THE STEINITZ PAPERS, subtitled Letters and Documents of the First World Chess Champion, is more than just letters written by Steinitz during different times of his life, including the tragic death of his daughter and during his stay in a mental institution in Moscow. These alone would make the book fascinating reading, but equally interesting are the letters to Steinitz where such well-known figures as Henry Nelson Pillsbury and Walter Penn Shipley and Emanuel Lasker are represented.
THE STEINITZ PAPERS is primarily a book to be read, but there is chess in it. All the games of the Schiffers-Steinitz match are presented with annotations by Steinitz and Andy Soltis.

Occasionally a mathematical fact is so significant that the results it leads to give insights which range widely over a large area of mathematics and its applications. This is true of Euler's seminal polyhedral formula . Not only did the result lead to deep work in topology, algebraic topology, and the theory of surfaces in the 19th and 20th centuries, but the result has also had great significance for combinatorics, graph theory, computational geometry, and other parts of mathematics. This research continues to be actively pursued today. So much power from just the simple relationship: Vertices + Faces - Edges = 2.
    2. Euler relations

Using Euler's polyhedral formula for convex 3-dimensional polyhedra, V (Vertices) + F (Faces) - E (Edges) = 2, one can derive some additional theorems that are useful in obtaining insights into other kinds of polyhedra and into plane graphs. A plane graph is a diagram consisting of dots ( vertices ) and line segments ( edges ) which can be drawn in the plane so that the line segments meet only at vertices. (More on graphs can be found

It's coming to the end of the calendar year and a lot of people are producing lists. What were the 10 largest box-office blockbusters? What were the 10 best movies of the year? Who are the 10 best dressed men and 10 worst dressed women? One can also construct more grandiose lists. Who were the 10 best pitchers of all time or what were the 10 greatest movies? What appears on a list constructed by the same person can change dramatically with slight wording changes. Thus, the list of my 10 favorite movies might not coincide with my list of the 10 greatest movies ever made. Does it make sense to construct lists related to mathematics? What about a list of the 10 greatest mathematicians? 10 greatest women mathematicians? The 10 most influential theorems? The 10 niftiest theorems? Leonard Euler On the one hand constructing lists is perhaps silly. How can one make a list of the 10 greatest composers of classical music? Must I leave Tchaikovsky out to include Mahler or Handel? Yet, from another perspective constructing lists of this kind makes one think about a wide variety of value-laden issues. What makes a composer great? Should a composer of a few great pieces be put on a short list of greats while another composer who perhaps composed nothing that rose to the heights of the first person, yet composed 100 times as many pieces at a very high level of inspiration, is omitted? This being the first of my last two columns as solo editor of the Feature Column, perhaps readers will indulge me if I write two columns about a theorem which would make both my list of 10 favorite theorems and my list of 10 most influential theorems. This theorem involves

Dr G A Johnston Merz Lives On Kurt Schwitters at the Armitt ... Wood on Wood Kurt Schwitters is now recognised as a 20th-century master, best known for his abstract art of Merz, developed in Germany between the wars. But he spent his last years in the Lake District, a poor, sick, virtually unknown refugee. ‘We keep right on playing until death comes for us,” Schwitters once said. “I have so little time.” Report by William Feaver for The Sunday Times Magazine (August 18 1974) As a rule the annual Lakeland Artists’ Exhibition at Grasmere is hardly surprising. However, in the summer of 1947 the peace of the prevailing landscapes was disturbed by two collages, strange objects made from litter, scraps, debris: absolute rubbish. One had half a ball stuck to it. Both were initialled KS. They failed to sell. KS, a German refugee who had arrived in the Lake District a couple of years before, might have had better luck with the plashy views he was in the habit of laying out for sale on the steps of the Bridge House, Ambleside’s most picturesque spot. Or there were his portraits of local personalities, Dr Johnson for instance, Harry Bickerstaff the schoolteacher and Frank O’Neill of the Central Cafe.

I n a short amount of time Frankl shot down several enemy planes, and soon afterwards his picture was featured on German postcards and he was hailed as a national hero. Frankl received the Pour-le-mérite (nicknamed the "Blue Max"), which was Germany's equivalent to America's Medal of Honor. He was made commander of his own squadron, Jasta F rankl was killed on April 8, 1917, when the Albatros D.III he was flying fell apart during combat over France. Just three days before he had shot down three enemy aircraft in one day, for a total of 19. He was buried in Berlin-Charlottenburg, but his grave has been lost to war and history. Frankl was excluded from Pour-le-mérite Flieger , Walter Zuerl's 1938 chronicle of German World War I fighter pilots who had received the Pour-le-mérite . In spite of his conversion, Frankl apparently was, in Nazi eyes, still a Jew.
