Ten Lessons I Wish I Had Been Taught
Gian-Carlo Rota [note]
Indiscrete Thoughts by Gian-Carlo Rota, edited by Fabrizio Palombi . Allow me to begin by allaying one of your worries. I will not spend the next half hour thanking you for participating in this conference or for your taking time away from work to travel to Cambridge. And to allay another of your probable worries, let me add that you are not about to be subjected to a recollection of past events similar to the ones I've been publishing for some years with a straight face and an occasional embellishment of reality. Dirk Struik was right: a speaker should try to give his audience something they can take home. But what? I have been collecting some random bits of advice that I keep repeating to myself, do's and don'ts of which I have been and will always be guilty. Some of you have been exposed to one or more of these tidbits. Collecting these items and presenting them in one speech may be one of the less obnoxious among options of equal presumptuousness. The advice we give others is the advice that we ourselves need. Since it is too late for me to learn these lessons, I will discharge my unfulfilled duty by dishing them out to you. They will be stated in order of increasing controversiality.
Lecturing
The following four requirements of a good lecture do not seem to be altogether obvious, judging from the mathematics lectures I have been listening to for the past forty-six years.

Kurt Gödel
Born: 28 April 1906 in Brünn, Austria-Hungary (now Brno, Czech Republic) Died: 14 Jan 1978 in Princeton, New Jersey, USA Kurt Gödel attended school in Brünn, completing his school studies in 1923. His brother Rudolf Gödel said:- Even in High School my brother was somewhat more one-sided than me and to the astonishment of his teachers and fellow pupils had mastered university mathematics by his final Gymnasium years. ... Mathematics and languages ranked well above literature and history. At the time it was rumoured that in the whole of his time at High School not only was his work in Latin always given the top marks but that he had made not a single grammatical error. Kurt entered the University of Vienna in 1923. He was taught by Furtwängler, Hahn, Wirtinger, Menger, Helly and others. As an undergraduate he took part in a seminar run by Schlick which studied Russell's book Introduction to mathematical philosophy. Olga Tausky-Todd, a fellow student of Gödel's, wrote:-

3. Address 1. The Vienna Circle The Vienna Circle, a group of about three dozen scientists in Vienna who worked in the areas of philosophy, logic, mathematics, the natural and social sciences, pioneered in the development of analytic (linguistic) philosophy and philosophy of science and may be counted among the most important and most influential trends of thought in the twentieth century. This modernistic movement first became known to the public in 1929 with the publication of a manifesto entitled 'The Scientific World View. The Vienna Circle'. Its core was the so-called 'Schlick Circle' centered around Moritz Schlick, a professor of philosophy at the University of Vienna, who was murdered there in 1936 by a student. This core contained in particular Friedrich Waismann, Herbert Feigl, Rudolf Carnap, Hans Hahn, Philipp Frank, Otto Neurath, Viktor Kraft, Karl Menger, Kurt Goedel and Edgar Zilsel. At the meetings in Boltzmanngasse, Olga Taussky-Todd, Olga Hahn-Neurath, Felix Kaufmann, Rose Rand, Gustav Bergmann amd Richard von Mises took part, and in addition, foreign guests, some of them well-known today, such as Hans Reichenbach, Carl G. Hempel, Alfred Jules Ayer, Ernest Nagel, John von Neumann, Willard Van Orman Quine and Alfred Tarski attended now and then. At the periphery of the Vienna Circle flourished contacts with Ludwig Wittgenstein, Karl R. Popper and Heinrich Gomperz. A central goal of this discussion group was to advance the principles of the Enlightenment and of pluralism by discussion philosophical issues in a scientific way with the help of modern logic on the basis of common-sense knowledge and the empirical sciences. The manifold movement of logical empiricism is mirrored in the publications it produced, particularly 'Erkenntnis' (after 1937 published in Holland under the title 'Journal of Unified Science') and two series: 'Schriften zur Wissenschaftlichen Weltauffassung', and 'Einheitswissenschaft', and the 'International Encyclopedia of Unified Science', edited by Otto Neurath, Rudolf Carnap (both already in exile) and Charles Morris. Compared to the picture of its intellectual successes, the actual human fate of the Vienna Circle is all the more tragic and regrettable. Motivated by racism and politics, and lastly also by obscurantist theories, the forcible dissolution and expulsion of the Vienna Circle began already in the early thirties - simultaneous to its internationalization -, in particular after the disbanding of democratic institutions after 1933 and 1934, and then with real vengeance after the 'Anschluss' of March 1938. Whereas logical empiricism received a warm welcome in the English-speaking world and in Scandinavia, leading to the widespread development of modern philosophy of science and in the direction of semiotics, the philosophical and mathematical landscape in Austria long into the period after 1945 was characterized by a kind of restauration, rather than by any sort of re-immigration. 2. The Institute Vienna Circle The international 'Institute Vienna Circle', a nonprofit society founded in Vienna in October 1991, sets as its goals, firstly, the documentation and furtherance of the contributions and development of the 'Vienna Circle' in the areas of science and adult education; and secondly the cultivation and application of logical empiricism, critical rationalism and linguistic analysis in the sense of a scientific philosophy and coordinated with general socio-cultural developments. An essential goal of this effort is the democratization of knowledge and of science understood as a process of enlightment in contrast to irrationalism, dogmatism and fundamentalism in any social setting, but in cooperation with developments of research. 3. Goals and Aims * The initiation and organization or holding of various activities at universities (holding courses, inviting guest professors, presenting lecture series), in the area of adult education (continuing education of co-workers, development of study material), and in school education (continuing education of teachers, preparation of course material). * The organization and holding of correlated public research discussions, conferences, symposia, exhibitions as well as film, radio and TV productions. * The establishment of a publicly accessible service and research facility for foreign and domestic interested parties. * Catalogization and documentation of the literary estates of members of the Vienna Circle, its predecessors and periphery in the form of photocopies, microfilms and catalogs of papers. * Documentation of audiovisual material, mediatheque (including material for film, video, radio and photography). * The preparation and editing of publications (original research, reprints, translations), e.g. biographical works and monographs on the Vienna Circle and its influence, including even complete editions of members of the Vienna Circle. Included here are the publication of regular newsletters, an international Yearbook and a book series of the 'Institute Vienna Circle'. * The establishment of a research library on the Vienna Circle. 4. Olga Taussky-Todd was a distinguished and prolific mathematician who wrote about 300 papers. Throughout her life she received many honors and distinctions, most notably the Cross of Honor, the highest recognition of contributions given by her native Austria . Olga's best-known and most influential work was in the field of matrix theory, though she also made important contributions to number theory.

