KIOWA COUNTY'S DECORATED VETERANS
Kiowa County grew out of the prairies and Kiowa, Comanche and Apache reservations. When war came to our country, her sons and daughters, answered the call. Some never returned to their homes on the prairie, others came home bearing the scars and wounds of war. Still others came home wearing medals given by a grateful country for their service above and beyond. May these men always be remembered in our prayers and our future, which they helped to make possible. Below is the list of our veterans, with the medals they earned. I'm sure some have been missed due to lack of access to their names and honors. If I have missed your relative, please email

Community Advisors
How do a stay-at-home mom, a Boeing engineer and an IT consultant help determine the health care services offered by Evergreen Healthcare? As members of Evergreen’s Community Advisor program, they provide input on health care issues to Evergreen and its publicly-elected Board of Commissioners.
The Community Advisors attend educational sessions throughout the year, where they learn about healthcare issues facing the community and about Evergreen programs and services to address those issues. The sessions also provide an avenue for the Community Advisors to give their views to the Board of Commissioners and to Evergreen administrators. Recent educational sessions have looked at Evergreen’s strategic plan and program development, cancer care, spiritual care and diagnostic imaging. As volunteers, the Community Advisors also serve on a variety of Evergreen task forces, and represent Evergreen at community events.
Evergreen is currently recruiting for new Community Advisors. Advisors must live in the
Evergreen Hospital District, which encompasses Bothell, Duvall, Kenmore, Kirkland, Redmond, Sammamish and Woodinville and portions of unincorporated northeast King County, Northshore School District, Riverview School District and Lake Washington

John W. Snyder Book Endowment Fund
John W. Snyder presenting one millionth volume to university librarian Joseph E. Jeffs. The John W. Snyder Book Endowment Fund was established in 1984 by the Library Board of Trustees, colleagues and friends to honor the upcoming 90th birthday of John W. Snyder. John Snyder chaired the Board of Trustees from its inception in 1975 until his death on October 8, 1985. His eulogy was delivered by the Rev. Timothy S. Healy, S.J. at the Washington National Cathedral on October 15, 1985:
My dear friends, There can not be many more times when we in Washington will gather to honor a friend who came to use out of the last century. John Wesley Snyder was born in Jonesboro, Arkansas, in 1895, and after Vanderbilt University served as a lieutenant in the Field Artillery during World War I. He thus belongs to a world which has left us few of his contemporaries, and to a war that your children and my students see as history, along with Waterloo and Actium. John Snyder entered public service in 1931 and from 1946 to 1953 was Secretary of the Treasury. He used to talk easily about his service during World War II, working for the armies that would no longer let him join, but his real pride came from what he helped do once the War was over: the reconversion of hundreds of plants to peacetime use; the stabilization of European currencies; the understandings that made commerce and business possible in the terrible winters of '46 and '47. He was proud, too, of his part in the Marshall Plan and the strong Treasury support it found, and proudest of all of the one program he himself designed and sold to the President, the GI Bill.

Additional information Abstract: A research-level community of mathematicians developed in the United States in the closing quarter of the nineteenth century. Since that time, American mathematicians have regularly paused to assess the state of their community and to reflect on its mathematical output. This paper analyzes a series of such reflectionsbeginning with Simon Newcomb's thoughts on the state of the exact sciences in America in 1874 and culminating with the 1988 commentaries on the ``problems of mathematics" discussed at Princeton's bicentennial celebrations in 1946against a backdrop of broader historical trends. Young Workers at Risk When Working in Agricultural Production Authors: David Hard, Ph.D., John Myers, M.S.F., Karl Snyder, Ph.D., Virgil Casini, B.S., Linda Morton, M.S., Rosemary Cianfrocco and Judy Fields.
National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Division of Safety Research, Morgantown, WV Keywords: youth; fatalities; agriculture; farming; occupational health and safety; work environment INTRODUCTION Methods Results Males comprised the vast majority of deaths in both surveillance systems, with females accounting for 3.4% (NTOF), and 1.8% (CFOI) of the total fatalities found among young agricultural production workers. Males had a fatality rate five (NTOF) to eleven (CFOI) times greater than females. Conclusions Recent research indicates that fatality rates for young workers based on hours worked may be significantly higher than rates based on employment, which could increase the relative risk found among workers in this age group [Ruser, 1998]. Although young agricultural workers show lower fatality rates than older agricultural workers, their 3-fold risk increase compared to the general working population indicates that protection of this worker population is an important public health concern. Prevention efforts should concentrate on the leading mechanisms resulting in death, such as farm tractors, trucks and drownings, to reduce these unacceptable risks. In Defence of Duddy Kravitz
Meredith Snyder "I think you're rotten," says Yvette at the end of The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz , "I wish you were dead" (Richler 318). This sentiment is echoed throughout a substantial amount of the criticism of Mordecai Richler's tale. At best, we question whether Duddy has learned anything during his apprenticeship; at worst, we accuse him of taking a tremendous step backwards, of becoming an utterly contemptible human being. When Duddy steals money from his friend and admirer, Virgil, to pay for the final parcel of land around Lac St. Pierre, it may seem that he has sunk to a low from which he may never recover; but careful consideration of the events leading up to the theft, the turn of events after it, and finally, Duddy's emotional reaction to both Yvette's anger and Simcha's disappointment indicates that Duddy is not the monster that he is frequently made out to be. Duddy Kravitz is raised in a poor part of Montreal; people without hope are common, and, often, it is necessary to stoop below one's standards, just to make a living. Max Kravitz, for example, who has a respectable job as a taxi driver, also works as a pimp, to make ends meet. Duddy Kravitz grows up idolizing Jerry Dingleman, the "Boy Wonder" who, according to Max's stories, is someone who has been able to fight his way out of the St. Urbain St. squalor, and become a success. The oral legends Max tells of his accomplishments, of his humble beginnings, and his slow rise to greatness recall heroic epics like
