    28. John Millington Synge
Essay on synge and the Narrative Myth .
    http://athena.english.vt.edu/~marvin/syngeweb/cover.html
The first practitioners of magic were not conjurers of idle spirits; they did not pull legions of attendant demons from the foundations, consult wraiths from the past, nor entreat incubi of the air. No, to strike awe, to bewilder, to sometimes entrance belief by the unearthly effects of their art, these first magicians used only such mundane props and skills as juggler's balls and legerdemain. Similarly, by my own research and claims of Synge, my intent was, and perhaps impetuously still is, to consider an artist whose work once rather violently fragmented an audience, and argue that, years later, his work has become a nexus for a nation. Seem alchemy? Proving so would necessitate my own enchantments, and even arguing for such an immodest assertion would exhaust many paper mills or fill entire gigabytes of virtual space. Accordingly, then, for this paper, my claims are restrained, and my argument modest even , perhaps, straightforward and logical. I contend that John Millington Synge's use of Celtic mythology and folklore in " Riders to the Sea " merely provides Irish men and women, whether Protestant or Catholic, of the South or of the North, a primitive and shared narrative of a singular people, however intractable their religious and political views may be.

There he was saved for his native ireland by William Butler Yeats in 1899 and persuaded that he must write about his own land. He went off on a second trip to the isolated Aran Islands, where he studied the local dialects, characters, and folklore. He began to write plays of peasant life, employing the natural speech which he had learned. His first play, In the Shadow of the Glen , was performed in 1903 by the Irish National Theatre, of which Yeats and Lady Gregory were co-founders. In 1904, Synge's brief peasant tragedy, Riders to the Sea , was staged at this company's new home, the Abbey Theatre, and Synge became the Abbey's literary adviser. Other folk plays followed, including his comedy about a mock-hero, The Playboy of the Western World (1907), which caused patriots to riot at the theatre. Synge died in 1909.

B IOGRAPHICALLY the most remarkable feature of Synge's career was its brevity. In the six years which elapsed between 1903, when In the Shadow of the Glen was produced, to 1909, when he died, he rose from absolute obscurity to world fame, and provided us with six plays on which his reputation must rest." [ Following the completion, or perhaps we should say, the beginning, of his education at Trinity College, Dublin, John Millington Synge set out to see the world. On foot he travelled through Germany, Italy and France, absorbing the very essence of them through the lives, legends and literature of their people. It was in 1899 in a Parisian attic that W.B. Yeats discovered him. With the unselfish insight that is not one of the least of Yeat's claims to distinction, he realized that here was a real genius being wasted on various kinds of literary hackwork. He persuaded Synge to return to Ireland and devote that genius to the themes of Irish life and the needs of the recently initiated Irish theater movement. For some time after his return Synge spent his time renewing his kinship with Ireland, sensing the life and belief of its peasantry. Especially was he interested in those islands just off the west coast, and his famous one-act play

    36. John Millington Synge (1871-1909)
Biography of Irish playwright john Millington synge, plus links to all of his works currently in print.
    http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/clsc26.html
John Millington Synge Synge was born near Dublin in 1871 and died in 1909. He received his degree from Trinity College, Dublin, then went to Germany to study music and later to Paris, where he lived for several years working at literary criticism. Here, he met a compatriot, William Butler Yeats, who persuaded Synge to live for a while in the Aran Islands and then return to Dublin and devote himself to creative work. The Aran Islands (1907) is the journal of Synge's retreat among these primitive people. The plays of Irish peasant life on which his fame rests were written in the last six years of his life. The first two one-act plays, In the Shadow of the Glen , (1903), a comedy, and Riders to the Sea (1904), considered one of the finest tragedies ever written, were produced by the Irish National Theatre Society. This group, with Synge, Yeats and Lady Gregory as co-directors, organized in 1904 the famous Abbey Theatre. Two comedies, The Well of the Saints (1905) and The Playboy of the Western World (1907), were presented by the Abbey players. The latter play created a furor of resentment among Irish patriots stung by Synge's bitter humor.

A FTER nine days of constant grieving for her missing son, Michael, who, she feels certain, has been drowned, old Maurya has fallen into a fitful sleep. Her daughter, Cathleen, is busy with household tasks, when another daughter, Nora, slips quietly into the kitchen with a bundle given her by the young priest. It contains part of the clothes taken from the body of a drowned man far in the north. They have been sent to Maurya's cottage with a view to possible identification. As Maurya shows signs of waking the girls hide the bundle until sometime when they shall be alone. Maurya's grieving for Michael is now coupled with fear of losing Bartley, her only remaining son. Five sons and a husband she has already lost to the sea. Will that insatiable tyrant insist on taking her sixth. The priest says not. But now Bartley insists that he will cross to the mainland this very day, in spite of winds and high seas, to dispose of a horse at the fair. In a fit of pique at this only remaining son for not listening to her pleas, Maurya lets him go without her blessing. The girls persuade her to intercept him with the lunch they had forgotten to give him and so to make opportunity for that blessing a mother should have given.

    http://www.ibiblio.org/sally/Synge.html
Critical notes on John Millington Synge and "Playboy of the Western World"
"The Playboy of the Western World" was produced for the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, Irelanda theater founded by W. B. Yeats and others to foster a new generation of Irish drama (see the chapter by Seamus Deane for further discussion). The aim of the Abbey group was to promote drama that spoke positively for the Irish peoplepositively and compellingly to them and for them in conjunction with their quest for independent statehood. The following passages by various critics and writers should help you understand the context of the play. From W. B. Yeats, "J. M. Synge and the Ireland of His Time," Essays and Introductions (New York: Collier Books, 1968) "A patriotic journalism which had seen in Synge's capricious imagination the enemy of all it would have young men believe, had for years prepared for this hour . . . . The preparation had begun after the first performance of `The Shadow of the Glen,' Synge's first play, with [his] assertion that he had taken his fable and his characters, not from his own mind . . . but `from a writer of the Roman decadence.' . . . the frenzy that would have silenced his master-work was, like most violent things, artificial, that defence of virtue by those who have but little . . . "As I stood there watching, knowing well that I saw the dissolution of a school of patriotism that held sway over my youth, Synge came and stood beside me, and said, `A young doctor has just told me that he can hardly keep himself from jumping on to a seat, and pointing out in that howling mob those whom he is treating for venereal disease.'
