His experiments in hydrostatics showed that the pressure exerted by a liquid is dependent only on its vertical height and not on the shape of the liquid's container, and demonstrated the principle of the hydraulic press. He probably anticipated Galileo's experiments with falling bodies. Stevin is also credited with the introduction of decimals into common usage. Simon Stevin (1548-1620), the Flemish mathematician and engineer, was born in Bruges and initiated the science of hydrostatics by demonstrating that the pressure exerted by a liquid upon a given surface depends on the height of the liquid and the area of the surface. While quartermaster in the army, Stevin invented a way of flooding the lowlands in the path of invading forces by opening selected sluices in dikes. The author of 11 books, he contributed significantly to the sciences of trigonometry, geography, fortification, and navigation and devised and urged the universal use of decimal fractions and decimal systems of coins, weights, and measures.

A.D. Fokker: Simon Stevin's views on music
The following is the introduction to Vande spiegheling der singconst ("On the theory of the art of singing") in Principal Works of Simon Stevin vol. 5, A.D. Fokker (ed.), Amsterdam, 1955-1966, pp. 413-464. Klik hier voor de originele Nederlandse tekst (website Ad Davidse). Click here for the annotated English translation INTRODUCTION Simon Stevin for some time seems to have contemplated writing a treatise on music. If ever he accomplished this design, the work must obviously have been lost. Only some fragments were discovered in 1884 by D. Bierens de Haan in a collection of miscellaneous manuscripts, which belonged to Constantijn Huygens (1596-1687), the well-known secretary to the Princes of Orange, who, at the same time, was a gifted poet and musician. (Cf. this edition, Vol. I, p. 33, work XV). This collection, now in the possession of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen at Amsterdam, is preserved at the Koninklijke Bibliotheek at The Hague, The Netherlands. Stevin often divided his books into a main part, containing the established doctrine, and an appendix dealing with controversial matters, in order "not to obscure the instruction by dispute", as he says. Accordingly we find two main parts, or sketches thereof, and two appendices. Neither of these treatises is complete, and in the plan they show an appreciable difference in the stress laid on certain points. One draft is in Stevin's own handwriting. It dwells rather more upon discussions than the other. This part will be reproduced hereafter. The other draft, which has been copied as if in preparation for print, indulges rather more in elementary definitions. It shows some gaps, presumably to be filled up later.

Simon Stevin(15481620) was a Dutch engineer. He was a contemporary of Galileï (1564-1642). Unlike the latter he had no time for public relations he was

Simon Stevin
Simon Stevin He was not only theoretically envolved with the scientific problems of his time, but also practically. He was the mathematics and mechanics teacher of Prince Maurits and he was an expert in the art of fortification (those who know our local history can learn from this why Prince Maurits could be so successful in fighting the Spanish armies), he developed the teaching program of a new school for enginieers in Leiden, he worked on an improved concept for mills, he wrote about the art of navigation, etc.. For short: he knew about everything which made our nation great in that time (and attractive for tourists now).
He argued that to make science useful it was not only necessary that all publications were written in the native language (therefore, he invented Dutch words for all scientific and mathematical terms known to him - most of which are still in use), but that it should also be simplified as much as possible. For instance, he was an ardent advocate of the use of decimal fractions and of the decimal system for coins, measures and weights.
One of his most famous reasonings, of which he was quite proud himself, was the proof that in an equilibrium situation on an inclined plane the weights of the bodies involved are proportional with the lengths of the planes. Nowadays we prove that using the sines of the angles that the planes make with the horizontal plane, and we decompose the weights of the bodies in forces parallel and perpendicular to the inclined planes. Stevin used an ingenious geometrical argument. He considered the following picture:

Executive summary: Founder of hydrostatics His claims to fame are varied. His contemporaries were most struck by his invention of a carriage with sails, a little model of which was preserved at Scheveningen until 1802. The carriage itself had been lost long before; but we know that about the year 1600 Stevinus, with Prince Maurice of Orange and twenty-six others, made use of it on the seashore between Scheveningen and Petten, that it was propelled solely by the force of the wind, and that it acquired a speed which exceeded that of horses. Another idea of Stevinus, for which even Hugo Grotius gave him great credit, was his notion of a bygone age of wisdom. The goal to be aimed at is the bringing about of a second age of wisdom, in which mankind shall have recovered all its early knowledge. The fellow-countrymen of Stevinus were proud that he wrote in their own dialect, which he thought fitted for a universal language, as no other abounded like Dutch in monosyllabic radical words. Book-keeping by double entry may have been known to Stevinus as clerk at Antwerp either practically or through the medium of the works of Italian authors like Lucas Paccioli and Girolamo Cardano. He, however, was the first to recommend the use of impersonal accounts in the national household. He practiced it for Prince Maurice, and recommended it to Sully, the French statesman.
