http://www.merzbaureconstruction.com/reconstruction_e.htm
The Reconstruction
Original photographs taken in 1932/33 Kurt Schwitters The axes of the three photographs are positioned at an angle of between 80 and 100 degrees; certain elements of the pictures are found in two out of three shots, and one (single) corner appears in all three. This was enough to provide the basis for a three-dimensional reconstruction.
To give an idea of the time invested:
from 1981 we had one year for reflection, research and drawing , and half a year to translate this into three dimensions.
The reconstruction was achieved in close cooperation with Ernst Schwitters , the son of Kurt Schwitters, who had witnessed the growth of the MERZ Building as a child.
With total proportions of 460 x 580 x 393 cm, each point within the MERZ Building is bound into of a system of coordinates based on the lower corner of the room diagonally opposite the door, thus giving an exact measurement. The precision of the reconstruction of the MERZ Building is proven by photographs taken today from the same perspective points and under the same optical conditions. Back

The artist's problem lies in a conflict - to present oneself, then to draw back, to be seen and to remain invisible. Aaron Ronald Bodenheimer
In 1919 Kurt Schwitters' bourgeois self had lighted on an advertisement for the Kommerz- und Privatbank. His artistic self had selected a single syllable for an element in a picture and thus created Merz, an art of materials that moved in its own unmaterialistic world. In financial terms Merz was a disaster, yet parsimonious as he was, Schwitters remained faithful to his creation. The ultimate outcome of Merz was the now legendary Merzbau, one of the most unsaleable objects in the history of art. Freud maintained that the goals of the artist (naturally understood to be male) are fame, money and the love of women. If that is the case, then the Merzbau is a wry monument to Schwitters' vain pursuit of all three. Although it was one of his greatest and most original works, it brought him neither fame - its existence was rarely made public - nor fortune - it was an expensive undertaking - nor, presumably, a satisfactory love life, one of its main components being christened The Cathedral of Erotic Misery.

information service Description:
The Goettingen SUB has a holding of about 350 literary remains, i.e., the papers left after a scholar's death. A special emphasis in the Goettingen collection is mathematics and the natural sciences. Care and development of the remains has from inception been emphasized, so that the users' interests are clearly focused on the newer manuscripts and remains here. The collecting, completing, and indexing of the scholars' literary remains are the responsibility of the Manuscripts and Rare Prints Department, which is located in the historical library building. A marked growth in the mathematical remains has taken place since the beginning of the 1990s, after the library set as a goal the collecting and indexing of this material upon making a contract for such with the Deutsche Mathematiker-Vereinigung (the German National Mathematical Society). Some of the partial remains that the library has collected since 1992 include those of Ernst Steinitz, Ludwig Bieberbach, Wilhelm Maier, Carl Ludwig Siegel, and Ludwig Kiepert. In addition, with the support of the DFG, the extensive scholarly remains of Hans Zassenhaus were obtained from the U.S. The cataloging of the mathematical remains has been financially supported by the Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Goettingen since 1992. The cataloging software used since 1997 is HANS (

When asked for one outstanding book from which to begin learning about polyhedra, I recommend one of these:
    • W.W.R. Ball / H.S.M. Coxeter, Mathematical Recreations and Essays. (one great polyhedra section) H.S.M. Coxeter, Regular Polytopes. (excellent, college level) Peter R. Cromwell, Polyhedra. (very comprehensive) George W. Hart and Henri Picciotto, Zome Geometry. (Hands-on models throughout) (more information) H. Martyn Cundy and A.P. Rollett, Mathematical Models , (one great polyhedra section) Alan Holden, Shapes, Spaces and Symmetry. (very visual) Peter Pearce, Structure in Nature is a Strategy for Design . (outstanding) Magnus Wenninger, Polyhedron Models . (most comprehensive instructions for paper models)

Emil Artin
Nacido el
03 de marzo de 1898,
en
Viena, Austria,
Fallecido el
20 de diciembre de 1962,
en
Hamburgo, Alemania.
