Eloge Dirk Jan Struik, Noted Historian of Mathematics Eloge Abridged and Modified from Robert Hardman, the Boston GLOBE Dirk Jan Struik died on October 21 at the age of 106. A professor emeritus of mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he was born in Rotterdam in 1894, the son of a high school teacher of mathematics. Dr. Struik came to the United States in 1926 to teach at MIT. His wife Sally R. Ramler, a native of Czechoslovakia and also an accomplished mathematician, accompanied him. A socialist, Professor Struik was an adherent of Marxist ideas, who welcomed the rise of Leninist communism, beginning with the October Russian Revolution of 1917 and witnessed its demise over seven decades later. He was a Marxist, but not a Marxist-Leninist Communist, until his death. During the anti-Communist fervor in the US after World War II, which Struik described at "half reminiscent of Nazi Germany, half of Alice in Wonderland," he was denounced as a traitor in 1951 by Federal Bureau of Investigation informant Herbert Philbrick before the House Un-American Activities Committee. Until the charges were dropped in 1955, he was suspended with pay from his professorship at MIT. In a 1994 article in HISTORIA MATHEMATICA, David Rowe asserted that Dr. Struik became a cause celebre, traveling about the country to talk about the freedom of speech.
