Sripati was a follower of the teaching of Lalla writing on astrology, astronomy and mathematics. His mathematical work was undertaken with applications to astronomy in mind, for example a study of spheres. His work on astronomy was undertaken to provide a basis for his astrology. Sripati was the most prominent Indian mathematicians of the 11 th Century. Among Sripati's works are: Dhikotidakarana written in 1039, a work of twenty verses on solar and lunar eclipses; Dhruvamanasa written in 1056, a work of 105 verses on calculating planetary longitudes, eclipses and planetary transits Siddhantasekhara a major work on astronomy in 19 chapters; and Ganitatilaka an incomplete arithmetical treatise in 125 verses based on a work by Sridhara The titles of Chapters 13, 14, and 15 of the

Canaday Center, University of Toledo. Dr. Sripati Chandrasekhar Editor, Population Review Dr. S. Chandrasekhar, leading demographer and former Union Minister for Health and Family Planning, died at San Diego, United States, on June 14. A pioneering family planning advocate in the area of public policy, he was the author of over 40 books and was working on a book till he suffered a stroke and was hospitalized three months ago. He is survived by his wife Anne, and three daughters, Radha, Prema and Sheila. After completing his M.Sc. from Columbia University and his Ph.D. in demography in New York University, Dr. Chandrasekhar became professor of Economics at Annamalai University, where he later served as Vice-Chancellor. He started the Indian Institute of Population Studies, and edited the academic journal, `Population Review', for over 40 years. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1964 and in 1967 he was appointed Minister for Health and Family Planning in the Government of Indira Gandhi. He came to be known for his crusading zeal for family planning and population control.

Politics Political Big Wigs Sripati Mishra By : Dilip Awasthi Congress preferred yet another humdrum politician - Sripati Misra, as Singh's alternative. His two-year rule proved as innocuous as the man himself. Elected to the Vidhan Sabha in 1962 for the first time, he was made deputy speaker of the house in 1967. He crossed over to Charan Singh's Bhartiya Kranti Dal (BKD) and was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1969. Charan Singh inducted him as a cabinet minister and he was nominted to the Vidhan Parishad in 1970. He joined the Congress again in 1971. He was elected as Congress MLA in 1980 and was elected unopposed as the speaker of the U.P. assembly on July 7. Born on January 20, 1924 in Shekhupur village of Jaunpur, Misra studied in Varanasi and Lucknow to complete his MA, LLB. He was appointed a judicial magistrate in 1954 and worked in the same capacity till 1958 after which he joined politics. Misra was literally trembling when a couple of journalists informed him that he was to be the next chief minister of U.P. His regime had controversies all around right from mal-administration, increase in corruption and casteism. Whenever under pressure from the detractors, Misra used to point to his old night-gown, " This (CM's position) was the maximum I could ever think off. I treat it like this gown which I take off each night without feeling a pinch". A virtual revolt by Congress MLAs sealed Misra's fate.
