G.M.F.W. Mededelingen Overlijdingsbericht Dirk Struik Dit bericht werd op 23 oktober 2000 verzonden aan alle leden van wie op dat moment een electronisch postadres bekend was. Het betreft een wijziging naar aanleiding van het overlijden van Dirk Struik, op het in een eerder bericht reeds aangekondigde wijziging op het programma van het historisch colloquium dat gepland stond voor 27 oktober 2000. Het programma is inmiddels verwijderd maar is wel opgenomen in een verslag van de bijeenkomst. Geacht GMFW-lid, Op zaterdag 21 oktober is Dirk Struik overleden op de leeftijd van 106 jaar. In verband hiermee gooit GMFW haar programma van het historisch colloquium vrijdag aanstaande om. In plaats van de lezing van Gerard Alberts over Van Wijngaarden herdenken wij om 16:00 uur Dirk Struik met een persoonlijke herinnering van Marjolein Kool, en een voordracht van Gerard Alberts over Struik als historicus van de wiskunde. Ga naar: Home BWSA Alfabetische index Zoeken Email SCHERMERHORN, Dirk ingenieur in de Koezbas-Kemerovo-kolonie in de Sovjet-Unie, is geboren te Groot Schermer op 26 april 1900 en overleed in de Sovjet-Unie op 26 november 1937. Hij was de zoon van Teunis Schermerhorn Wzn, boer, en Trijntje Honig. Op 24 juli 1924 trad hij in het huwelijk met Francisca Johanna Mus, tandarts, met wie hij een dochter en twee zoons kreeg. In de Sovjet-Unie werd zijn naam als Shermergor (transcriptie) geschreven. Schermerhorn volgde de Hoogere Burger School in Alkmaar en ging na zijn eindexamen in Delft de studie voor civiel-ingenieur volgen. Zijn oudste broer Willem had daar landmeetkunde gestudeerd. De beide andere broers werden boer en hun zuster studeerde Nederlands. Al op de HBS leerde Schermerhorn zijn latere vrouw kennen. Dirk Struik, die in 1917 op deze school als wiskundeleraar inviel, herinnerde zich nog tientallen jaren later dat zij een jeugdig stel vormden. De Schermerhorns kenden een hechte familieband, die niet verstoord werd door het feit dat Dirk, waarschijnlijk in 1921, communist werd en daarmee buiten het liberale of vrijzinnig-democratische patroon van de familie viel. In Delft was Schermerhorn secretaris van het Delftsch Studenten Gezelschap voor Sociale Studie geworden. Waarschijnlijk leerde hij daar de al afgestudeerde ingenieur Anton Struik kennen, die net als zijn broer Dirk gegrepen was door het communisme. Uit deze Delftse kring zouden begin jaren twintig verschillende ingenieurs uit idealisme om in de Sovjet-Unie een nieuwe wereld op te bouwen naar Kemerovo in Siberië vertrekken. Dit gebeurde nadat

Foi ós Estados Unidos en 1926 para tomar posesión dun posto de profesor no Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Chegou coa súa esposa, Saly R. Ramler, unha matemática checoslovaca. Ela morreu en 1993 á idade de 99 anos. Na súa época de bacharelato en Holanda, Struik foi socialista. Admirador das ideas marxistas, viu con bos ollos a chegada do comunismo na revolución rusa do 1917 e foi testemuña da súa caída, máis de setenta anos despois. Struik, a highly respected analyst and geometer and an internationally acclaimed historian of mathematics, died at his home in Belmont on Saturday. He celebrated his 106th birthday on September 30. Professor Struik was a member of the MIT mathematics faculty from 1928 until 1960, and remained intellectually active throughout his life. Beginning in 1912, Professor Struik was educated very broadly in mathematics and physics at the University of Leiden, taking courses from Lorentz and de Sitter. After a short interruption (for lack of funds), he was invited by J. A. Schouten to do research on tensor analysis and differential geometry. It was during this time that he met and soon married Saly Ruth Ramler, a Czech mathematician and accomplished modern dancer. Dr. Ramler wrote her doctorate on the axiomatics of affine geometry under G. Pick and G. Kowalewski at the University of Prague in 1918, and as Professor Struik later wrote, "Ruth may well have been the first woman at the more than 500-year-old university to receive a doctorate in mathematics." With a stipend from a Rockefeller Fellowship, the Struiks moved to Rome and then to G¶ttingen, which was becoming a major mathematical center. There they met and worked with Cartan, Courant, Hilbert, Landau and Noether, among others. Professor Struik also collaborated with MIT Professor Norbert Wiener, who in the spring of 1926 offered him a lectureship beginning that fall.
