James Stirling
Mathematician and surveyor. Born in Garden (Stirling), son of a Jacobite, who had been accused of treason and arrested when James was 17. In 1710, Stirling went to Balliol College (Oxford) possibly after studies in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Following the Jacobite Rising of 1715, Stirling refused to swear allegiance to the Hanoverian throne and thus could not graduate. He continued his research for a brief period in Oxford, before moving to Venice (1717) and then Padua (1721). In 1722, he hurriedly left Italy, to return to Glasgow, because the Italian glass-makers tried to assassinate him as he has discovered their secrets, which he later published as A Description of a Machine to Blow Fire by Fall of Water In 1724, Stirling took a teaching post in London, growing his friendship with Sir Isaac Newton. He corresponded with many other mathematicians, including Euler. In 1726, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. Stirling's main contribution was in the field of calculus, through his treatise Methodus Differentialis Mathematics was clearly not a lucrative occupation because, in 1735, Stirling took the post of manager of a mining company in Leadhills. In 1746, Stirling was considered as the successor to Colin Maclaurin (1698 - 1746) in Edinburgh, but his support for the Jacobites, who had occupied the city the previous year, meant this was politically impossible.

No. 1 Poultry
James Stirling (Stirling Wilford Associates)
Although the building and site were beset with controversy, No.1 Poultry is now viewed as London's post modern flagship. Stirling's design was finalized in 1988 but when he died unexpectedly in 1992, no construction had begun. Michael Wilford, Stirling's partner, completed this monumental work, adhering to the original design. Not only is it a strange shapesometimes called an arc or ship, but its design is playful, post-modern, and eclectic with cladding in pink and beige stone in stripes, with huge cornices and industrial windows, and with a kind of tower/prow with ship-like railings above the clock. Like other post-modern buildings, it also alludes to others structures, most clearly to the Victorian Mappin and Webb building, formerly located on this site. Punched-out triangles, circles and squares highlight the geometries of the building.

The building provides not only office space, but houses restaurants and shops. The Underground station is also located below the building.

Some information about famous persons with the STIRLING surname.
STIRLING, James , known as 'the Venetian' (l692-1770). Scottish mathematician, born in Garden, Stirlingshire. He studied at Glasgow and Oxford (1711-16), but left without graduating. His first book, on Newton's classification of cubic curves, was published in Oxford in 1717. He visited Venice at about this time, returned to Scotland in 1724, and went to London, where he taught mathematics. From 1735 he was superintendent of the lead mines at Leadhills, Lanarkshire, and corresponded with Colin Maclaurin. For his survey of the Clyde in 1752 he was presented with a silver tea-kettle by Glasgow Town Council. His principal mathematical work was Methodus differentailis (1730), in which he made important advances in the theory of infinite series and finite differences, and gave an approximate formula for the factorial function, still in use and named after him.

James Mackison - Stirling

on:
I am trying to trace the family of James Mackison born near Stirling abt 1853.
I know that his father was also called James Mackison. I need perhaps to find him in the 1861 census when he would still have been at home with his family. I think his mother was either Helen or Jean. Any information on the family much appreciated. Thanks Logged apanderson RootsChat Member Offline Posts: 119 Re: James Mackison - Stirling Reply #1 on: Hi Cencuswizard, (I entered 1853 as his date of birth +/- 5 years) Entry No 1:Dwelling: Old Hall Census Place: Gargunnock, Stirling, Scotland

    (Sir) James Stirling
"I ceased to believe in Frank Lloyd Wright's philosophy of "truth to materials" when I saw for the first time a building by Palladio- where the peeling columns were in fact made of bricks- and not of marble or stone, as I had naively assumed from the books. "I believe that the shapes of a building should indicate- perhaps display- the usage the way of life of its occupants, and it is therefore likely to be rich and varied in appearance, and its expression is unlikely to be simple... "We are not much concerned with the imagery of space flight or super-advanced technology, as I think an architect usually has to make do with the technology which is normal and is cost-wise available to him. According to what is appropriate for a particular building problem, the building could, I think, be made of any materials- old or new, traditional of technological- and the whole spectrum of the past, from earth works to plastics, is usable according to the differing economic/climate conditions prevailing in different countries."
