James Joseph was educated at the Royal Institution School, Liverpool, he proceeded to St. John's College, Cambridge, where he earned the coveted Second Wrangler in mathematics in 1837. Unable to swear to the Thirty-nine Articles of the Anglican Church, however, Sylvester was barred from obtaining a degree. Still, he earned the post of Professor of Natural Philosophy at University College, London, on Nov. 25, 1837.
    Single all his life, and dedicated more to public research than to regular teaching, Sylvester led a restless academic life. Appointed as Professor of Mathematics, University of Virginia, 1841, the year he obtained an M.A. degree from the University of Dublin, he resigned soon after, in March 1842, evidently because of an altercation with a student who had insulted him. He returned to England to work at Equity and Law Life Assurance Company from 1845 to 1855. Sylvester was called to the Bar in 1850. His next post was as Professor of Mathematics, Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, from 1855 to 1870. During this stint he became President of the London Mathematical Society and of the Mathematical and Physical Section of the British Association.

    The Laws of Verse (1870), which he practiced with as marked originality and flare as he did the analysis of numbers. His finest poem, "Kepler's Apostrophe," movingly expresses the fierce unrepentance of any free-thinking researcher. Sylvester lived unemployed in London until 1877, when Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore engaged him as Professor of Mathematics. In America he founded the American Journal of Mathematics. By 1883 he left Baltimore to become Savilian Professor of Geometry at New College, Oxford University, until his retirement in 1894. Among the greatest mathematicians of the 19th century, Sylvester founded invariant algebra. He died on March 15, 1897, and was interred in the Jewish Cemetery, Ball's Pond, London.

    Oh! why those narrow rules extol? These but restrain from ill, True virtue lies in strength of soul And energy of will.
    To all that's great and high aspires, Prompts to the path of fame From Heaven draws down Promethean fires And wraps the soul in flame.
    With brow erect, eye undismayed Confronts the midday sun, Nor sleeps inglorious in the shade Of praises cheaply won;
    Scans not too curiously the chance Of good or evil fate, But with a free and fearless glance Knocks at Hope's, golden gate;
    The truthful course pursues and knows By Heaven-imparted light, And scorns to shape to outward shows Its conscious sense of right.
    Still, while it renders Reason's name The meed of honour due Forgets not sacred instincts claim Their share of reverence too.
    The frown of unjust censure braves, Retreats not with the tide, But nobly stems and stills the waves Of prejudice and pride. Notes ] Prometheus stole fire from the Classical gods to enable humans to found civilization.

    Quotations "Mathematics is not a book confined within a cover and bound between brazen clasps, whose contents it needs only patience to ransack; it is not a mine, whose treasures may take long to reduce into possession, but which fill only a limited number of veins and lodes; it is not a soil, whose fertility can be exhausted by the yield of successive harvests; it is not a continent or an ocean, whose area can be mapped out and its contour defined: it is limitless as that space which it finds too narrow for its aspirations; its possibilities are as infinite as the worlds which are forever crowding in and multiplying upon the astronomer's gaze."

    Sylvester, James Joseph (1814-1897)
    An English mathematician and lawyer who, in 1850, first used the term " matrix " in mathematics and gave it its present meaning of a rectangular array of numbers from which determinants may be formed. Together with Arthur Cayley , he founded the theory of invariants . Hot-headed and vociferous in opposition of anti-Semitism, he was thrown out of the University of London for threatening another student with a table-knife. Later he studied at Cambridge, emerging as Second Wrangler but without a degree (though in 1871 he earned an MA) because, as a Jew, he refused to accept the articles of the Church of England. After a spell working as an actuary and a barrister, and also taking private pupils (one of whom was Florence Nightingale), he met Cayley, with whom he forged a life-long friendship and collaboration, and returned to mathematics. He became professor of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich (1855-1870) and at the newly established Johns Hopkins University at Baltimore (1877-1883), founding the American Journal of Mathematics , before accepting the Savilian chair at Oxford (1883-1894). Remarkably, especially in the field of mathematics, he produced an extraordinary flood of ideas well into his old age. At 82, he worked out the theory of compound partitions. He also published on the roots of

    Stage name
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
    A stage name , or a screen name for movie stars , is a pseudonym used by performers and actors . A clown name is a stage name for clown performer People may take a stage name because their real name is considered unattractive, dull, amusing for the wrong reasons, or projects the wrong image; or because they wish to remain anonymous in relation to another sphere of work. In past decades stage names were used because certain actors' real names were considered too "ethnic." In the United Kingdom , the actors' union Equity stipulates that no two members may have the same working name, and therefore actors are often forced to modify their name or take a new one. The Screen Actors Guild has similar rules in the United States A consideration in choosing a stage name is ease of use. Actor's Equity Association (AEA) advises performers to select a name that is easy for others to pronounce, spell and remember. A survey of the three U.S. regional heads of AEA reveals that a performer whose name is difficult to pronounce, spell, or remember is less likely to be hired than other performers. Many performers refer to their stage name as their "professional name."

    d. March 15, 1897, London British mathematician who with Arthur Cayley founded the theory of algebraic invariants, algebraic-equation coefficients that are unaltered when the coordinate axes are translated or rotated. In 1838 Sylvester became professor of natural philosophy at University College, London. In 1841 he accepted the professorship of mathematics at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, but resigned after only three months. Four years later he went to London, where he became an actuary for an insurance company, retaining his interest in mathematics only through tutoring. One of the most notable of his private pupils was Florence Nightingale. In 1846 he became a law student at the Inner Temple, and in 1850 he was admitted to the bar. While working as a lawyer Sylvester began an enthusiastic and profitable partnership with Cayley. Together, they created the theory of algebraic forms. From 1855 to 1870 Sylvester was professor of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. He went to the United States once again in 1876 to become professor of mathematics at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore. While there he founded (1878) and became the first editor of the American Journal of Mathematics

    Sylvester, James (1814-1897)

    Eccentric and gifted English mathematician who was a close friend of Cayley . He was absent-minded, but nonetheless an accomplished poet and musician. After a brief stint as a professor in America, he returned to England. Here, he could not find a job and became a lawyer, in which capacity he met Cayley . Following a professorship at the Royal Military Academy Woolwich from 1855-1870, he became a professor at Johns Hopkins in 1876. He invented Sylvester's dialytic method for eliminating an unknown in two polynomial equations. He also collaborated with Cayley in his work on forms, discovering canonical binary forms for odd degrees. Forms for even degrees were later solved by E. K. Wakeford Sylvester also founded the American Journal of Mathematics in 1878. In 1883, he returned to England to fill the Savilian professorship of Geometry at Oxford after the death of Henry Smith . At the ripe age of 71, he invented the theory of reciprocants (differential invariants).