Furtwängler ’s Advisor: C. Felix (Christian) Klein Ph.D. Universität Bonn
Felix Klein is best known for his work in non- euclidean geometry, for his work on the connections between geometry and group theory, and for results in function theory. However Klein considered his work in function theory to be the summit of his work in mathematics. He owed some of his greatest successes to his development of Riemann's ideas and to the intimate alliance he forged between the later and the conception of invariant theory, of number theory and algebra, of group theory, and of multidimensional geometry and the theory of differential equations, especially in his own fields, elliptic modular functions and automorphic functions. Klein’s Advisor 1: Julius Plücker Ph.D.

Special Summer/Fall 1998 (1) Coordinating special section activities related to women in mathematics for the INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF MATHEMATICIANS, Berlin, Germany, August 18 - 27, 1998. (See Circular Letter #24 All who are interested in the participation of women in the study of mathematics and in the community of mathematicians are invited to the following activities: FRIDAY, August 21 - at 19:30: PANEL DISCUSSION: After recognition of the involvement of women from many countries as ICM participants, women speakers from several countries will discuss "Events and policies: Effects on women in mathematics". The panel is being organized by women from the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM), the European Women in Mathematics (EWM) and the Committee on Women and Mathematics of the European Mathematical Society, represented by a committee consisting of Bhama Srinivasan (chair; Chicago, USA), Bettye Anne Case (Tallahassee, USA), and Christine Bessenrodt (Magdeburg, Germany). The organizers have received planning advice from women in several additional countries. They envision that each speaker will talk about how certain events or policies in her country have affected women in mathematics. at 21:15: A film entitled "Women and mathematics across cultures" will be shown which briefly introduces EWM, shows some statistics, and allows four woman mathematicians to share their personal experiences about the impact of cultural differences on the status of women in the profession. The film was directed by Marjatta Naatanen (Helsinki, Finland).

Professor Bernhard Neumann, one of Australia's most distinguished mathematicians, was interviewed for the Australian Academy of Science's Interviews with Australian scientists programin February 1998. The interview was conducted by Professor Bob Crompton. Here is an edited transcript. You can order the videotape from us for $65.50 (including GST). List of edited transcripts Introduction Professor Bernhard Neumann has played a dominant role in mathematics in Australia since his arrival in this country in 1962. He came to Australia to take up an appointment as the Foundation Chair of the Department of Mathematics within the Institute of Advanced Studies of the Australian National University. He and his late wife Hanna, also a Fellow of this Academy, who was Professor and Head of the Department of Mathematics in the then School of General Studies, now the Faculties, taught and influenced many young people with mathematical talent, at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, and their influence spread downwards into the schools. Bernhard Neumann's distinguished contributions to mathematics are many and varied, mostly on the theory of groups. His original work is to be found in over 100 papers, but in addition he is the author of two books and numerous reviews, and he has written essays about a number of famous mathematicians. In his six-volume series

Ten Lessons I wish I had been Taught
Gian-Carlo Rota MIT, April 20 , 1996 on the occasion of the Rotafest Allow me to begin by allaying one of your worries. I will not spend the next half hour thanking you for participating in this conference, or for your taking time away from work to travel to Cambridge. And to allay another of your probable worries, let me add that you are not about to be subjected to a recollection of past events similar to the ones I've been publishing for some years, with a straight face and an occasional embellishment of reality. Having discarded these two choices for this talk, I was left without a title. Luckily I remembered an MIT colloquium that took place in the late fifties; it was one of the first I attended at MIT. The speaker was Eugenio Calabi. Sitting in the front row of the audience were Norbert Wiener, asleep as usual until the time came to applaud, and Dirk Struik who had been one of Calabi's teachers when Calabi was an undergraduate at MIT in the forties. The subject of the lecture was beyond my competence. After the first five minutes I was completely lost. At the end of the lecture, an arcane dialogue took place between the speaker and some members of the audience, Ambrose and Singer if I remember correctly. There followed a period of tense silence. Professor Struik broke the ice. He raised his hand and said: "Give us something to take home!"
