Boltzmann treated a certain ideal heat engine with the light as a working matter instead of the gas. This law is the only physical law of nature named after a Slovene physicist . The law is valid only for ideal black objects, the perfect radiators, called blackbodies. Stefan published this law on March 20 in the article œber die Beziehung zwischen der W¤rmestrahlung und der Temperatur On the relationship between thermal radiation and temperature ) in the Bulletins from the sessions of the Vienna Academy of Sciences.

Ludwig Boltzmann
Born: 20 Feb 1844 in Vienna, Austria
Died: 5 Oct 1906 in Duino (near Trieste), Austria (now Italy)
Ludwig Boltzmann 's father was a taxation official. Boltzmann was awarded a doctorate from the University of Vienna in 1866 for a thesis on the kinetic theory of gases supervised by Josef Stefan. After obtaining his doctorate, he became an assistant to his teacher Josef Stefan. Boltzmann taught at Graz, moved to Heidelberg and then to Berlin. In these places he studied under Bunsen, Kirchhoff and Helmholtz. In 1869 Boltzmann was appointed to a chair of theoretical physics at Graz. He held this post for four years then, in 1873, he accepted the chair of mathematics at Vienna. He did not stay very long in any place and after three years he was back in Graz, this time in the chair of experimental physics. Boltzmann, at least half jokingly, used to say that the reason he moved around so much was that he was born during the dying hours of a Mardi Gras ball. It was only half joking since he did feel that his nature made him subject to rapid swings between happiness and sadness. His personality certainly had a major impact on the direction that his career took and personal relationships, where he was always very soft-hearted, played a big part. He suffered from an alternation of depressed moods with elevated, expansive or irritable moods. Indeed his physical appearance, being short and stout with curly hair, seemed to fit his personality. His fiancée called him her "sweet fat darling".

Josef Stefan
Austrian Physicist, Josef Stefan was born on March 24, 1835, near Klagenfurt, Austria. During his lifetime, his contributions spanned several important fields, including: the Kinetic Theory of Gases, Hydrodynamics and in particular, Radiation. Stefan was educated at the University of Wien, received his Doctor of Philosophy in 1858 and became Privatdozent in Mathematical Physics. In 1863, he became Professor Ordinarius of Physics and in 1866 Director of the Physical Institute. He was a distinguished member of the Academy of Sciences where he was appointed Secretary in 1875. Before Stefan's work, G. R. Kirchhoff had already described the perfect radiator as the "perfect black body," namely, one that absorbed all the radiation that fell on it and reflected none, but emitted radiation of all wave lengths. Stefan showed empirically in 1879 that the radiation of such a body was proportional to the fourth power of its absolute temperatures. This relationship became known as the "Stefan-Boltzmann Law " after it had been deduced by L. Boltzmann in 1884 from thermodynamic considerations. In the year 1891, Stefan published his work on the formation of ice in the Polar Seas, giving a special solution of this non-linear conduction problem with phase change (the more general solution being due to F. Neumann). He died January 7, 1893 in Wien.

I think that every great artist has to have that ability to gamble, to take a chance, to stay out there on the edge and open new frontiers. Josef would try; sometimes he would miss; and sometimes he would crash and burn; other times he was just unforgettable. But he was always there again, to try once more, and I think that was part of his greatness in my estimation. Bert Turetzky Lux Feininger, artist and son of the famous Bauhaus artist Lyonel Feininger, wrote to us about the firm of McGinnis & Marx: "To tell of the early times of Josef Marx and his friends is to breathe again a richly hopeful air of my past... His publishing company of McGinnis & Marx changed its address repeatedly but never faltered in doing battle for the underdog. From Hell's Kitchen it had moved by the late forties to Waverly Place, which seemed hopeful. But it was not so for long: in 1949 we see Joe Marx in a lowly dwelling at 408 Second Ave., trying to pick up the pieces, not of his publishing enterprise but of his home life. The marriage with "McGinnis" had collapsed, although the firm somewhat mysteriously survived under the old masthead. Why would an oboist working hard hours in the pit of the Metropolitan Opera be destined to start a publishing company? To our surprise we began to accumulate a great deal of information which showed Josef to be most unusual among oboe players.

Josef Loschmidt, a pioneer of 19th-century physics and chemistry, deserves to be better known in the English-speaking world. Born 15 March 1821 in Putschirn (now Pocerny), a small village in what is now the Czech Republic, Loschmidt was the son of a poor Bohemian farmer. In his first publication, in 1861, Loschmidt proposed the first structural chemical formulae for many important molecules, introducing markings for double and triple carbon bonds. Figure 1 That prescient paper was ignored by the chemical establishment. But four years later, while he was still teaching in a secondary school at age 44, Loschmidt solved one of the most long-standing and difficult problems of the age: He became the first person to use the kinetic theory of gases to obtain a reasonably good value for the diameter of a molecule. This was at a time when the kinetic theory and indeed the very existence of molecules were still quite hypothetical.

Sound Commentary on Current Events in Seattle, Puget Sound and Washington State Main June 06, 2005 Josef Stalin 1, Common Sense Back home from Wenatchee. A disappointing decision to say the least. As I wrote this morning: Will Judge Bridges side with common sense and rule that election officials can't just keep counting ballots again and again and get different numbers every time without also showing that every ballot has a voter and every voter a ballot? Or will he side with the Democrats and Josef Stalin and rule that he who counts the votes makes the rules and doesn't have to obey any laws? We now know the answer to that question. I have to dash off my column for The Stranger tonight. I'll have more commentary later. The punchline: the two things that are most broken and in need of overhaul are: King County Elections and the contest statute itself. Plus, I'll also post quotes from my post-ruling conversations with Paul Berendt, Nixon Handy, and attorneys for both the Republicans and Democrats! In the meantime, Dino Rossi's press conference will be streamed live on

Famous Chemists Josef Stefan Josef Stefan was born to Slovenian parents in Austria. He graduated in mathematics and physics at the University of Vienna and was appointed lecturer in mathematical physics in 1858 and became a professor there in 1866. He showed empirically, in 1879, that total radiation from a blackbody is proportional to the fourth of its absolute temperature. Boltzmann, one of his students, showed in 1884 that the Stefan-Boltzmann law could be demonstrated mathematically. Stefan then applied it to determine the approximate temperature of the surface of the Sun. He also did important work on heat conduction in fluids and the kinetic theory of heat. Back To Main Page
