In 1828 George Green (1793-1841) discovered Green's Functions, which describe the basic Harmonic Mathematics of Physics . Green was a self-taught mathematician who worked in his family mill. Green's functions can be used with respect to any Division Algebra . At the time Green discovered them, the only Division Algebras known were the Real and Complex Numbers. Green used his Green's Functions to describe the Potential Theory of Electromagnetism. In 1831 James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879) was born. In 1843 , the Quaternion Division Algebra was discovered by William Rowan Hamilton In 1844 , N-dimensional Exterior and Interior Geometric Products were discovered by Hermann Grassmann In 1845 , the Octonion Division Algebra was discovered by John Graves and Arthur Cayley (1821-1895). Cayley, who practiced law to make money so that he could pursue mathematics, also invented Matrix Algebra Also in 1845 William Kingdon Clifford (1845-1879) was born.

The younger Tait brother Gavin , who may have been best of all was injured, as a youth. This prevented him from taking part in the heavy events. He became however one of the best sprinters in Britain of that ere.

The Inadequacy of Simple History Peter C. Kjærgaard
Draper's History of the Conflict between Religion and Science and White's A History of the Warfare of Science with Religion
1. The Construction of a Grand Narrative Towards the end of the nineteenth century evolutionary theory was characterised by Andrew Dickson White in his pro-scientific A History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom as coming into the theological world "like a plough into an ant-hill" awaking people from their "old comfort and repose" and making them swarm forth "angry and confused" (White 1960 I, 70). The celebrated occasion at the Oxford meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science in 1860, when bishop Samuel Wilberforce in the name of the Church confronted the Darwinian Thomas Henry Huxley, epitomises this picture. The meeting took place at the newly established University Museum that should provide Oxford science with an environment to compete with any British university. Thus, the scene was properly set for what has afterwards been taken as no less than symbolic of the nineteenth-century conflict between science and religion (Gilley 1981, 325). Wilberforce, the story goes, wittily tried to score a point against Huxley by asking whether he would prefer to have an ape in the family on his grandfather's or his grandmother's side. Huxley, on his side, elegantly riposted by implying that he would rather descend from a humble ape than a bishop, especially one using his high position to talk about things of which he was ignorant. Wilberforce, like several leading authorities from the Anglican Church and the English Catholics, had previously attacked Darwin's

m.t.kelly@qub.ac.uk Description: This collection consists of a selection of scientific papers and correspondence by and addressed to Chemist and Physicist, Thomas Andrews (1813-85), chiefly written in his own hand or copied by his daughters, Elizabeth Andrews and Mary K. Andrews, and forming part of the documents used in the preparation of 'The Scientific Papers of the Late Thomas Andrews. With a Memoir by P.G. Tait and A. Crum Brown' (London, 1889). The material appears to be organised according to his daughters' original arrangement in preparation for the 1889 book and includes a series of 10 scientific memoirs presented to Andrews by their authors, notebooks from lectures attended by Andrews on astronomy, physics and chemistry (c 1828-c 1840), correspondence with a range of academics including Michael Faraday, Sir Edward Sabine and Sir George Gabriel Stokes on scientific problems (1842-72), papers presented by Andrews to the Belfast Literary and Philosophical Society (c1836-c1874), and reports, drafts, notes and drawings relating to his research into the gaseous state of matter. Strengths: The Thomas Andrews Manuscript Collection is notable for its reflection of the work and interests of a reputable 19th century academic and scientist.

Janet's research interests include nitrogen nutrition of plants, and she is a world authority in the field of legume nodulation and their benefits to developing countries. Legumes can be grown in adverse environments including extreme temperatures and low nutrient soils. Forage, food and shelter are just some of the long term benefits they provide for both humans and animals.

William Thomson (Lord Kelvin) and Peter Guthrie Tait One of the most celebrated scientists of the 19th century, William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, was said to have more letters after his name than any man in the British Empire. His prodigious accomplishments included both theoretical insights and significant inventions. Among his contributions to theory were advances in hydrodynamics, an innovative synthesis of the mathematical relationship between electricity and heat, and major work in the second law of thermodynamics. In the practical realm he created the absolute temperature scale (which bears his name); worked on the development of the first transatlantic telegraph cable; and invented a telegraph receiver, a compass adopted by the British Admiralty, a form of analog computer for measuring tides, and sounding equipment. Always in the forefront of the leading scientists of the day, he collaborated with James Clerk Maxwell, Hermann von Helmholtz, James Prescott Joule, and Peter Guthrie Tait.
The Elements of Natural Philosophy was done with Tait, a pioneering physicist and mathematician whose work in advanced algebra formed the basis of vector analysis and was instrumental in the later development of modern mathematical physics. An abridgement of their original

On 'Peter Guthrie Tate, Topologist'
by Sebastiaan Verweij
Peter Guthrie Tait (1831-1901) was a famous nineteenth-century mathematician, who moved to Edinburgh when he was still young, entering Edinburgh Academy when he was ten; there he excelled in mathematics. The study of topology is defined in the Concise Oxford Dictionary as "the study of geometrical properties and spatial relations unaffected by the continuous change of shape or size of figures". Tait was one of the first to make a serious attempt at knot theory, fuelled by the ideas of Thomson, who claimed that knot theory was a way into understanding the problem of atoms. This idea was quite wrong, but Tait made a considerable contribution to knot theory, and it is here that Morgan's poem takes off.
