Making History
Alfred Piccaver - English tenor and "Son of Vienna"
Brief summary Alfred Piccaver (1884-1958) was an English tenor who spent most of his career at the Vienna State Opera between the wars. He was born at Long Sutton in Lincolnshire and his family moved to America when he was young. Their name was Peckover and it is thought the he changed his name to become more 'continental' as was the practice of the day. Piccaver trained in New York and then, in 1907, went to Prague where he was under contract for four years. He also appeared in Vienna and in 1911 he was snapped up by the Vienna State Opera. He remained there until his retirement in 1937. The 1920s and early 1930s were a golden period for the Vienna State Opera. It attracted such great singers as Lotte Lehmann, Elizabeth Schumann and the young Richard Tauber.
