The “Stad” is a recently built three-masted clipper intended for the charter trade, as well as a training center for unemployed young people. The start of the year 2000 saw the birth of a new sailing ship: The Stad Amsterdam - a clipper, built along the classical lines of this type of ship but equipped with the latest technology. The Stad was the result of a joint project between the city of Amsterdam (the Netherlands) and the human resources company, Ranstad. They built a ship for chartering, which at the same time would become a training center for young, unemployed people, to enable them to learn a new profession at sea. The Stad was also destined to become a symbol of the city whose name she bears, and of the naval history of her native country, the Netherlands. In fact, it was decided to build a clipper, a type of vessel considered revolutionary at the end of the nineteenth century, a period of splendor for the Dutch merchant marine, which at that time was one of the great naval powers worldwide. Clippers are light vessels, the fastest of all sailing ships. For that reason, the naval architect Gerard Dijkstra designed this 76-meter ship respecting the original drawings of Dutch shipbuilders in olden times. However, he outfitted her with the most up-to-date navigation and housing equipment. Likewise, it must not be forgotten that the Stad Amsterdam is a luxury vessel with all the comforts of a great five-star hotel.

The Ukrainian sailing ship KHERSONES, owned by the Kerch Shipping Technology Institute, docked in Valparaíso in January 1997, under the command of Captain Mikhail Sukhina, with a crew of 42 men, from officers to crew members, plus a group of 64 cadets and 79 “trainees”, most of whom were German. The ship operators – INMARIS PERESTROIKA SAILING – of Hamburg, requested technical, logistic and administrative assistance from the Chilean Brotherhood of Cape Horn Captains, as the ship would follow the Valparaíso - Buenos Aires via Cape Horn route under sail – which is known to be uncertain and full of risks even for large sailing ships such as the KHERSONES, which is 108.60 m. long. Reciprocating the co-operation received from the Brotherhood, INMARIS invited the author of these lines to take part in the voyage in order to act as advisor to the commander and play the part of Observer, verifying that the ship would travel exclusively under sail in tracks from latitude 50º S in the Pacific to latitude 50º S in the Atlantic. The voyage was full of new experiences for the crew and the “trainees”. The ship sailed away 300 miles from the Chilean coast seeking favourable winds – which were found – and advanced swiftly towards the South at speeds never below 12 knots. There was great activity on board, preparing to appropriately confront the violence of the winds and the heavy swells typical of the tempestuous Drake Passage, including the making of a safety net extending from bow to stern to prevent a man from falling overboard as a result of the heavy rolls - which normally exceeded 20º - as the ship had no gunwales.

"According to HealthGrades, the health-care-rating organization that conducted the study, needless deaths averaged 195,000 a year in 2000, 2001, and 2002. 'That's the equivalent of 390 jumbo jets full of people dying each year,' says Dr. Samantha Collier, vice president of medical affairs." - Newsweek, August 2, 2004
"The study by Health Grades Inc., a health-care consulting firm in Colorado that rates hospitals, estimated that medical errors in U.S. hospitals contributed to almost 600,000 patient deaths over the past three years, double the number if deaths from a study published in 2000 by the Institute of Medicine."- The Wall Street Journal, July 27, 2004
"Start with healthgrades.com. This is a website you can go to that will give you the lowdown on some 650,000 doctors across the country. You can actually sort their names by specialty, location, they give you everything from board certification to number of years in the profession, lots of details, lots of data." - CNN

M.A. student, California State University, San Bernardino, U.S.A. I do not believe that there is a hard-fast rule for when first (or common) languages should be allowed or prohibited in the classroom. I do know that most of my own philosophy is based on my own experience as a second-language learner of Spanish, as well as the theoretical viewpoint that language is what we use to create and express who we are, not something that should be 'studied' as an end in itself. [-1-] So my answer to whether or not to allow non-target languages in the classroom is, "Yes. Conditionally." When I am introducing new vocabulary in which meaning can be expressed through drawings, noises, pantomimes or the like, I use the target language exclusively. However, when attempting to communicate ideas that are abstract, I use/permit first language. All in all, I believe input needs to be COMPREHENSIBLE. I had a Spanish teacher who insisted on NO English in her classroom or office. I cannot tell you how many times I asked questions to which I simply did not understand the answer. (I finally resorted to dragging a native speaker with me every time I went to her office so he could translate for me after we left.)
