60 years : 16 May 1997
David Epstein, with Christopher Zeeman, founded the University of Warwick Mathematics Department in 1964. Initially appointed as Reader, he was promoted to Professor in 1969 and has played a leading role in the successful development of this internationally famous department. Nothing could be a better tribute to David's many contributions to mathematics, and above all to his and Rona's warm and close relations with, and help to, many many members of the mathematics community over the years, than the overwhelming response to our invitation to his 60th birthday celebration conference in May 1997. The conference was attended by over 100 people from 16 countries, almost all of whom had close personal or research ties with David. We hope that this volume gives some impression of the range of his present interests and we are honoured to dedicate it to David.

B Y B OB N ELSON Samuel Eilenberg. He then worked with Henri Cartan to further develop these ideas and founded an area still very much in use today called homological algebra. His longest-running collaboration was with Saunders MacLane. Together they studied a variety of topics in algebraic topology and invented category theory, ubiquitous in modern mathematics. Eilenberg became interested in art collecting on a trip to Bombay in the mid-1950s and pursued Asian art partly to relieve his mind of the rigors of math, Polsky said. Eilenberg is survived by several cousins. A Columbia memorial service is being planned.

55: Algebraic topology
Introduction
Algebraic topology is the study of algebraic objects attached to topological spaces; the algebraic invariants reflect some of the topological structure of the spaces. The use of these algebraic tools calls attention to some types of topological spaces which are well modeled by the algebra; fiber bundles and related spaces are included here, while complexes (CW-, simplicial-, ...) are treated in section 57. Finally, the use of the algebraic tools also calls attention to the aspects of a topological space which are well modeled by the algebra; this gives rise to homotopy theory. The algebraic tools used in topology include various (co)homology theories, homotopy groups, and groups of maps. These in turn have necessitated the development of more complex algebraic tools such as derived functors and spectral sequences; the machinery (mostly derived from homological algebra) is powerful if rather daunting. In all cases, the "naturality" of the construction implies that a map between spaces induces a map between the groups. Thus one can show that no maps of some sort can exist between two spaces (e.g. homeomorphisms) since no corresponding group homomorphisms can exists. That is, the groups and homomorphisms offer an algebraic "obstruction" to the existence of maps. Classic applications include the nonexistence of retractions of disks to their boundary and, as a consequence, the Brouwer Fixed-Point Theorem. (Obstruction theory is, more generally, the creation of algebraic invariants whose vanishing is necessary for the existence of certain topological maps. For example a function defined on a subspace Y of a space X defines an element of a homology group; that element is zero iff the function may be extended to all of X.)

A Writer's Bookshelf
There are a number of tools that can be of great help as you compose, edit, and revise your prose. Although some are available in electronic formats, most writers find the traditional print formats more useful. These tools should never be more than an arm's length away from your deskcertainly not several web links awayso that you can use them without hesitation whenever a question about form or meaning occurs to you. If such books are not part of your personal reference library, you will not use them nearly as often as you should.
Dictionaries
A dictionary is not the same as a spell-checker. When you read, a dictionary is the place to discover the meanings of unknown words; when you write, it is a tool for distinguishing among the nuances of words you already know. A dictionary can tell you many things about a word: its spelling, its pronunciation, its different meanings, even its history. Some of the best dictionaries illustrate such information with examples of proper usage, including special idioms that determine how a particular word will combine with prepositions and other parts of speech. One especially useful tool, the Oxford English Dictionary (commonly abbreviated OED ) attempts to illustrate the entire history of every word in the English language with quotations that exemplify each word's changing usage. By reading dictionary entries carefully, you can learn an enormous amount about the rich textures of sound, meaning, and nuance that English has bequeathed us.
