On this page: Wikipedia Mentioned In Or search: - The Web - Images - News - Blogs - Shopping List of Hungarians Wikipedia List of Hungarians The following is a list of famous Hungarians taken mainly from The Hungary Page at Nobel Prize Winners and Famous Hungarians http://www.thehungarypage.com/famous.htm . People with some degree of Hungarian origin (typically a Hungarian parent or grandparent) but who were not Hungarian citizens and who were not born in Hungary can be found in the List of people of Hungarian origin The Hungarian language uses the eastern name order for Hungarian names, in which the family name comes first, and the given name (or first name ) goes second. In foreign text contents, however, the western name order is used to avoid confusing those not familiar with this custom. As an example, the name Bolyai J¡nos is the ethnic form, in english text it will appear as Janos Bolyai accent marks stripped; Bolyai is the family name here. The names below are listed in Hungarian (eastern) order with some exceptions, most frequently for entertainers' names (e.g., Harry Houdini, the Gabor sisters). However, the Wikipedia articles that they link to have their names in western order (given name followed by family name).

GABOR SZEGO-ONE HUNDRED YEARS
by Lee Lorch
Reprinted (with permission) from the AWM Newsletter (Association for Women in Mathematics), vol. 25, no. 4, July-August 1995, pp. 14-15. Footnote . Szego was born on January 20, 1895 and died in July, 1995. A celebration of the centenary of Szego's birth was organized in Hungary. This statement, which Lee sent to be read at the meeting, will appear (in Hungarian translation) in Math. Lapok , along with three other remembrances. Lee and Szego's son Peter have been long-time mathematical collaborators. Gabor Szego was a great mathematician. His profound contributions are gathered in the three large volumes of his Collected Papers (edited by Richard Askey) and in the six books he authored or co-authored. They influenced greatly the content and direction of both pure and applied mathematics. They will continue to do so in the long future. His writings, like his lectures and discussions, were lucid. They led directly and gracefully to the essence. The breadth, depth and precision of his knowledge of mathematics were legendary, but never paraded. He helped; he did not overwhelm. One story, presumably apocryphal, came to me from one of his contemporaries, probably Karl Loewner. The young Szego was undergoing his doctoral examination. From the examiners came question after question, all answered swiftly, completely and correctly until one stumped him. Another professor turned to the questioner, saying that he found that question most intriguing but could not think of the answer himself, and asked his colleague for the answer. Came the reply:"I don't know. Had I known, I would not have bothered to ask."

Those of us familiar with publishing scientific papers in journals may be interested to hear about the great mathematician, Paul Erdos . With more than 450 collaborators, Erdos wrote over 1,500 papers , more than any mathematician who ever lived.
Many of Erdos's mathematical collaborators were prolific themselves. This situation has led many mathematicians to say 'I have an Erdos Number of 2', meaning they wrote a paper with someone who had once written a paper with the great Erdos. Anyone who writes a paper with someone with an Erdos Number of 2 receives an Erdos number of 3, and so on. Small Erdos numbers are very prestigious, possessed by only the world's most brilliant mathematicians, making 'Erdos Numbers' an entertaining topic at mathematical cocktail parties, and the subject of some careful, but light-hearted, study. Prompted by my mathematician friend, Richard Green (who has an Erdos number of 3) , I recently discovered that I had an Erdos number of now 7 ; details below, for anyone interested), as do many other members of the

Specialty Definition: Gabor Szego
(From Wikipedia , the free Encyclopedia) G¡bor Szeg¶ , Hungarian mathematician, born: January 20, 1895, Kunhegyes, Hungary, died: August 7 1985, Palo Alto, California, USA. His most important work was with problems, Toeplitz matrices and orthogonal polynomials. He was a commencing teacher to J¡nos von Neumann. His book Orthogonal polynomials published in 1939 is a classic within its field and today still widely used as a reference in polynomial theory. Bronze bust honors former University mathematician Szego
People strolling between Crow and Cupples I halls had to be taken aback this April to suddenly see a piece of art adorning the courtyard. Facing northward is a permanent fixture on the northeast Hilltop Campus: a five-foot-tall pedestal holding a bronze bust of mathematician Gabor Szego, a 20th-century giant in analysis and one of the most famous academicians ever to teach on a regular basis at Washington University without drawing a University paycheck. Szego (1895-1985) came to the University in 1934 and taught for four years before joining the faculty at Stanford University and making Stanford an enduring powerhouse in mathematics. Szego, a native Hungarian Jew, was forced out of his professorship at the University of Koenigsburg in Germany by the Nazis. Through personal and professional connections in St. Louis, he learned of Washington University. Szego taught his first two years at the University with the aid of a Rockefeller Foundation grant matched by funds from the St. Louis Emergency Committee in Aid of Displaced German Scholars. The second two years were funded by a local business and citizens committee. Because of the Great Depression, the University's budget was extremely tight. As a result, the University never was able to make an offer to Szego, whose leadership and wisdom directed the first four doctoral graduates in the Department of Mathematics in Arts and Sciences.
Group effort
The bust of Szego was not dropped by helicopter in darkness, but the story of Szego's quiet return to the University is intriguing, if not involved, and it includes mathematics department faculty and alumni.
