Talbot, William Henry Fox
English pioneer of photography. He invented the paper-based calotype process 1841, the first negative/positive method. Talbot made photograms several years before Louis Daguerre's invention was announced.
In 1851 he made instantaneous photographs by electric light and in 1852 photo engravings. The Pencil of Nature 1844-46 by Talbot was the first book illustrated with photographs to be published.
Talbot was born in Melbury, Dorset, and studied at Cambridge. He was elected Liberal member of Parliament for Chippenham 1833. During a trip to Italy he tried to capture the images obtained in a camera obscura and by 1835 had succeeded in fixing outlines of objects laid on sensitized paper. Images of his home, Lacock Abbey, Wiltshire, followed. Talbot was also a mathematician and classical scholar, and was one of the first to decipher the cuneiform inscriptions of Nineveh, Assyria.
In Talbot's calotype process, writing paper was coated successively with solutions of silver nitrate and potassium iodide, forming silver iodide. The iodized paper was made more sensitive by brushing with solutions of gallic acid and silver nitrate, and then it was exposed (either moist or dry). The latent image was developed with an application of gallo-silver nitrate solution, and when the image became visible, the paper was warmed for one to two minutes. It was fixed with a solution of potassium bromide (later replaced by sodium hyposulphite). Calotypes did not have the sharp definition of daguerreotypes and were generally considered inferior.

Talbot, William Henry Fox
Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 1 item Talbot, William Henry Fox (1800-77), English scientist, photographer, and philologist, a pioneer in photography, born in Lacock Abbey, Wiltshire. Having worked with a camera obscura for copying purposes, Talbot developed a chemical process for recording negative images on paper ( see History of Photography: Invention ). He published the details of his method, called photogenic drawing, on January 25, 1839, eight months before publication of the daguerreotype process invented by the French painter Louis Jacques Mand© Daguerre . In 1841 he invented the calotype process for developing the visible image outside the camera. The paper was exposed briefly and then bathed in a chemical solution. Talbot's photographic work is discussed and illustrated in his book Pencil of Nature (1844). Later he devoted himself to the study of philology and archaeology and was one of the first to read the cuneiform inscriptions of Nineveh.

From 1841 on he patented his numerous processes for making negatives and positive prints, called calotypes and later talbotypes. His patents threatened to impede the technical progress of the medium and Talbot was forced to release his processes. His relationships with other early photographers and photographic inventors were very bitter. Talbot wrote The Pencil of Nature (1844), one of the first books illustrated with photographs. Interested also in archaeology, he was one of the first to decipher the cuneiform inscriptions at Nineveh. See studies by A. Jammes (1974) and L. J. Schaaf (2000).

In January 1834, Talbot returned home to Lacock Abbey, an amalgamation of buildings incorporating the thirteenth- and fourteenth-century remains of a former abbey about eighty-five miles west of London. Within a few months, he began to experiment with the idea that had occurred to him at Lake Como and soon found that a sheet of fine writing paper, coated with salt and brushed with a solution of silver nitrate, darkened in the sun, and that a second coating of salt impeded further darkening or fading. Talbot used this discovery to make precise tracings of botanical specimens: he set a pressed leaf or plant on a piece of sensitized paper, covered it with a sheet of glass, and set it in the sun. Wherever the light struck, the paper darkened, but wherever the plant blocked the light, it remained white. He called his new discovery "the art of photogenic drawing."

Essays by Geoffrey Batchen, Catherine Coleman, Michael Gray, Gerardo F. Kurtz, Russel Roberts, Larry J. Schaaf, Mike Ware.

Louis-Jacques-Mande Daguerre may be the official father of photography, but William Henry Fox Talbot, Cambridge graduate, mathematician, philosopher, astronomer, and amateur archeologist, is the true father of modern photography. In 1840, Talbot invented the positive-negative process that permits endless reproductions, the same technique still used today. Traces of Light magnificently reproduces hundreds of his early photographic work, images that capture the shapes of fleeting, mysterious, everyday things such as flowers, leaves, feathers, and most especially lace. Also included are scholarly essays that explore Talbot's growth as an artist, his technical achievements, his near obsession with lace, and his relevance to the contemporary state of things.
