Sneddon-Wilkinson disease Also known as: Duhring-Sneddon-Wilkinson syndrome Sneddon syndrome Synonyms: Dermatosis pustulosa subcornealis, la pustulose sous-cornée (French), subcorneal pustular dermatosis. Associated persons: Louis Adolphus Duhring Ian Bruce Sneddon Daryl Sheldon Wilkinson Description: Chronic recidivating pustulous dermatosis of unknown origin with eruptions usually involving the axillae, groins, abdomen, submammary areas, the flexor aspects of the limbs, and, less commonly, the palms and soles. The course is quite similar to that of dermatitis herpetiformis, but there is rarely itching. Predominantly in women (4: 1); onset after 40 years of age. Seldom in children. Bibliography:

Mathematics Department from 1957 to 1967
John Wesley Cell was selected to head the Department of Mathematics when Hilbert Fisher retired in 1957. John W. Cell (Photo from Archives, UA #23.5) John Cell attended Kansas City Junior College and earned his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Illinois. Before coming to N. C. State in 1935, Cell taught at the University of Illinois, Southern Methodist University and the University of Texas. Cell played a significant role in getting approval for the Masters program in Engineering Mathematics in 1947 and the Bachelor of Engineering Mathematics program in 1956. He was active in research and had an ongoing sponsored research program in rocket science. In 1943, Dr. Cell was honored as the first recipient of the Faculty Award by the NC State chapter of Tau Beta Pi. In 1967 he received an Outstanding Teacher Award. The increased number of students led to a reorganization of the administration of the department. Howard Nahikian was appointed as graduate administrator, Carey Mumford was put in charge of the undergraduate courses for engineers, Hubert Park was put in charge of the undergraduate courses for non-engineers and Bob Winton took on the task of supervising the Engineering Mathematics undergraduate program. Professor Maltbie, recognized by all as an excellent teacher, was put in charge of supervising the teaching assistants. In the fall of 1957 a superior student program was inaugurated for engineering students with marked ability in mathematics. Students in this two year program were taught in special sections which went more deeply into the subject matter than was possible in the regular sections. In Cell's words "Those schools and colleges with sufficient vision to rescue the able students from boredom and stagnation and to provide a realistic and challenging program for them must be followed by all the rest."

PROFESSOR IAN SNEDDON - KEELE'S FIRST MATHS PROFESSOR
Professor Ian Sneddon, Keele's first maths professor and - in the words of the Times - one of Scotland's most eminent mathematicians, has died at the age of 80. During the war he was a scientific officer with the Ministry of Supply, where he was concerned with the mathematical theory of elasticity relating to armaments. After that he spent a year at Bristol working on nuclear physics, and then four years at Glasgow, at his old university, as a lecturer in natural philosophy, before being recruited by Lord Lindsay to the University College of North Staffordshire at the early age of thirty as one of the youngest of the founder-professors. At Keele he was much loved and respected by the early students, one of whom describes him as "quite a colourful character as well as a most able mathematician". He was Senior Tutor from 1954 to 1956. After six years he left Staffordshire to return to Glasgow as Simson Professor of Mathematics, but he never lost his lively affection for and interest in Keele. After he left Keele Ian spent the rest of his career at Glasgow; at one time he declined the vice-chancellorship of an English university, preferring to remain in Glasgow and devote himself to mathematics. In the course of his career he was the author of various books on mathematics, and of scientific papers on the quantum theory of nuclei, the theory of elasticity and boundary value problems.

Dr Ian Bruce Sneddon CBE MD FRCP. 1915-1987
Ian Sneddon He was one of our great British Dermatologists. He was clinical Dean of the University of Sheffield for 18 years - a great honour for a dermatologist. He was President of the British Association of Dermatologists in 1970. He was awarded an honorary degree of MD by his university and later was given the distinction of a Commander of the British Empire (CBE). He was also an honorary fellow of the Danish and South African dermatology Societies and he gave guest lectures all over the world. Two boating stories from Dr Stephen Gold In Scotland for one holiday Dr Sneddon and Joan had towed their cruiser on a trailer behind their Rover. On the way home, as he was winding the winch to haul the boat out of the water on to the trailer he was seized with gripping chest pain - they both realised its significance. However Joan had never driven the car towing the boat. So they decided to press on, drive to Sheffield and have his coronary seen to back home! All was well and there were no bad repercussions. He continued his private practice until literally the end when he died suddenly after consulting. The Sneddon-Bowers trophy of the British Association of Dermatologists for the winner of the annual sailing competition was endowed in his honour.

About BAD BAD Constitution What is a Dermatologist Access to Care ... Frequently Asked Questions The medical vista for the country as a whole was unclear; the National Health Service was in play and hinted at a new millenium. Post-war trainees, many having been specialists in the services, would soon be ready for consultant posts, and these seemed likely to increase in number; a few that had fallen vacant during the war had thoughtfully been left unfilled. Many areas had been devastated by airraids, hospitals were outdated, even derelict; ward space and serviceable buildings were in short supply, as was equipment. Dermatology had a low priority. Huge clinics were staffed by few doctors, most of whom had received no formal training, relying on reading books and personal experience gleaned over years of practice. The figure of one consultant post for 200,000 persons, as depressing then as it seems to remain, was regarded appropriate; a number of provincial regions have taken time to meet even that target. Separation from venereology, as in the services, was officially supported though some seniors naturally persisted in their dual roles. Alluring private practice could deflect interest from the hospital scene and the ethos of a National Health Service had, among some seniors, yet to be accepted. In Scotland, Edinburgh, as ever, was a law unto itself, and in many ways academically advanced. It is true that when Percival first arrived there were no histological slides to be found anywhere in the department in spite of Norman Walker's earlier interest in pathology, but he promptly set about recording and storing material so that in time a fine collection of slides, classified by disease, was created
