, illness or accident

Brook Taylor
Born: 18 Aug 1685 in Edmonton, Middlesex, England
Died: 29 Dec 1731 in London, England
Brook Taylor added to mathematics a new branch now called the 'calculus of finite differences', invented integration by parts, and discovered the celebrated formula known as Taylor's expansion. In 1708 Taylor produced a solution to the problem of the centre of oscillation which, since it went unpublished until 1714, resulted in a priority dispute with Johann Bernoulli. Taylor's Methodus incrementorum directa et inversa (1715) added to mathematics a new branch now called the 'calculus of finite differences' and he invented integration by parts. It also contained the celebrated formula known as Taylor's expansion, the importance of which remained unrecognised until 1772 when Lagrange proclaimed it the basic principle of the differential calculus. Taylor also devised the basic principles of perspective in Linear Perspective (1715). Together with New principles of linear perspective the first general treatment of the vanishing points are given. Taylor gives an account of an experiment to discover the law of magnetic attraction (1715) and an improved method for approximating the roots of an equation by giving a new method for computing logarithms (1717).

A. Brook Taylor (American Fishing Trawler, 1913)
A. Brook Taylor , a 295 gross ton wooden steam trawler, was built in 1913. During the early months of U.S. participation in the First World War she was inspected for possible U.S. Navy service. Though found suitable for minesweeping duties and assigned the registry number SP-326, she was not taken over and remained in commerical operation. (Trawler: t. 295; l. 150'0"; b. 24'0"; dr. 13'6" (aft); s. 11 k.) In June 1917, shortly after the United States entered World War I, the Navy inspected A. Brook Taylor —a wooden-hulled trawler built in 1913 and owned in 1917 by the Virginia Fishing Co., of Ditchly, Va. She was found to be suitable for service as a minesweeper and—according to a Navy Department letter dated 16 November 1917—was to be fitted out as such "preparatory to . . . [being called] into service in case of emergency." The anticipated "emergency" undoubtedly referred to extensive mining of American waters. However, even though German submarines did lay some mines off the east coast of the United States, A. Brook Taylor was never taken over by the Navy.

One of the leading English mathematicians of his age, Brook Taylor was on the panel that adjudicated between Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz as to who had invented infinitessimal calculus (1712). He got his doctorate the year before he published this work. In it he established the branch of mathematics now known as the calculus of finite differences, and first published his famous theorem, although the full importance of the latter was not grasped until over fifty years later by Lagrange who proclaimed it the principal foundation of differential calculus. The copy held in St John's was the gift of another prominent Johnian mathematician, Sir Joseph Larmor. Books by Brook Taylor in St John's Library. St John's Library Home Page Special Collections ... 50 Hikes in the Maine Mountains

by Cloe Chunn
Katahdin is Maine's most famous hike, its most challenging (tied with Bigelow, from my point of view), and one of its most beautiful. Its name means"Sacred Mountain," as indeed it is to the Native American people. The supreme effort required by this climb is well worth the experience. This is a hike that should be attempted only in good weather. Even then, the climber should be completely prepared for emergencies, both of weather and physical limits. Plenty of food, water, extra-warm clothing, and foul-weather gear should be carried. The Helon Taylor Trail, named after H.N. Taylor, who was for many years Baxter Park's superintendent, provides a 3400-foot ascent up Keep Ridge to Pamola, the Knife Edge, and the rest of Katahdin's highest peaks. There are outstanding views along the route's entire length, and the hiker has opportunities to experience stretches of mountain terrain (on the Knife Edge) found nowhere else in the East. This hike, as could be expected on an ascent of Maine's highest mountain, will test your endurance a little. The trail demands steady work on the ascent and will test your brakes on the way down. Register with the ranger at the Roaring Brook Campground, where the hike begins, before starting out on the trail and again on your return. This hikers' log helps keep tabs on foot traffic on the great expanse of Katahdin in case rescue is needed.
