William Guthrie Spence: Nation Builder, Labour Leader, Worker
Bill Shorten - 01 October 2003
This is Bill Shorten's speech given at the opening of the new AWU Office in Melbourne. The building was named after William Guthrie Spence, the founding father of the AWU. Thankyou everyone who was able to attend today especially the members of our National Executive and Secretaries of our branches from across the country. We are also honoured by the presence of Premier Bracks and former ACTU secretary Bill Kelty, both are true friends of the AWU. I would also like to extend a warm welcome to the many other friends of the AWU from likeminded unions and labour movement as a whole. Today is a proud moment for our union, today we open a first class facility to house the National headquaters of the AWU along with the Victorian Branch. Today we also honor the founding father of not only our union, but unionism as a whole in this nation. I would like to take this opportunity to go through a little of the history of our union and the the man who founded it William Guthrie Spence. On the 14th of June 1886 several shearers meet in one of the back rooms of Fern's Hotel in Ballarat. The meeting was convened by a 24 year old shearer called David Temple who had refused to accept a cut in shearing rates. The purpose of the meeting was to form an organisation to combat the wealthy pastoralists who were arbitrarily cutting the shearing rates across the country. An organisation was formed at that meeting, the Australasian Shearers' Union was its name and, although the participants were unaware of it at the time, that organisation which has now been in existence for 117 years would radically change the face of Australia.

Interior Trim
by William P. Spence Sterling Publishing: 2004
paperback, 208 pp., $17.95
ISBN 0-8069-9297-2
For all manner of interior trim work, Spence's new book is an excellent presentation on what is available, techniques of use and methods of installation. Stair skirt boards and scarf-jointed base boards, window casings, chair railings, and crown moldings are only some of the subjects covered. There are detailed explanations of the various tools used, as well as repairing miscut miters, shimming all kinds of trim and planning for electrical and heating considerations.
Full color photos show finished examples of completed rooms, with discussion of trim selection as it effects color schemes. The author lists characteristics of both softwood and harwood trim as to their grain, hardness, paint holding ability and staining quality. He also shows a page of seventeen common American trim woods in flatsawn, quartersawn and end grain colorations.
A wide selection of stock moldings are illustrated on three full pages, with an entire chapter on making your own moldings on the router table or shaper. He mentions tablesaw molding heads, but advises against using them, and for those doing a great deal of molding, he illustrates use of a planer/molder.
One great advantage of this book is being able to see for example, how built up crown molding dominates a room and what it will look like when you are finished with the installation. Whether your next project is an all wood, walnut paneled library, or installing flat ceiling molding to a rental house, this book can guide you through the process and present many alternatives and fixes.

Lawskills.com Georgia Caselaw SPENCE et al. v. HAMM et al. 226 Ga. App. 357 Judge Harold R. Banke. Contract to make will. Dougherty Superior Court. Before Judge Gray. William Spence, Jr., Luanne Spence Taylor, Craig H. Spence, William R. Wingate, Ruth Wingate Downs, and Harry L. Wingate, Jr. (collectively "the Spences") sued the executors of the estate of Clara Davis Spence, including Clara Davis Hamm, Warren Allen Davis, and NationsBank of Georgia, alleging breach of an oral contract to make a will. The trial court granted the executors' motion for summary judgment, and the Spences' appeal, enumerating eight errors. The following allegations provide the complaint's sole evidentiary support. This case arose in 1968 after Harry L. Wingate, Jr., an attorney, made a deathbed visit to his uncle, Henry T. Spence, Clara Davis Spence's husband of almost 30 years. Wingate and his secretary, a notary, came to finalize a power of attorney he drew up at Henry Spence's request. After the power of attorney was executed, Wingate asked if there was anything more he could do. Henry Spence purportedly answered in the negative, explaining that he and his wife agreed to retain their existing mutual will devising everything to the survivor on the condition that Mrs. Spence would execute a new will after his death leaving half her estate to his nieces and nephews. Mrs. Spence then allegedly asked Wingate to draft such a will, but he declined due to his status as Mr. Spence's beneficiary. During this exchange, Mr. Spence asked Wingate to handle the probate proceedings and assist Mrs. Spence. After Mrs. Spence died 25 years later, Wingate learned that, with one minor exception, she had bequested the entirety of her estate to her brother and his two children.
