Stoller has investigated modalities to improve the management of urinary stone disease. The etiology of urinary stones remains unknown and specifically, the origination of calcium-based stones is ill-defined. Stoller has investigated Randall plaques as the nidus for the primordial calculus. He has mapped these lesions endoscopically and correlated them with stone composition and 24-hour urinary constituents. He has been able to visualize them with high resolution radiography in cadaveric kidneys and has found them to penetrate deep within the papillae. These lesions are visible on thin-cut spiral C/T in vivo images. Three-dimensional reconstructions from papillary specimens may help find where stone development begins. The etiology of cystine urinary stone disease is unique and differs from that seen in patients who form calcium stones. Stoller has investigated a family pedigree and identified mutations on the SLC3a1 gene. A DNA library has been developed for cystine stone formers and their families. A knock-out mouse model for this gene is being developed in the hopes of developing new prophylactic agents and to better understand Type 1 cystinuria. Stoller has found linkage of Type II cystinuria to 19q13.1 gene. He has also found codominant inheritance of two cystinuric alleles at the 19q13.1 locus that produce an extreme cystine stone-forming phenotype.

On August 12, 1993, the staff of Exeter College, Oxford, were summoned to a meeting by Simon Stone, the college's home bursar. They arrived, mildly curious, expecting to hear Stone announce the name of the college's new rector. Instead the address took an unexpectedly personal turn. Stone, a former naval commander, began by referring to his recent, unconventionally floppy hairstyle. Moving nervously to the point, he said the hair was just an outward sign of a much bigger change that was about to take place in his life. Stone, 46, explained he was 'one of those unfortunate people' born with the brain of a woman in the body of a man. 'It is a cross I have had to bear since I was a child.' Joining the Navy, he went on, was all part of an increasingly futile effort to make the best of life as a man. But after years of heart-searching, he had decided to change the way he looked to match the way he felt inside. 'When I return to work on Monday, September 13, it will be as Ms Susan Marshall.'

... [Text Version] Marshall Ave. /Rice Creek County: Calhoun City/Township: Marshall Location: Marshall Ave. /Rice Creek Year Built: About this Bridge: The Marshall Avenue Bridge is eligible for the National Register as an example of a stone masonry-arch bridge, a structural type that is extemely rare in Michigan. Despite an abundance of stone in various forms throughout the state and an indigenous tradition of masonry construction, bridges were rarely built of stone in Michigan. Only a handful of stone masonry spans remain in place today, all of which employ short-span arches that spring from stone sidewalls. Multiple-span stone-arch bridges are particularly unusual. Very little information is available about the history of the three-span Marshall Avenue Bridge, but the construction date of 1899 provided by bridge inspection reports seems reasonable. It was renovated in 1951. It was apparently at this time that the arch barrels and inside surfaces of the railings were coated with concrete, greatly detracting from the original design. Another renovation in 1996 removed the concrete from the railings, restoring much of the structure's original appearance.

Urgent Request to the Blue Fairy:
Please Turn These Children Into Stone
by ZEYNEP TOUFE
Fairy tales often have a universal appeal and draw children of all nations into their magical world. Pinocchio is no exception where the Blue Fairy rewards moral behavior and grants a puppet flesh-and-blood status. I do doubt, however, that children in Iraq or Afghanistan could understand why an inanimate, man-made object would ever want to be a child of the flesh and blood kind. In their world, the flesh of children is there for the maiming and the blood for flowing unlike those beautiful, sacrosanct objects of art which must be preserved and doted on. As the British Independent reports, "an international band of curators and historians anxious not to repeat the damage inflicted on Iraqi treasures during the Gulf War 11 years ago are appealing to the American government to take the historic sites into account." (<http://www.commondreams.org/headlines02/1107-04.htm>) It was the 1,400-year-old Buddha statues carved into the mountainside at Bamiyan that triggered the heart-rending cries of concern. The New York Times (03/19/01) reported that Taliban envoy Rahmatullah Hashimi explained that the decision was made after an international NGO offered money to restore the statues but refused to allow the money to be used in refugee camps where 300 children had just died. Hashimi recounted that the NGO was asked that "instead of spending money on statues, why didn't they help our children who are dying of malnutrition?" Upon being told that "this money is only for statues", they decided to destroy them.

    Concerning the Native American
T he following, with minor revisions, is from the pen of the late Rev. Warren Taylor. Rev. Taylor wrote with great care, and his statements may be implicitly relied upon as being as nearly correct as personal observations can make them.
W hen the first white settlers came to Marshall County, they found within its bounds a somewhat numerous branch of the Pottawattomie tribe of Indians. These Indians were divided into bands, the most of which or all of which, by the treaty of 1832, obtained reserves. The largest reserves were those of Aubbeenaubee and Menominee. The Aubbeenaubee Reserve was situated west of the Michigan Road, and in the southern part of the county, extending perhaps into the county of Fulton. The Menominee Reserve embraced a region of country to the southwest of Plymouth, its northeastern corner being near the western border of the town. These two reserves containing twenty or thirty sections each. The two later lay on the east side of Maxinkuckee Lake; the former was situated on the Tippecanoe River, in the southeastern part of the county.
T he Indian bands above mentioned, while living in this region, had several villages. The Aubbeenaubee village was on or near the southern line of the county, and about two miles to the west of the Michigan Road. From three to four miles to the southwest of Plymouth, in the neighborhood of the Twin Lakes, was a settlement of the Menominee band, which contained near one hundred wigwams. Around and among the wigwams were partly cleared fields, from which the Indians raised considerable quantities of corn. This settlement was partly on the north side of the Twin Lakes, and extended over one or two sections. The Benack village was near the Tippecanoe River, and was about five miles south of the town of Bourbon. There was also a village on the Roberts Prairie, and another on the Tabor farm, which was called Pashpo, from its principal chief.

The micrograph shows calcium oxalate crystals in urine. These small crystals can develop to form renal stones. (NASA) Overview
Human exposure to microgravity the unique low-gravity environment inside the International Space Station and other spacecraft results in a number of physiological changes to the human body. Among these changes are alterations in renal function, fluid redistribution, bone loss and muscle atrophy, all of which contribute to an altered urinary environment and the potential for renal stone formation during and immediately after flight.
Previous data have demonstrated that human exposure to microgravity increases the risk of renal (kidney) stone development during and immediately after space flight. In-flight changes previously observed include decreased urine volume and increased urinary excretion of calcium, phosphate, and sodium.
