66. The History Of Matrices
james joseph sylvester. james sylvester, Presidential Address to British Association, 1869. Mathematics is the music of reason. james sylvester
http://www.ualr.edu/lasmoller/matrices.html
Did you know . . .?
The history of matrices goes back to ancient times! But the term "matrix" was not applied to the concept until 1850.
"Matrix" is the Latin word for womb, and it retains that sense in English. It can also mean more generally any place in which something is formed or produced.
The orgins of mathematical matrices lie with the study of systems of simultaneous linear equations. An important Chinese text from between 300 BC and AD 200, Nine Chapters of the Mathematical Art Chiu Chang Suan Shu ), gives the first known example of the use of matrix methods to solve simultaneous equations. In the treatise's seventh chapter, "Too much and not enough," the concept of a determinant first appears, nearly two millennia before its supposed invention by the Japanese mathematician Seki Kowa in 1683 or his German contemporary Gottfried Leibnitz (who is also credited with the invention of differential calculus, separately from but simultaneously with Isaac Newton). More uses of matrix-like arrangements of numbers appear in chapter eight, "Methods of rectangular arrays," in which a method is given for solving simultaneous equations using a counting board that is mathematically identical to the modern matrix method of solution outlined by

Biographical Note
The English children's writer, novelist, and dramatist Lucy Lane Clifford (Mrs. W. K. Clifford) was born in 1846. On April 7, 1875, Lucy Lane married mathematics professor and philosopher William Kingdon Clifford, whom she met while studying art in London. The Cliffords' home became a gathering place for distinguished literary and scientific persons of the day, including Charles Darwin, Herbret Spencer, John Tynall, Thomas Huxley, Henry James, Rudyard Kipling, James Russell Lowell, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Leslie Stephen, Violet Hunt, and George Eliot. After the death of William Clifford in 1879, the friendships that she developed with George Eliot, Henry James and others not only continued but flourished. George Eliot, who was one of several persons who contributed to a small Civil List pensin arranged to support Lucy Clifford and her two daughters, encouraged Clifford to find comfort in activities such as her writing.

Maria Gaetana Agnesi
Maria Gaetana Agnesi was born in the city of Milan on May 16, 1718. (Today Milan is part of Italy.) Agnesi was the oldest of twenty-one children. As a child she studied Latin and mathematics. Later she wrote a calculus textbook in Italian that included a curve now called the Witch of Agnesi . After her father died in 1752, Agnesi started a home for old and sick women. She spent all of her time and money working there. Agnesi died in Milan on January 9, 1799.
Apollonius of Perga Apollonius was born in Perga around 262 BC. (Perga was a Greek city in what is now Turkey.) As a young man, Apollonius traveled to the great library at Alexandria. He also visited the city of Pergamum, which had another important library. Apollonius studied astronomy and geometry. He wrote several books, including the Conics. Apollonius died in Alexandria around 190 BC. Back to Top
Aristotle Aristotle was born in 384 BC in the city of Stagirus in northern Greece. When he was seventeen, Aristotle traveled to Athens to study at the Academy run by the philosopher Plato. Later Aristotle became the tutor of Alexander the Great. Later Alexander helped Aristotle found his own school. Aristotle wrote books on astronomy, physics, geology, and other types of science, as well as politics and logic. Though he was not as interested in mathematics, many of his students were. Aristotle died in 322 BC in the Greek city of Chalcis, where his mother had been born.

Thomas Bullock observed: "The mosquitoes have been very plaguy the past night; they are more numerous there than any other place on our route." The last of the pioneer wagons were ferried over by 2 p.m. All the wagons were once again moved into a circle. Phinehas Young's wagon was the exception. It did not return from the mountains until the evening. The ferry operation continue all night and by daylight the last of the Missouri companies had been ferried over. Elkhorn River, Nebraska:
Charles C. Rich sent a note back to John Scott at Winter Quarters ordering him to send the cannon "as the whole camp is waiting." He also wrote to Alpheus Cutler, the presiding member of the High Council, requesting that he help Brother Scott in sending the cannon, boat, and Nauvoo temple bell. Ira Eldredge's fifty, part of the Daniel Spencer Company officially started their pioneer trek, leaving the Elkhorn River. The Eldredge fifty consisted of 76 wagons and 177 people. The captains of tens were Isaac Haight, Hector Haight, Samuel Ensign, Erastus Bingham, and George Boyes.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. DR. SYLVESTER JAMES GATES JR. IS KNOWN TO BE ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT SUPERSTRING THEORY AND SUPERSYMMETRY, BUT ANOTHER PASSION HAS HIM SPEAKING OUT HIS COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION. You have to be a brave person to persevere in a field like theoretical physics. It requires a command of both science and mathematics. The work is often faddish and fast-paced, and the prospects of getting a job are few. But you also have to be a brave person to step in as the primary parent and take precocious 8-year-old twins along with you on a yearlong sabbatical to do research at one of the top research institutions in the United States. Or maybe it is not courage that you need, but a defined self-assuredness, a keen sense of humility, and a pronounced dedication to the principles of family and community. Then again, perhaps, you just have to be Dr. Sylvester James Gates Jr., the first John S. Toll professor of physics at the University of Maryland College Park.

SYLVESTER, J. J.
SYLPHSYLVANITE Hypothetical and Disjunctive Syllogisms. The term syllogism has been extended to cover certain forms of ratiocination which are not based on categorical propositions. The propriety of this extended use is open to question and is denied by some logicians. a. Hypothetical " Syllogisms " are those in which one premise is a hypothetical proposition, the other a categorical. Two forms are possible (i.) modus ponens (which establishes the consequent set clown in the major premise): if A is B, it is C (or C is D); A is B; therefore A is C (or C is D), and (ii.) modus tottens (which disproves the antecedent): if A is B, it is C (or C is D); A is not C (or C is not D); therefore it is not B (or A is not B). In (i.) a valid conclusion follows from the affirmation of the antecedent: in (ii.) from denying the consequent, but in neither case conversely. The distinction is of greater importance than would appear when one realizes how obvious the facts really are, and in practice it happens frequently that speakers claim with success to disprove a proposition by disproving the fact alleged in support of it, or to establish a hypothesis by showing that facts agree with its consequences. b. Disjunctive " Syllogisms " are those in which one premise is a disjunctive proposition, the other a categorical proposition which states or denies one of the two alternatives set forth. Again two forms occur: (i.) modus ponendo tcllens which by the affirmation of one alternative denies the other (A is either B or C; A is B; therefore it is not C: or either A is B, or C is D; A is B; therefore C is not D: or either A or B is C; A is C; therefore B is not C); (ii.) modus tollendo ponens which by the denial of the one, establishes the validity of the other alternative (A is either B or C; A is not B; therefore it is C : or either A or B is C; A is not C; therefore B is C: or either A is B, or C is D; A is not B; therefore C is D). The validity of such arguments depends upon the sense in which we understand the disjunctive proposition: we must assume that the alternatives are mutually exclusive.1
