In 1833, after failed attempts at drawing using the camera lucida, an optical tool, William Henry Fox Talbot wrote: "[H]ow charming it would be if it were possible to cause these natural images to imprint themselves durably, and remain fixed upon the paper!" Talbot, a scientist, mathematician, and author, is credited with being one of the inventors of photography. In mid-1834 he began to experiment with light-sensitive chemistry, corresponding with the preeminent astronomer and scientist Sir John Herschel about their mutual photographic discoveries. By 1835 Talbot had placed his photographic investigations on hold to pursue other interests. Not wanting to be outdone, however, Talbot announced his invention of the photogenic drawing in January 1839, two weeks after Louis-Jacques Mandé Daguerre's daguerreotype process was introduced in France. Talbot's negative/positive process, the calotype, was introduced in 1840. His invention, which shortened exposure times and allowed multiple prints to be made from a single negative, became the basis for photography as it is practiced today. From 1844 to 1846, Talbot published

British inventor and pioneer in photography who made photographic prints on paper treated with silver chloride (1838) and produced the first book illustrated with photographs (1844–1846). Encyclopedia Talbot, William Henry Fox, 1800–1877, English inventor of photographic processes (see photography, still ). A man of enormously versatile intelligence, he invented the “photogenic drawing” process in 1834. From 1841 on he patented his numerous processes for making negatives and positive prints, called calotypes and later talbotypes. His patents threatened to impede the technical progress of the medium and Talbot was forced to release his processes. His relationships with other early photographers and photographic inventors were very bitter. Talbot wrote The Pencil of Nature (1844), one of the first books illustrated with photographs. Interested also in archaeology, he was one of the first to decipher the cuneiform inscriptions at Nineveh.

Credited as one of the inventors of photography, William Henry Fox Talbot began experimenting with light-sensitive chemistry in 1834. He kept in close contact with astronomer and photographer Sir John Herschel while developing the medium. In 1839, Talbot announced his invention of photogenic drawing two weeks after the daguerreotype process was unveiled in France. Talbot’s calotype process was introduced in 1840, a process that shortened exposure time and allowed for multiple prints to be made from one negative. Talbot published “The Pencil of Nature” from 1844 to 1846, the first commercially published book to contain photographs as illustrations.

WILLIAM HENRY FOX TALBOT by John H. Lienhard Click here for audio of Episode 1839. Today, let us accentuate the negative. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. W illiam Henry Fox Talbot was born into a very upper crust British family in 1800. His mother was an artist and art collector who made sure he had a fine education. When he was only 32, Talbot became a Member of Parliament. He was also bent toward art, and horribly frustrated that he didn't have the manual talent for it. Talbot eventually equipped himself with a camera obscura that cast traceable images on a piece of paper. But, even with that assistance, he complained, "the faithless pencil had only left traces on the paper melancholy to behold." That was 1833. During the next year, he did some work in mathematics, and then turned back to the problem of capturing images. He experimented with paper that he'd washed in table salt and treated with silver nitrate, so it would darken under sunlight.

William Henry Fox Talbot

William Henry Fox Talbot had been working on his photographic process for around eight years when he heard the news in 1839 that Daguerre had published his photographic process. Talbot rushed to publish his work. The two processes were quite different, although both relied on light-sensitive silver salts. Talbot realised the usefulness of a negative, allowing you to make as many prints as were required. His paper-based process also had the advantage of requiring less equipment in the field, but it took much longer to produce a print, while the Daguerre process - after the lengthy exposure - was almost instant, taking only a few minutes. Talbot's improved process, the Calotype, was published a couple of years later, and gave improved results, The sharpness was still limited by the paper texture, and it was best used where broad effect rather than fine detail was required. However there are some very fine examples showing good architectural detail in later work, particularly where the paper was waxed to improve its transparency.
