Professional status and research interests
I am teaching mathematical analysis at the university of Amsterdam. My research is in analytic functions of one and several variables. My favourite topics are (small sets in) Pluripotential theory, Hardy spaces and their geometry, function algebras and polynomial convexity, Cauchy- Riemann equations.
Take a look at my list of publications , also available in pdf-format Starting October 1999, (my) Korteweg-de Vries preprints appeared on the Beta Preprint and Publication Server . This is an electronic archive of preprints and publications for institutes participating in the Science and Technology Center of Amsterdam. Just fill in my name and select Korteweg-de Vries institute below the questionaire. You may still download the following older ones directly. There is some overlap with the preprint server. As of 2001, almost all of my preprints are on Math ArXiv . I am quite fond of the UC Davis front end. It should be easy to use, but don't hesitate to ask me for a preprint if you cannot get it from the ArXiv.

AUGUST 18-22 2003,
COPENHAGEN, DENMARK
Background and scope The Seventh International Symposium on Orthogonal Polynomials, Special Functions and Applications follows the European Conferences of Bar-Le-Duc (France, 1984), Segovia (Spain, 1986), Erice (Italy, 1990), Granada (Spain, 1991, VII SPOA), Evian (France, 1992), Delft (Holland, 1994, in honour of Thomas Jan Stieltjes Jr. (1856-1894)), Sevilla (Spain, 1997, VIII SPOA), Patras (Greece, 1999, in honour of Theodore Chihara) and Ostia (Italy, 2001). It covers the field of orthogonal polynomials and special functions and their applications in the other areas of mathematics, physics and other sciences. The Symposium is a forum for presentation and discussion of all aspects of orthogonal polynomials and special functions, ranging from the fundamental to the applied. The aim of the Symposium is to provide a common meeting ground for specialists in orthogonal polynomials, special functions and related topics, such as moment problems, rational approximation, matrix orthogonal polynomials, Sobolev orthogonal polynomials as well as in the rich variety of scientific applications of these objects. The scientific program includes plenary lectures, 30-minutes invited lectures and a session with open problems. In addition each participant is invited to submit an abstract of a talk in parallel session.

    Mathematics Pronunciation Guide
A Megametamathematical Guide, for the Diacritally Challenged, of the Proper American English Pronunciation of Terms and Names This guide includes most mathematicians and mathematical terms that may been encountered in high school and the first two years of college. Proper names are generally pronounced as in the original language.
Some entries are obscure and may be useful only in a game of mathematical trivia, e. g. d'Alembert's
mother, the name of the line in a fraction, or who shot Galois.
I have not had the time to include most definitions or accomplishments. The curious person may try searching the internet for such information. However I have given a few, they are indicated with Move the curser to the symbol and wait a second.
D ates include B.C. or A.D. only if the choice is not obvious from the context.
The Guide is not complete, I will be adding more pronunciations and entries as time permits. (I did not give up my day job.) (The red dates and purple pronunciations are not links.)

    CONTENT
In this course we will discuss various types of information that may be derived from ODEs and PDEs by exploiting their variational structure. Elliptic variational equations arise as stationarity equations of functionals, and we present a variety of techniques for finding stationary points, thereby proving existence of solutions. An important distinction can be made here between local minimizers and saddle points, both in their relevance to other issues and in the methods for finding them. An important class of evolution equations with a variational structure is that of gradient flows. In recent years it has become clear that a large class of evolution equations and systems can be formulated as a gradient flow, by a well-chosen combination of the functional that is to be decreased and the dissipation metric that opposes this decrease. Such a formulation provides an important insight in the energy-dissipation structure of a given system.
