Radical Psychology Spring 2001, Vol. 2, Issue 1. BEDSIDE AND PHILOSOPHICALLY ORIENTED CLINICAL PRACTICE By Shlomit C. Schuster A review of Alfred I. Tauber's Confessions of a Medicine Man: An Essay in Popular Philosophy . Cambridge, Mass., MIT Press, 1999. pp. 159
If a medical ethics can have a logo, then the ethics proposed in Confessions of a Medicine Man has one. The front piece of the book, a copy of Sir Luke Fildes' painting "The Doctor" ushers in its main theme, and this image accompanies the reader throughout the book: a concerned, pensive-looking physician sitting attentively beside the bed of a patient. In these confessions, Professor Alfred Tauber describes his life and career as an M.D.: his development from a young medical prince, empowered with technological and scientific knowledge, into a wise and empathetic witness of human suffering. Tauber sees his book as an autobiographical and philosophical essay in which he, as the son of a doctor, compares the medical world in which he grew up with that in which his own children are growing up. The exemplary life of Dr. Tauber senior seems to have been a major guiding light in the clinical practice that his son advocates. The father was confronted with exceptional moral dilemmas during the Hitler era in Europe, when he felt morally obliged to give the best medical treatment, not only to those close to him, his Jewish friends, family and community members, but also to the Nazis who would persecute and kill them.

The Generation of Diversity
Clonal Selection Theory and the Rise of Molecular Immunology
Scott H. Podolsky, Alfred I. Tauber
Scott Podolsky and Alfred Tauber have written a dense and exhaustive scholarly treatise about the history of [the generation of diversity]. They explore the intellectual setting in which the Tonegawa experiment was performed by reviewing original literature and interviewing the major actors in the drama...Everyone interested in the history of immunology and genetics should read this book.
Fred S. Rosen, Nature The Generation of Diversity is a remarkable mixture of formal history, literature review, and 'immunophilosophy.' It traces the origins of Burnet's clonal selection theory as a central paradigm of contemporary immunology, then reconciles that theory with the discoveries of the molecular era, and concludes with consideration of 'the immune self'...The authors' meticulously detailed background to the experimental work is a tour de force, which one would never expect to be attempted again, and it stands as a vibrant testament to an extraordinary era for immunology.

Author details Abstract
  • Rationing, the equitable The moral debate about rationing pits individual choice against communal interests. The advocacy of equitable distribution of healthcare resources originates in arguments for distributive justice and a revised version of individual autonomy. If autonomy is defined strictly in terms of atomistic individuality, then the social obligations and duties of persons are subordinated to their individual rights. Alternatively, when people are defined by their relationships, "relational autonomy" balances responsibilities against the claims of individual rights to maximise distributive justice. The concept of relational autonomy provides medicine with a philosophical basis for communal rationing of healthcare resources.

DIGNITY AND DIALOGUE
Exploring Medicine's Relational Foundations
Rosendal, June 9 - 13, 2002
A working seminar for physicians, health professionals, ethicists and philosophers from the Nordic countries. The conference is part of an effort to establish a Nordic Network for Humane Medicine. In association with the
Norwegian Medical Association and the Norwegian Cancer Union
Preliminary program
Practical information
Application ... Filosofisk Poliklinikk ("Philosophical out-patient clinic") and Department for General Practice at the University of Bergen invite to an early summer seminar in Rosendal . The topic is medical philosophy, in its most clinical aspects: How should physicians and other health workers act in clinical situations to support the dignity of the patient and his family?
Illness is by its very nature a threat to self-respect and dignity. Rational, technology-based medicine can imperil patients' dignity throught instrumentalist mistakes. Science cannot advice us on wisdom and sound judgement, because science cannot tell us what is good for man. Questions posed during the seminar include the following:
  • How do we know which actions constitute good help for others, for patients and their relatives?
