After attending schools in Dublin and Bristol , he matriculated in at Pembroke College Cambridge , where four years later, on graduating as senior wrangler and first Smith's prizeman, he was elected to a fellowship. This he had to vacate by the statutes of that society when he married in

Sir George Gabriel Stokes "He had the true spirit of a philosopher, more anxious to see science advance than that he should have priority in advancement. Alexander Macfarlane Sir George Gabriel Stokes (1819-1903), born in Ireland, followed Joshua King in the Lucasian Chair. Stokes restored the dignity and integrity of the Chair to the level of its first two professors, Barrow and Newton. Although great men such as Sir George Airy and Charles Babbage held the Chair in the first part of the century, Airy held it for only two years and Babbage for all his achievements, neither resided at Cambridge nor delivered any lectures. Stokes held the Chair for fifty-four years, longer than any other scholar. Stokes came to Cambridge for his undergraduate years in 1837, the year that Queen Victoria took the throne, and never left. Although proficient in several fields, Stokes elected to lecture on optics while holding the Lucasian Chair. Stokes's basic field was physics, but his most important contribution was in fluid mechanics when, in 1845, he described the motion of viscous fluids. These equations are known today as the Navier-Stokes equations, and are considered fundamental equations. Stokes independently discovered the equations twenty years after Claude Navier had arrived at them, but Stokes used continuous flow, not molecular flow, as did Navier, so the credit for the method is shared. As described by his contemporaries, Stokes was modest, dedicated, hard working and religious. Administrative work and teaching slowed his productivity, but he pursued these activities out of a sense of duty. The Royal Society of London benefited for many years from his service as secretary (1854-1885) and president (1885-1890). He guided the publication of their journals

V roce 1832 opustil Skreen a zacal chodit do skoly v Dublinu. V roce 1835 (bylo mu 16 let) odjel do Anglie a zacal studova Bristol College. Nasledne studoval v Cambridge. Navier - Stokesova rovnice.

George Stokes ' father, Gabriel Stokes, was the Protestant minister of the parish of Skreen in County Sligo. His mother was the daughter of a minister of the church so George Stokes's upbringing was a very religious one. He was the youngest of six children and every one of his three older brothers went on to become a priest. As the priest of the church in Cambridge which Stokes later attended wrote (see [14]):- Though he was never narrow in his faith and religious sympathies, he always held fast by the simple evangelical truths he learnt from his father... In [3] the atmosphere in which George grew up is described in words which are more colourful than those which might be used today:- The home-life in the Rectory at Skreen was very happy, and the children grew up in the fresh sea-air with well-knit frames and active minds. Great economy was required to meet the educational needs of the large family... It was not only religious teaching, but a wider introduction to education, which Gabriel Stokes was able to give his children. In particular, having studied at Trinity College Dublin, he was able to teach George Latin grammar. Before going to school George was also taught by the clerk in his father's parish in Skreen. Leaving Skreen in 1832, George attended school in Dublin. He spent three years at the Rev R H Wall's school in Hume Street, Dublin but he was not a boarder at the school, living for these three years with his uncle John Stokes. In fact the family finances would not have allowed him a more expensive education, but at this school [3]:-

George Stokes established the science of hydrodynamics with his law of viscosity (1851), describing the velocity of a small sphere through a viscous fluid. Stokes published papers on the motion of incompressible fluids in 1842-43 and on the friction of fluids in motion and the equilibrium and motion of elastic solids in 1845. In 1849 Stokes was appointed Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge. In 1851 Stokes was elected to the Royal Society and was secretary of the Society from 1854 to 1884 when he was elected president. He investigated the wave theory of light, named and explained the phenomenon of fluorescence in 1852, and in 1854 theorised an explanation of the Fraunhofer lines in the solar spectrum. He suggested these were caused by atoms in the outer layers of the Sun absorbing certain wavelengths. However when Kirchhoff later published this explanation Stokes disclaimed any prior discovery. Stokes developed mathematical techniques for application to physical problems, founded the science of geodesy, and greatly advanced the study of mathematical physics in England. His mathematical and physical papers were published in 5 volumes, the first 3 of which Stokes edited himself in 1880, 1883 and 1891. The last 2 were edited by Sir Joseph Larmor in 1887 and 1891.

Všichni jeho starší bratøi byli knìžími. V roce 1832 odešel studovat do Dublinu.

Foreword In 1978 I received a letter from a great niece in Brisbane asking about the history of the Stokes family. She had been assigned a school project “My Family Tree” so she wrote seeking help in setting out one quarter of her ancestry. In trying to meet this request I soon realized I knew very little about my family. Like most people, I had in my earlier years the opportunity to ask older members of the family about my forebears but neglected to do so. My Stokes grandmother (an Englishwoman) was the only grandparent alive when I was born and she could have given me quite a lot of information but I never asked. My father gave me some details but his knowledge was not extensive. He did tell me that there were a lot of notes in their family bible but it had been lost in disastrous floods in the Brisbane River in 1893 when their house with all its contents was swept away.
