Tarski Alfred: LOGIC, SEMANTICS, METAMATHEMATICS (Clarendon, 1956)
A collection of the historical papers by Tarski, in particular "On the concept of truth", which advanced the correspondence theory of truth: a statement is true if it corresponds to reality. Tarski's semantics has the goal of reducing all concepts to physical concepts. All semantic concepts are defined in terms of truth, and truth is defined in terms of satisfaction, and satisfaction is defined in terms of physical concepts.
Tarski created the first model theory for quantified predicate logic.
Behavior is a function of the state of the system and its environment; but what brings behavior about is its being required to achieve the goals.
Thagard Paul: MIND (MIT Press, 1996)
A clear and well-organized textbook on cognitive science.
The book describes a theory of early human development (how organic form is created, where does the information for the adult reside, etc) that applies the theory of nonlinear dynamic systems to biology and constitutes a landmark departure from cognitive theories.
The processes that govern human development are the same that act on the simplest organisms (and even some nonliving systems). They are processes of emergent order and complexity, of how structure arises from the interaction of many independent units. They integrate organic ontogeny at every level, from morphology to behavior.

The concept of truth in formalized languages
This paper is a long (over 100 pages) presentation of a mathematical definition of truth for logical languages. It first appeared in 1933 in Polish and then in 1935 in German, under the title "Der Wahrheitsbegriff in den Sprachen der deduktiven Disziplinen." It is thus sometimes referred to as the "Wahrheitsbegriff." Its first appearance in full in English was in 1956 in the first edition of

The concept of truth in formalized languages
Some fairly recent philosophical debate has examined to what extent Tarski's theory of truth for formalized languages can be seen as a correspondence theory of truth . The debate centres on how to read Tarski's condition of material adequacy for a truth definition. That condition requires that the truth theory have the following as theorems for all sentences P of the language for which truth is being defined:
:'P' is True if and only if p.

Alfred Tarski 's father was Ignacy Teitelbaum, a Jewish shopkeeper and businessman who traded in wood. One might reasonably ask why Tarski's father was not named "Tarski" and we will explain in a moment why Alfred Teitelbaum changed his name to Alfred Tarski. Let us just note for now that Alfred Tarski was actually born with the family name of Teitelbaum, and for about the first 22 years of his life was known as Alfred Teitelbaum. Ignacy Teitelbaum had married Rosa Prussak and, although Rosa never had a career, and therefore never had the opportunity to show her intellect, it was through his mother rather than his father that Tarski inherited his brilliance. Alfred had a brother Waclaw Teitelbaum to whom he was close as they were growing up. Alfred grew up in a well off family who valued education. He attended the Schola Mazowiecka (the Nizina Mazowiecka is the part of the lowland area of Poland in which Warsaw is situated) which was a High School for the intellectuals. The school gave Alfred a broader education than he would otherwise gave received. He studied subjects such as Russian, German, French, Greek and Latin in addition to the standard school topics. Of course he studied mathematics at the high school, and his teachers recognised that he had extraordinary talents in that topic, but it was not the subject that he intended to specialise in at university, rather he made the decision to study biology.

Alfred Tarski (1901-1983) Polish-American logician who created the field called "model theory" or semantics. Probably his best known work is "The concept of truth in formalized languages" (German version, 1936). In this, he tried to give "a materially adequate and formally correct definition of the term 'true sentence'", and obtained an important result closely related with Goedel's incompleteness theorem. That is, under very general assumptions, the set of sentences which are true in a model is not definable in that model. If you replace the concept "truth" by that of "provability", this result easily turns into Goedel's theorem. As is well known, these results are closely related with the old "liar paradox". Tarski's work on truth gave rise to the discipline called "model theory", which relates formal symbols to set-theoretical structures and enables us to speak of the reference of a symbol, the truth-value of a sentence, or the meaning of formal expressions in general. Tarski taught at the University of California at Berkeley since 1942, and that was quite conducive to raising many logicians in the West-coast, and the model theory became one of the major fields of logic. Tarski's theory of truth had a great impact on philosophy. For instance, philosophers such as Carnap and Popper were strongly influenced by that; and more recently, following Kripke's "Outline of a Theory of Truth" (1975) , various new theories of truth appeared, as an attempt to overcome some alleged "defects" contained in Tarski's original theory.
