In 1911 the family presented to the University Library a number of books from Peter Guthrie Tait's own library, including a first printing of Newton's "Philosophiae naturalis principia mathematica" (1687) inscribed from Dr Findlater to F. G. Tait in 1883. Freddie was Peter Guthrie Tait's third son; he was British Amateur Golf Champion in 1896 and 1898, and was killed in the Boer War in 1900. The books are listed in the Library's pre-1985 guardbook catalogue. Friends of EUL Recent Donations

Jean, 1996-2001. Tait, Peter Guthrie (1831-1901)

Scottish physicist who was a close friend of Maxwell's and his contemporary in the study of fields. With Kelvin , he published Treatise on Natural Philosophy (1867), which was important for establishing energy within the structure of the theory of mechanics. (It was later republished under the title Principles of Mechanics and Dynamics by Dover Publications). Following up of Kelvin's suggestion that atoms were composed of tiny strings knotted in various configurations, Tait made the first systematic study of knots and their properties. Kelvin Maxwell

THE BRITISH SOCIETY FOR THE HISTORY OF MATHEMATICS Provisional Bibliography of Peter Guthrie Tait Compiled by Chris Pritchard PETER GUTHRIE TAIT (1831-1901): CENTENARY MEETING The Royal Society of Edinburgh July 2001 CONTENTS Introduction General Tait's Books Tait's Addresses ... Miscellaneous Introduction In contrast to his illustrious compatriots, Maxwell and William Thomson (Lord Kelvin), the life and scientific work of Peter Guthrie Tait has been the subject of relatively little research. This booklet has been prepared in the hope that it will stimulate interest among historians of science and provide a starting point for their enquiries. Tait’s biographer, Knott, catalogues some 365 papers, articles, laboratory notes, reviews and obituaries, together with two volumes of collected papers. The books that Tait wrote, in whole or in part, are also listed (see below: Knott, 1911, 351-365). This remains the most authoritative guide to the primary material of one of the nineteenth century’s most colourful scientists, though the biography that precedes it is a study in hagiography. The Royal Society Catalogue of Papers is another useful source.
