Biography of george stokes (18191903) george gabriel stokes george stokesestablished the science of hydrodynamics with his law of viscosity (1851)
http://physics.rug.ac.be/Fysica/Geschiedenis/Mathematicians/Stokes.html
George Gabriel Stokes
Born: 13 Aug 1819 in Skreen, County Sligo, Ireland
Died: 1 Feb 1903 in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England
George Stokes established the science of hydrodynamics with his law of viscosity (1851), describing the velocity of a small sphere through a viscous fluid. Stokes published papers on the motion of incompressible fluids in 1842-43 and on the friction of fluids in motion and the equilibrium and motion of elastic solids in 1845. In 1849 Stokes was appointed Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge. In 1851 Stokes was elected to the Royal Society and was secretary of the Society from 1854 to 1884 when he was elected president. He investigated the wave theory of light, named and explained the phenomenon of fluorescence in 1852, and in 1854 theorised an explanation of the Fraunhofer lines in the solar spectrum. He suggested these were caused by atoms in the outer layers of the Sun absorbing certain wavelengths. However when Kirchhoff later published this explanation Stokes disclaimed any prior discovery. Stokes developed mathematical techniques for application to physical problems, founded the science of geodesy, and greatly advanced the study of mathematical physics in England. His mathematical and physical papers were published in 5 volumes, the first 3 of which Stokes edited himself in 1880, 1883 and 1891. The last 2 were edited by Sir Joseph Larmor in 1887 and 1891.

V roce 1832 opustil Stokes Skreen a zaèal chodit do školy v Dublinu. V roce 1835 (bylo mu 16 let) odjel Stokes do Anglie a zaèal studova Bristol College. Následnì studoval v Cambridge. V roce 1851 se Stokes stal èlenem Královské spoleènosti. Ve stejném roce publikoval George Gabriel Stokes svùj zákon viskozity.

Gabriel Stokes
His Life, Family and Descendants Gabriel Stokes (1682-1768), was a Mathematical Instrument Maker, Deputy Surveyor General of Ireland and said to be a maker of accurate chronometers. He lived (or operated his business) at Dial, Essex Street, Dublin. His father was a "taylor within the White Lion," Dublin. Gabriel Stokes published a scheme for the supply piped water to Dublin. It was based on hydrostatic balance and he quotes exensively from Issac Newton's work on Hydrostatics. It is also said that he designed Pigeon House Quay, a long mole in Dublin Bay. Here I am starting to collect details of his life Gabriel Stokes is my 5 greats grandfather. Much of the interest in this family is focussed on the works of his great grand son Sir George Gabriel Stokes who was a contemporary of Lord Kelvin and amongst other things was President of the Royal Society. My grandmother remembered her "Uncle George" living in Cambridge around 1900. He was not actually her Uncle but her first cousin twice removed. In March 2003 attended a scientific meeting at the Issac Newton Institute in Cambridge marking the centenary of George Gabriel Stokes death. Pembroke College put on a fine exhibition of the papers associate with mist fellowship and mastership at the College. I was the closest living relative at the meeting, however, I know of closer relatives including direct descendants. Another line from Gabriel Stokes produced several medical professors.

George Stokes was the youngest son of the Rev. Gabriel Stokes, rector of Skreen , County Sligo , where he was born. After attending schools in Dublin and Bristol , he matriculated in at Pembroke College Cambridge , where four years later, on graduating as senior wrangler and first Smith's prizeman, he was elected to a fellowship. This he had to vacate by the statutes of that society when he married in , but twelve years later, under new statutes, he was re-elected. He retained his place on the foundation until , when on the day before his 84th birthday, he was elected to the mastership. He did not enjoy this position for long, for he died at Cambridge on

  • Home About SRI The Stokes Research Institute is named after one of Ireland’s most famous physicists, George Gabriel Stokes (1819-1903), who was born and brought up not far from the University of Limerick. After school in Dublin, Stokes spent his academic career at Cambridge University where he held the Lucasian chair, previously occupied by Isaac Newton, for over 50 years. His fame covered many areas of mathematics and physics. We are particularly proud of his derivation of the equations that describe the flow of fluids – the Navier-Stokes equations (these appear on the top banner of this website). We also use fluorescence, a term he coined, in tagging DNA, Stokes law for the drag on micro-particles and Stokes flows in microchannels. He also investigated wave and diffraction theories of light, concepts which we currently use in optical measurements of temperature, strain and mass diffusion. Finally, he made critical contributions to the understanding of elasticity and wave motion in solids. Stokes Research Institute, University of Limerick, Limerick, Ireland
