Police of the Horassan Province have reportedly been hunting for him for several months day and night. According to police, his victims were predominantly prostitutes. Meshhed, Iran’s second largest city, is located in the country’s north-east, not far from the border with Turkmenistan and Afghanistan. The area has never been noted for peace and quiet – refugees are always hoarding there, drugs are being trafficked intensely. The maniac’s first victim was discovered precisely a year ago, July 28th, 2000, while the latest murder was committed July 24the this year. All the 19 victims were prostitutes, and this fact led the police to think of religious motives of the crime. In Iran, there are various extremist groups which are too much keen to strengthen the social morals and eradicate prostitution and corruption. In 1998, Iran also saw a series of killings where Iranian intellectuals and dissidents were major targets. According to some Iranian MPs, those killings were committed by uncontrolled members of Iranian intelligence structures.

ICASE COLLOQUIUM "Spectrum Dichotomy and Stability Criteria" Sergei Godunov Sobolev Institute of Mathematics, Russia Friday, August 2, 2002, 10:30 a.m. Bldg. 1152, Conference Room 225 (ICASE) Well-known theorems state that a continuous map is stable if the eigenvalues are negative and that an iterative process converge if all the eigenvalues are less than one. In this talk, we present apparent paradoxical examples to these theorems and new ways to overcome the problems. In particular, we present the notion of spectrum dichotomy and its analogy to resonance curves applied in physics and engineering. We also present a system of matrix equations for dichotomy criteria (generalized Lyapunov equations) and a simple solution method. ICASE COLLOQUIUM "Spectrum Splitting for Matrix Operators in the Finite Element Method for Elliptic Problems" Sergei Godunov Sobolev Institute of Mathematics, Novosibirsk, Russia Tuesday , May 6, 1997 , 10:00 am (*Note time) NASA Pearl Young Theater (*NOTE LOCATION) Recently, in applied problems of linear algebra, some serious difficulties have surfaced due to the necessity of a new approach to the notion of spectrum. Up to sufficient accuracy, the spectrum is not discrete, but looks like a collection of spots of epsilon-spectrum (or pseudospectrum in Trefethen term). The lecture is devoted to the discussion of the difficulties and how to overcome them. It turns out that it is convenient to use the idea of Keldysh in operator theory and some results from the works by Lidskii and Keldysh in 50-60's.
