CBA Menu Alfred Tarski Notes Born in Warsaw, Poland when it was part of the Russian Empire, Tarski earned his Ph.D. in 1923 at the University of Warsaw. Tarski taught at the University until 1939 when he moved to the United States. In 1942 he started teaching at the University of California at Berkeley and by 1949 he was appointed professor of mathematics. From 1958-1960, Tarski was research professor at the Miller Institute of Basic Research and Science. He became professor emeritus in 1968 and died in Berkeley in 1983. Tarski wrote more than ten books including Geometry Undecidable Theories (1953), and Logic, Semantics, Metamathematics (1956). He made substantial contributions to several branches of mathematics including set theory, measure theory, model theory, and general algebra. In mathematics, an infinite group whose existence seems intuitively impossible is called a "Tarski Monster". In the first part I want to summarize in an informal way the main results of my investigations concerning the definition of truth and the more general problem of the foundations of semantics. These results have been embodied in a work which appeared in print several years ago. 1 Although my investigations concern concepts dealt with in classical philosophy, they happen to be comparatively little known in philosophical circles, perhaps because of their strictly technical character. For this reason I hope I shall be excused for taking up the matter once again. 2 Since my work was published, various objections, of unequal value, have been raised to my investigations; some of these appeared in print, and others were made in public and private discussions in which I took part. 3 In the second part of the paper I should like to express my views regarding these objections. Z Alfred Tarski Biography Alfred Tarski (January 14, 1901 - October 26, 1983) was a Polish logician considered to be one of the greatest logicians of all time in a manner after Aristotle, Gottlob Frege, and Kurt Gödel. Tarski made contributions to algebra, measure theory, mathematical logic, set theory and metamathematics. See Truth for a brief description of the "Convention T" standard in his "inductive definition of truth". This was an important contribution to symbolic logic and the philosophy of language. He joined the University of California, Berkeley in 1942, and became professor of mathematics there in 1949. (Givant 1986) provides a comprehensive bibliography of Tarski's writings. The concept of truth in formalized languages This paper is a long (over 100 pages) presentation of a mathematical definition of truth for logical languages. It first appeared in 1933 in Polish and then in 1935 in German, under the title "Der Wahrheitsbegriff in den Sprachen der deduktiven Disziplinen." It is thus sometimes referred to as the "Wahrheitsbegriff." Its first appearance in full in English was in 1956 in the first edition of Logic, Semantics, Metamathematics. Some fairly recent philosophical debate has examined to what extent Tarski's theory of truth for formalized languages can be seen as a correspondence theory of truth. The debate centres on how to read Tarski's condition of adequacy for a truth definition.
