Willebrord van Roijen Snell (1580-1626) Netherlands. "Although he discovered the law of refraction, a basis of modern geometric optics, in 1621, he did not publish it and only in 1703 did it become known when Huygens published Snell's result in Dioptrica ." Snell also studied navigation and proposed the method of triangulation, which is the foundation of geodesy (the branch of mathematics dealing with the measurement of features on the earth). "This form of Snell's law was actually published by (1596-1650) France in La Dioptrique (1637). Snell did discover the relationship but articulated it in a different way. Today it is the form used by Descartes that is called Snell's law." The index of refraction is often thought of as an "optical density".

  • The angle of incidence is named with the Greek letter theta, and, since it is in medium 1, is called theta

Have you ever looked at someone standing in the shallow end of a swimming pool and thought that they looked really short? As soon as they stepped out they looked taller. Something must be happening to the way that light is traveling to your eyes. Your brain and eyes always assume that the light is traveling to your eyes in a straight line… which is not always the case! This does not mean that light travels in curved lines, but the direction that a beam of light is traveling can be changed. What is really happening is refraction , the bending of waves as they pass from one medium to another. In the swimming pool example, the light traveling through the water from the person’s feet must be bending and moving in another direction when it enters the air … this makes their feet appear to be in a different spot making the person look shorter. Since Ptolemy’s time (about 100AD) people knew about refraction, but they didn’t know why it happened, or how to predict and calculate it. In the year 1600 a Dutch mathematician named Willebrord Snell was playing around with numbers and figured out a formula that fit what everyone was measuring.

Willebrord Snell
Willebrord Snell was an early seventeenth century Dutch mathematician who is best known for determining that transparent materials have different indices of refraction depending upon their composition. Snell was born to an affluent family in Leiden in 1580, and started studying mathematics as a very young man. His father was a scholar and professor of mathematics at the University of Leiden. Snell entered the University of Leiden at a relatively young age where he originally studied law. His attention soon turned to mathematics and he was teaching at the university by the time he was 20 years old. After finishing with his degree at the university, he traveled to eastern Europe and visited most of the major astronomers of the day. In 1613, Snell succeeded his father as professor of mathematics at Leiden and in 1617, he published Eratosthenes Batavus , which explained his methodology for measuring the Earth by triangulation. Snell had difficulty completing his work until the brother barons Sterrenberg took over and finished it with his assistance. This important work wove the foundations of modern geodesy. Snell also published other works, including his work on comets and in 1624, he published

        You may have learned that the speed of light is constant (about 30 000 000 metres per second). In actual fact it is only constant if it is travelling through a medium (material - eg. air) of constant density. When light encounters an increase in density, it slows down. When light encounters a decrease in density it speeds up. These changes in speed correspond to changes in direction so changes in density cause the path of light to bend. See below.
