At Harrow he obtained in 1842 a Lyon scholarship, and at Oxford in 1845 a first-class in mathematics, in 1846 the junior and in 1847 the senior university mathematical scholarship.
In 1846 he left Oxford to take his fathers place in the business, in which he was engaged until his death. In 1847 he issued five pamphlets entitled

Below is a list of people who had an influence on the life of Charles Darwin. While this is not an exhaustive list, it does cover all of those who had a major influence on his life. Please note that is list does not include family members. They will be discussed on a forthcoming page. Agassiz, Jean Louis
    Babbage, Charles

    Beaufort, Capt. Francis

    Bradlaugh, Charles
    ...
    Wilberforce, Bishop Sam

    Agassiz, Jean Louis [1807 - 1873]

Agassiz was a Swiss born geologist and zoologist. He emigrated to the United States in 1846 and was a professor of natural history at Harvard University from 1847-73. He developed the novel theory that a previous ice age once engulfed the entire surface of the earth and supposedly this ice age separated the two "creation events" of god. Determined to prove himself right, Agassiz spent time in the Amazon Basin trying to find proof that glaciers were once there. He was not successful.
    Influence
Charles Darwin and Louis Agassiz started a correspondence in the mid-1840's and soon became good friends. When Darwin was thinking about starting a comprehensive study of barnacles in 1846, Agassiz wrote to Darwin that such research was in great demand and he should by all means pursue it. Indeed, when Agassiz heard that Darwin was looking for different varieties of barnacles to study he sent him a huge crate full of specimens. When "Origin of Species" was published in 1859, Darwin sent Agassiz a complimentary 1st edition. Agassiz was not very impressed with Darwin's theory of natural selection, being convinced rather that each species was a separate divine creation ordained by god. During the late 1800's Agassiz became one of the most influential opponents of evolutionary theory in the United States.

H.M.S. Beagle dropped anchor at the Cocos Islands in the Indian ocean. Darwin explored some of the islands and was impressed with the myriad of coconut trees, although hardly anything else existed on these islands. The islands were composed entirely of coral and Darwin surmised that they were once part of a large submerged coral reef. Despite the relative desolate state of the islands he did manage to collect several plants, a few small birds, one species of lizard, several species of insects, and a lot of coral. April 03 1832
The Beagle dropped anchor at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the crew received its first mail from England. Darwin learned that his former girlfriend, Fanny Owen, was now married (last May) to a wealthy politician named Robert Biddulph. During the time at Rio, Darwin went off exploring in the tropical forest with Patrick Lennon, a local English merchant. They were away for eighteen days on a 150 mile trek inland to Rio Macao where Darwin witnessed more brutal treatment of blacks. April 10 1835
Darwin was back on the coast at the town of Santiago. A few days later he returned to Valparaiso and stayed at Mr. Corfield's house where he worked on another expedition north along the coast.

Biography: Sir William Heneage Ogilvie was born to British parents in Valparaiso, Chile, but received his education at Oxford University, England. Ogilvie served as a surgeon during the Balkan war of 1912-1913 as well as during both World Wars, and thus took a special interest in war surgery. During World War II he was a Consulting Surgeon East Africa Command 1940-1942, 1942-1944 Consulting Surgeon Middle East Land Forces, and 1944-1945 Consulting Surgeon Eastern Command. William Spottiswoode
William Spottiswoode, President of the Royal Society, was born in London, Jan. 11, 1825. He belongs to an ancient Scottish family, many members of which have risen to distinction in Scotland and also in the New World.
In 1845 he took a first class in mathematics, and he afterward won the junior (1846) and the senior (1847) university mathematical scholarships. He returned to Oxford for a term or two, and gave a course of lectures in Balliol College on Geometry of Three Dimensions—a favorite subject of his. He was examiner in the mathematical schools in 1857-58. On leaving Oxford, he immediately, we believe, took an active part in the working management of the business of the Queen's printers, about this time resigned to him by his father, Andrew Spottiswoode, brother of the Laird of Spottiswoode. The business has largely developed under his hands.
Other subjects than mathematics have occupied his attention: at an early age he studied languages, as well Oriental as European.
