His doctorate was awarded in 1926 for a thesis entitled Ordinary Linear Homogeneous Differential Equations of Order n and the Related Expansion Problems. In 1925 he had been appointed as an instructor in mathematics at Columbia University, and he spend two years there before being appointed to Harvard as an instructor in 1927. In this latter year he married Emmy Portman; they had three children but eventually the marriage ended in divorce in 1962. During the period that he was an instructor Stone's interests followed very much those of his research supervisor Birkhoff . He published eleven papers on the theory of orthogonal expansions between 1925 and 1928. For example he published An unusual type of expansion problem A comparison of the series of Fourier and Birkhoff Developments in Legendre polynomials (1926), and

The Marshall County Engineer's Office is pleased to make digital images of our Corner Stone Tie records available to the public. This website was originally developed for use in the Engineer's office to access and print digital images of the corner stone record cards maintained by the Engineer's Office. This site is a cooperative effort of several departments, including the Marshall County Engineer, Marshall County Information Services, and the Marshall County Recorder. From it's inception, this application has used Internet technology, such as HTML and the Portable Document Format(PDF) from Adobe, but it was not necessarily developed for publication on the Internet. It is now available on-line as a service to the public, however, certain features that work well in the controlled environment in the Engineer's office may not work as designed in other configurations.

Author Index The Original Affluent Society Marshall Sahlins Hunter-gatherers consume less energy per capita per year than any other group of human beings. Yet when you come to examine it the original affluent society was none other than the hunter's - in which all the people's material wants were easily satisfied. To accept that hunters are affluent is therefore to recognise that the present human condition of man slaving to bridge the gap between his unlimited wants and his insufficient means is a tragedy of modern times. Destutt de Tracy, "fish-blooded bourgeois doctrinaire" though he might have been, at least forced Marx to agree that "in poor nations the people are comfortable", whereas in rich nations, "they are generally poor". Sources of the Misconception "Mere subsistence economy", "limited leisure save in exceptional circumstances", incessant quest for food", "meagre and relatively unreliable" natural resources, "absence of an economic surplus", "maximum energy from a maximum number of people" so runs the fair average anthropological opinion of hunting and gathering

Manuscript Collection Collection Title: Stone (John Marshall) Letter Collection Number: Dates: November 16, 1891 Volume: 1 letter Provenance: Unknown. Letter apparently purchased from Conway Barker, Autograph Dealer; received April 1969. Biographical/Historical Sketch: Stone commanded Company K of the Second Mississippi Infantry which saw action in various Virginia battles until 1862. When a unit reorganization took place, Colonel Stone was placed in command of another regiment. During the later years of the war, he was offered a promotion to major-general but since it would have meant leaving his regiment, he declined it. In early 1865 Stone and his unit were captured and held prisoners in Kentucky, at Camp Chase in Ohio, and at Johnson's Island until the end of the war. Upon his return to private life following the war, Stone was elected to public office-as mayor and treasurer of Tishomingo Co., Mississippi. In 1869 and 1873, Stone was elected to terms in the state senate. When Governor Ames resigned in 1876, John M. Stone, as President Pro Tempore of the Mississippi Senate, succeeded to the governorship. Stone was elected to the governorship in 1877 by a large popular vote. Defeated by Robert Lowery in 1882, Stone was again a candidate for governor in 1889 and served in the office from 1890 to 1896 because of the revision of Mississippi's constitution. Stone was a very popular governor because of his tax cuts, his involvement with railroad development in the state, and his support of the 1890 constitutional convention. He served as governor longer than any other man.

Metuchen Edison History Features Recollections of Boyhood Days In Old Metuchen By David Trumbull Marshall Published by The Case Publishing Co., Flushing NY 1930 (Second Edition)- (c) 1930 The Old Presbyterian Cemetery. The First Presbyterian Church building, 1731 to 1835, stood near where the large white oak tree stands in the old cemetery near the Main Street crossing of the Pennsylvania Railroad. In 1835 the old church was torn down and part of the timbers went to make a house and barn on the J. J. Clarkson place on the north-west corner of Main Street and the Lincoln Highway. That old barn stood until it literally fell to pieces. I remember when the barn did finally collapse, Jimmy Clarkson proudly showed a walking-stick which he had had made from one of the old oak timbers. I was not much impressed at that time. I should like well to own such a relic now. The oldest headstone in the Old Cemetery stands under the old oak. It was placed to mark the grave of John Campbell, who died in 1731, aged 72, and who was said to have been the grandson of the Duke of Argyll. I don't know whether or not he was the grandson of the famous scratching-post Duke or not.
