(on William McCarthy and Julia David, The Evolution of Enterprise Information Systems From Sticks and Jars Past Journals and Ledgers Toward Interorganizational Webs of Business Objects and Beyond
(Please first read my Introduction to these comments on your papers.) Your setting of the scene What a magnificently comprehensive yet beautifully concise opening sentence! :- The semantic distance between the reality of a business enterprise and its implemented model its information system has slowly decreased as measurement techniques, representation models, and computer technology have progressed. In our world of "penetrating computerization" into which we are being pushed [3(firstly), 12], we must rather proactively work to reduce that distance, so there you have most usefully put your finger on a key cutting-edge of progress towards what I called "profound congeniality" - as against mere "user-friendliness" - that we must be working towards (See [Jeff] and find "congenial" in my faq). More than we often appreciate, we are creating the environment (Find "Zemanek" in my faq) in which people will "live, move and have their being". See also my comments above à propos Mark Baker’s paper, on the increasing identification of UI objects with real entities. Your sentence also nicely circumscribes the epistemological justifications for MACK.

William Spottiswoode (1825-1883)
After graduating William Spottiswoode took over the family printing house, but continued to take an active interest in mathematics and physics. His main contributions were to geometry, optics, and electricity (particularly electrical discharge in rarified gases), but an 1861 paper On typical mountain ranges: an application of the calculus of probabilities to physical geography , which attempted to use statistical methods to distinguish between competing geological theories, was apparently the inspiration for Francis Galton's work on statistics. Spottiswoode was also renowned for his interest in linguistics and oriental languages. He became President of the Royal Society in 1878 and still held that office at the time of his death in 1883. Further information about Spottiswoode
Henry John Stephen Smith (1826-1883)
Henry Smith was one of the most influential British pure mathematicians of the second half of the nineteenth century. He won the major mathematical prizes of both the German and French Academies of Sciences. He was elected Savilian Professor of Geometry in 1861, and became Keeper of the University Museum in 1874. Smith graduated with First Class Honours in both Classics and Mathematics after less than two years at the college, and won the major University Prizes in both subjects. He was also President of the Oxford Union. In 1849 the College appointed him its Mathematics Lecturer but also asked him to set up and run the first college chemistry teaching laboratory in Oxford, for which task he equipped himself by studying in Oxford with Neville Story-Maskelyne and at the Royal College of Chemistry with August Hofmann.

Oliver Heaviside (1850-1925) Oliver Heaviside was born in Camden Town, London on 18 May 1850, the youngest of four sons born to Thomas Heaviside and his wife Rachel West, whose sister Emma had married Sir Charles Wheatstone in 1847. Thomas Heaviside was a wood engraver and his wife was a governess and had taught the Spottiswoode family, including Sir William Spottiswoode who became President of the Royal Society. However, the family were very poor and the poverty of those early years had a lasting influence on Oliver. His education began at a girls' school run by his mother, but when this failed he was taught by Mr F R Cheshire at the Camden House School. He did not go to university but became a telegraph clerk for the Anglo Danish Telegraph Company, later the Great Northern Telegraph Company, in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1868. In 1874 he retired from work due to increasing deafness. He then began work on a series of problems in telegraphy and signal transmission using experimentation, mathematics and vector analysis. He worked on Maxwell's equations concerning the electromagnetic theory of light. He predicted the existence of an ionised relfective layer in the atmosphere which would bounce radio signals back to earth - the ionosphere - which is known as the Heaviside layer in his honour, and also predicted the existence of sub-atomic particles and the idea that the mass of an electric charge increases with its velocity.
