William Henry Fox Talbot , chemist, linguist, archaeologist, and pioneer photographer was born in Melbury Abbas, Dorset, on February 11, 1800. Talbot was educated at Harrow and at Trinity College, Cambridge, and published many articles in the fields of mathematics, astronomy, and physics. He is best known for his development of the calotype, an early photographic process that was an improvement over the daguerreotype of the French inventor L.-J.-M. Daguerre. Talbot's calotypes involved the use of a photographic negative, from which multiple prints could be made; had his method been announced but a few weeks earlier, he and not Daguerre would probably have been known as the founder of photography. In 1802 Thomas Wedgwood, son of the famous potter Josiah Wedgwood, reported his experiments in recording images on paper or leather sensitized with silver nitrate. Although he could record silhouettes of objects placed on the paper, he was not able to make them permanent and, to his disappointment, he failed to record a camera image. Unaware of the work of Wedgwood and the French pioneers, Talbot, was led to invent a photographic process because of his inability to draw landscapes. On a holiday trip to Italy in 1833, the idea came to him of recording by chemical means the images he observed in his camera obscura.

Links For William Henry Fox Talbot (The Pencil of Nature) 2002 For William Henry Fox Talbot (The Pencil of Nature) 2002 A site-specific installation by Chris Meigh-Andrews for "Digital Responses", an exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, Sept. - Oct. 2002. This installation establishes a complex web of interrelationships between art, technology, light, time, and physical space. There are references to the origins of photographic imaging, to the nature and significance of light and vision and its relationship to the flow of communication systems, and to the interconnecting of two geographically separate sites. The work uses "renewable energy" as a metaphor, as the daylight at the site of the abbey and passing through an historic (and culturally significant) window sets the entire work in motion. Through the installation, past, present and future are linked electronically, geographically and conceptually. The Milliner's Window To take an inventory implies accounting for one's possessions and listing objects in relation to their identity as expressions of and testaments to ownership. Most often the owner or possessor of an inventory is a merchant or storekeeper, but an inventory may also be a formal list of the property of a person or estate, a tally of personal traits, aptitudes and skills, or an evaluation "of one's life and accomplishments." Taking an inventory, in a sense, is not so very different than taking a photograph in that each produces a testimony that acts as a marker of objects in "possession" for a certain duration, whether that time is a lifetime or the time of exposure. The photograph as an inventory is a notion which begins with photography's own beginnings in the work of William Henry Fox Talbot, for whom photography itself was in part an inventorial activity. In the following discussion I will focus on the idea of the "inventorial photograph"
