He was born at Dalkeith . After attending the Edinburgh Academy and University of Edinburgh , he went up to Peterhouse College, Cambridge , graduating as senior wrangler and first Smith's prizeman in 1852. As a fellow and lecturer of his college he remained in Cambridge for two years longer, and then left to take up the professorship of mathematics at Queen's College, Belfast . There he made the acquaintance of Thomas Andrews , whom he joined in researches on the density of ozone and the action of the electric discharge on oxygen and other gases, and by whom he was introduced to Sir William Rowan Hamilton and quaternions

In , Tait was chosen to succeed his old master, JD Forbes , as professor of natural philosophy at Edinburgh, and this chair he occupied till within a few months of his death. The first scientific paper that appears under Tait's name only was published in 1860. His earliest work dealt mainly with mathematical subjects, and especially with quaternions, of which he may be regarded as the leading exponent after their originator, Hamilton. He was the author of two text-books on themone an

The Life and Work of Sir William Rowan Hamilton:
    Some Nineteenth Century Perspectives
    About this Collection
This collection contains most of the biographical sketches, obituaries and essays on the life and work of Sir William Rowan Hamilton published in the nineteenth century. The authors are Robert and Charles Graves, Peter Guthrie Tait, Augustus De Morgan, Sir Robert Stawell Ball, Charles Pritchard, Clement Mansfield Ingleby and John Francis Waller. Most of the articles in this collection were published before the appearance of the Life of Sir William Rowan Hamilton by Robert Perceval Graves (Dublin: Hodges, Figgis and Co., 1882, 1885 and 1889), a massive three-volume biography of Hamilton, which includes a very considerable quantity of Hamilton's general correspondence and his poetry. Consequently there are factual inaccuracies in some of the earlier biographical sketches and obituaries included in this collection. In this collection, the most thorough account of Hamilton's mathematical work is to be found in the essay by Peter Guthrie Tait published in the North British Review . A substantial and accurate survey of Hamilton's life is provided by the chapter on Hamilton in Great Astronomers by Sir Robert S. Ball

North British Review genius But if to genius be added enormous erudition and untiring energy, we can hardly set limits to our expectations of what its possessor may achieve, if but life and health be granted to him. When such a phenomenon (as he may well be called) occurs, it behoves us common mortals to study and examine him. Everything about him, even, or perhaps especially, his peculiarities, is deserving of the most careful attention. Scotland has had such men. In the words of one of the most remarkable of them - `Yet Caledonia claims some native worth,
As dull Boeotia gave a Pindar birth;' few, of course, in actual number, because they are everywhere rare; but many, when her small population is considered. Such a list as Napier, Watt, Scott, Hunter, Black, Maclaurin, and Cochrane, through perhaps not including even all of the very first rank, forms a galaxy nowhere to be surpassed. But, besides these undoubted Scotsmen, there are others, such as Byron for instance, who are only not Scottish by a sort of legal fiction. This was the case with Hamilton whose name will not only rank with any in the foregoing list, but will undoubtedly be classed with those of the grandest of all ages and countries, such as Lagrange and Newton. His grandfather came over from Scotland to Dublin with two young sons, of whom Archibald became a solicitor in Dublin, James the curate of Trim, county Meath

    Peter Guthrie Tait
    Professor Peter Tait
Physicist. Born in Dalkeith. He was educated at the Edinburgh Academy with James Clerk Maxwell (1831-79), who became a life-long friend. Tait was appointed to the Chair of Natural Philosophy at Edinburgh (1860), a position for which Maxwell had been a candidate. With William Thomson (1824 - 1907), Tait wrote the important Treatise on Natural Philosophy , published in 1867. Jointly with Balfour Stewart, he wrote The Unseen Universe (1867) which was in such demand that they followed it with a sequel Paradoxical Philosophy (1878). Tait also wrote a classic paper on the trajectory of golf balls, his son Freddie Tait (1870 - 1900) having been a champion golfer. He died in Edinburgh. The Tait Professorship of Mathematical Physics remains an established Chair within the University of Edinburgh. If you have found this information useful please consider

    TAIREN
TAIREN TAIT, ARCHIBALD CAMPBELL (1811-1882), Anglican divine, archbishop of Canterbury, was born at Edinburgh on the 2ist of December 1811. His parents were Presbyterians, but he early turned towards the Scottish Episcopal Church, and was confirmed in his first year at Oxford, having entered Balliol College in October 1830 as a Snell exhibitioner from the University of Glasgow. He won an open scholarship, took his degree with a first-class in literis humanioribtts (1833), and became fellow and tutor of Balliol; he was also ordained deacon (1836) and priest (1838), and served the curacy of Baldon. Tait was a Churchman by conviction; but although the work of his life was all done in England, he remained a Scotsman to the end. It was the opinion of some that he never really understood the historical position of the English Church and took no pains to learn. John Tillotson, one of his predecessors in the archbishopric, was a favorite hero of his, and in some ways the two men resembled one another. But Tait had none of Tillotson's gentleness, and he rode roughshod over the obstacles in his way. He cannot be called a great ecclesiastical statesman, but he administered his office well and was undoubtedly one of the foremost public men of his day. See R. T. Davidson and D. Benham, Life of Archbishop Tait, 2 vols. (1891); A. C. Tait, Catharine and Craufurd Tait (1880).
